When we think about an advantaged to fast food one of the main reasons that comes to mind is convenience. According to a study done by The National Center for Disease and Health Control, it is convenience that has caused a spike in fast food consumption (Hoffman, 2012). Ohio, for example, has one of the most fast food locations per resident in any state. Ohio has more McDonald’s restaurants, 7.1 per 100,000 residents, than any other state and almost twice as many Burger King’s 3.7 locations per 100,000 residents. There are far fewer McDonald’s outlets than Subways, which has 10.9 shops per 100,000 residents, more than any other state (McIntyre, 2015). Another advantage to fast food is the variety that is gives you. Your choices can range to Mediterranean, Hispanic, American, Asian, the list can go on and on. For those individuals who are not fluent in the art of cooking fast food can be the best option. Consumers who enjoy ethnic food have increased and ethnic food has become mainstream (Po, 2007). In 2011 the ethnic food market grew $3 billion in sales (Mintel, 2012). The option of having a variety of foods available to us, especially in major metropolitan areas, helps diversify us as individuals. We can learn a lot about a culture through food and the more we indulge in foods across different cultures the more we can expand our minds about those cultures in a positive way.

In addition to the advantages that fast food displays there are also disadvantages that we must take into account. One disadvantage that may not be widely recognized it the affect the fast food industry has on its workers. This line of work has been linked to higher levels of injury, hazard exposure, diseases and physiological distress (Bohle, 2004). Injuries often go unrecorded and uncompensated (Schlosser, 2012). Not to mention fast food workers are often degraded by customers. They pay minimum wage which in many states is not enough to make a decent living.
