Scars are part of the skin’s natural healing process, and occur when the thick layer of tissue that is below the surface of the skin called the dermis is damaged. Wounds on the surface or epidermis often do not leave scars. The dermis is where you will find blood capillaries, sweat glands, nerve endings and hair follicles. It is in the hair follicles where acne forms.

When you get an acne lesion such as a pustule, papule or cyst, you have a chance of getting a scar. The hair follicle or pore has excess oil, which holds dead skin cells that attract bacteria and become inflamed. When the pore swells, it causes a break in the follicle wall. Sometimes a minor lesion is near the surface of the skin and heals quickly. This type of scarring occurs when tissue in the inflamed area is lost.

You may be able to determine if your acne will cause scarring by the amount of inflammation you have. The more inflammation, the more likely a scar will form. Another factor in scarring are deep breakouts that do not heal quickly. The types of acne that do not usually lead to scarring are blackheads, whiteheads and non-inflamed blemishes because they do not damage skin tissue.
