Academic Statement of Purpose
Our department’s Health Services Organization and Policy (H.S.O.P.) Ph.D. Program looms large in my mind because I want a career in the research of operations research and decision science. Throughout my work and studies, I realized that we no longer live in a world where we can ignore the costs of treatment. I believe health economic evaluation and comparative effectiveness research can be the key to solving these problems. Obtaining my Ph.D. degree would a transformative step towards my career goal.
Academic Background
I have had a strong inclination towards science from my school days, I was admitted in a seven-year French-Chinese bilingual medical education program at a top medical school in China.
In my junior years, through a series of research and clinical experience, I have become interested in the area of endocrine complications in long-term survivors after allogeneic stem cell transplantation. My thesis, titled “Effects of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation on Thyroid Function”, was completed at Ruijin Hospital. In the final year of my M.D. program, I was granted an opportunity to work as a resident in the Europe’s second largest bone marrow transplant unit at Saint-Louis Hospital, Paris. I participated in a study that evaluated the NIH classification of acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease in reduced intensity conditioning transplantation. As me being the first author, the research was presented at the poster session of
Many selections of healthcare plans are available for consumers to choose from to match their own personal needs, preferences and budget. The health care system is most often complex, inconsistent and costly. To maintain and improve the business, healthcare organizations are continuously innovative and evolving to meet the demands of consumers. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a case study of UnitedHealthcare Group, what they are about, their network and resource management, their view on nursing and how they satisfy their patients.
I decided to pursue medicine while I was attending high school in Kolkata, India and fell in love with biology. I enjoyed engaging with people and developing meaningful relationships. I was looking for a path that would provide me with the skills to help others, both in my home country India and abroad. I felt that medicine can offer me an enriched career with the perfect balance of scientific challenge, intellectual stimulation and personal collection. Surrounded by the Himalayas in West Bengal, India, medical school further inspired my intellectual curiosity and cemented my professional identity.
My academic career is based on the sciences, especially chemistry and biology. Throughout my childhood, I have been greatly exposed to the sciences. My mother was a nurse practitioner in a rural clinic, which was connected to our house. Consequently, the clinic became my playground and the stethoscopes became my toys. Therefore, I was always interested in how the body worked and what affected our health.
Health care economics involves making plenty of choices. Individuals, groups, businesses, and organizations choose how to use resources . Economics and health care are linked, because health care professionals apply economics in their everyday professional activities. They are able to do this through resource allocation. Any health care organization has to plan out how they will use their resources to their advantage. Health care economics are able to incorporate terms like cost, quality, and resources. In this paper, I will compare these terms as they relate to health care economics. In this paper, I will also explain how they
The United States of Health and Human Services (HHS) is the principal agency that protects the health of Americans and provides them with crucial human services, particularly those who are unable to help themselves. The Health and Human Services provides essential services to those who are least able to afford the cost of health. The motto of the organization is “Improving the health, safety, and well being of America” (Health and Human Services, n.d). Initially, the department also constituted education but in 1979, the Department of Education was formed and education was no longer a mandate of the Health and Human Services.
Feedback: Prolonged survival has been reported following the successful transplantation of the thymus gland or spontaneous remission of immunodeficiency. A heart, liver, or lung transplant will not resolve the hypocalcemia.
The U.S. Health Services System (HSS) is a market based system in which individuals are required to purchase healthcare individually or through an employer. At this time the U.S. HSS is not available to everyone despite the industrialization that the nation has rather it is available to those who can afford it. The U.S. HSS is a broad mixture of services such as hospitals, nursing homes, long term care, emergency care, vaccinations and a myriad of other health related services. I believe in Medical City’s mission to deliver high quality care. I see things differently now. Knowing that I really did not want to pursue my career as an Actuary, my thoughts wandered to the area of public health, specifically healthcare management. When I first read this excerpt by E.E. Cummings, I realized that I have been fighting the same battle throughout my undergraduate life at Penn State. I have finally come to understand that I must pursue my own path. I need a career that will help a large number of people and will continuously challenge and motivate me to improve. It all started when I recently enrolled in a class offered through Penn State called the Economics of Public Expenditures. As I listened to my professor, Daolu Cai talked about contemporary health issues in United States, I was intrigued. This one semester class provided me with a basic but detailed understanding of the issues faced in the healthcare industry. The field of healthcare is very aspirational. I perceive it as not just about helping individuals, but it’s about changing humanity and after careful deliberation, I’m confident that working in the global healthcare sector is, without a doubt, the right career for me. I want to pursue MSc in International Healthcare Management because I care about people and I want to help them live better lives. My goal is to positively influence people’s lives as a member of a healthcare management team as I climb up the career ladder. I want to research and implement intervention policies aimed at providing humanity with

National health agencies of US government are working for protection of health and prevention of disease. NHA provide services which are necessary for humans. These agencies are most helpful for those who cannot help themselves. These agencies provide framework for PH systems and governing bodies. After implementing this framework areas can be identified which needs improvement, improve local and state partnership. NHA organize participation for performance improvement, prioritize areas for action, explore root causes of performance, develop and implement improvement plans, regularly monitor and report progress.
Cost-benefit, cost-effectiveness and cost-utility analyses are forms of economic evaluation which are useful in health economics for comparing costs and allocating resources. Health economics is widely relevant to governments and the health sector in implementation of new policy, as it concerns the allocation of resources in the context of a limited budget, or 'scarcity'. Economic evaluation is a potential tool for setting priorities in health, though it is only one of many potential criteria, including overall budget and public attitudes and wants. Economic evaluation is already in use in some settings, such as in pharmaceutical company proposals for government subsidisation, but there is room for expansion across the field of

Management as it relates to the health services realm requires a deep understanding of coordinating the delivery of healthcare. One must be able to utilize frameworks to recognize and develop solutions to challenges within managing healthcare. My desire to become a health services manager (HSM) spawns directly from this concept of identifying an issue and being able to present interventions and approaches to improve the overall quality of life for communities.
