America no longer provides access to the American Dream to everyone. The American Dream means freedom and equal rights for all citizens, an equal opportunity for all to achieve goals, and the belief that everything is attainable in life if one just works hard enough. Many people go through so much trouble to accomplish this dream but, with the law getting stricter to immigrants they cannot live their American Dream.
The American dream is an amazing opportunity for people. It was in the past and it is now. It gives immigrants the chance to make a life for themselves and their families. It allows them to escape poverty and the hardships that they face in their country. Coming to America gives people a chance to get a job, own their own business, or get their own home. Past generations have thrived greatly from this opportunity. Current and future generations are struggling.
The American dream has changed drastically thru our history. Back in the 1950 and 1960 the American dream was to have the house with the white picket fence and the 2 ½ kids. Now the dream for a lot of people is to be able to pay their bills and maybe have enough money to go out for a nice little dinner that you did not have to cook yourself. The American dream is inaccessible to the majority of people in America.
In her 1961 essay “What Has Happened to the American Dream?”, Eleanor Roosevelt stated that “no single individual and no single group has an exclusive claim to the American dream...but we have all a vision of what it is, not merely as a hope and an aspiration, but as a way of life, which we can come ever closer to attaining its ideal form if we keep our belief in its essential value”. The belief of pursuing the American dream is one that has been instilled since the formation of the country itself, and with those beliefs come those who pursue it. Unfortunately, achieving this dream is not without difficulty, and those who realize the true obstacles in front of them turn to other ways to sustain themselves in this nation. Not everyone has an equal opportunity to pursue the American dream because of social exclusion, the government prioritizing the wrong issues, and economic gaps, which has thus led to organized crime, however some say that all citizens do have the equal opportunity.
The American dream, an idea that is inextricably linked with liberal democratic principles, is based on the notion that on American soil, every person has equal access to opportunity and fair treatment under the law. The American Dream originated in the early days of the American settlement, with mostly poor immigrants searching for opportunities. It was first manifested in the Declaration of Independence, which describes an attitude of hope. The Declaration of Independence states:

Everyone’s American Dreams are all different, but a majority of them all have a few things in common, that is becoming financially fit, acquiring a good education, and pursuing the opportunities that were not available. Brandon King expresses that the ideals and values of the American Dream are very much alive. However, Paul Krugman author of “Confronting Inequalities” bring up several excellent points as well, regarding that not all Americans can pursue the American Dream because of all the inequalities Americans currently possesses. Achieving the American Dream is not impossible, but it is harder to attain now than how it used to be with social, income, and racial inequalities being the primary cause. As of now individuals has to overcome many of bias barriers to reach the American Dream which used to be a lot easier to gain back in the 1940s-50s.

What provides for the American dream in modern day society is the rights given to you when you become an American, and the rights to get a job and earn money. The American Dream is accessible because those who can achieve it, and those who try to, can reach it. but because the focus has shifted to realistic terms, it may or may not be accessible to all. It is still accessible because if you try hard enough, you will be able to achieve the American dream of freedom, a home, a job for money, and anything else you wish to be able to do when being an American. Anything can be achieved if you try hard enough and you want it bad enough to work for it. If you don’t try to work, or try to succeed, then you don’t want to achieve the American dream.
The United States of America represented the land of promise for millions of people around the world, and for many years. For some, the American dream is still existent and continues to lure in millions of immigrants each year. For others however, the American dream is setting, and this might be revealed at several levels, such as the decreasing access to health care, the decreasing quality of the educational act, the decreasing access to jobs or the lower ability for the average citizen to live a life without worry or economic care.
