The classic play, Romeo and Juliet written by the world renowned author, William Shakespeare has and always will be a favorite among countless people around the world. The tall tale describes the ghastly beauty of the adolescent so early in its development, extending Shakespeare’s study of the humiliations and glories of teens. This first-rate piece of literature is educated in a passel of high school classrooms , but the thought of not educating students the works of Shakespeare is anathema to many teachers. However, not all of them think about it that way. The main question is, should this tragic curtain-raiser be taught to adolescents in high school, specifically ninth graders? After much deliberation, the classic play should not be taught to high schoolers for the following reasons; the writing is difficult to comprehend, the storyline is puerile and it teaches negative morals. This essay will explain the reasons why adolescents in high school should not be taught Romeo and Juliet. Predominantly, being the fact that this piece of literature was composed in the 1500s, also known as Old English, it is very baffling and difficult to understand. The playwright strays from the impractical and chimerical themes that most stories present. Instead of educating one’s disciples of coming-of-age or believing in the better good of others; a few examples of themes that are coeval, Romeo and Juliet illustrates an adolescents immaturity and defiant spirit as they develop. The two characters rebel against their parents, which in this case leads to the death of Tybalt, Mercutio, the sudden marriage of Romeo and Juliet and the bereavement of the two.
