Ways that people apologize People make mistakes all the time; therefore, they use apologizes to show the respect, politeness, and regret in order to appeal to the other person. Apologizing is a key technique for people to communicate. Apologies are usually used when a person makes a mistake and wants to correct it, but sometimes the ways people use them can change the purpose of the apologizes. People often apologize for these purposes: for interrupting, for something someone did not mean to do, to show sympathy, to make an excuse, and to correct their mistake, for example. When a person wants to interrupt someone, he/she might apologize, even when the speaker does not have any fault or mistake. The purpose of this apology strategy, according to Tory Paez in her article, “Five Things to Say Instead of ‘Sorry’” is to “keep the peace and reset the conversation after a confrontational, argumentative, or uncomfortable moment.” For example, when a person wants to say something that is controversial, he/she could apologize …show more content…

The purpose of this type of apologize does not mean to say sorry, but to show a sympathy expression for a person who faces something misfortune in life. In the article Legal Consequences of Apologizing, Peter Rehm and Denise Beatty point out the goal of sympathy apologize is to help other people feel better: “Injured persons need to receive an apology or other expression of sympathy as part of the healing process” (116). A loving and caring person would use this type of apologize to share the pain with the broken person. A good situation to use sympathy apology is when a person who lost their loving one, or been through some sort of physical and mentally ill, would need a sympathy apology to encourage and help that person to heal the pain.
