Reptiles are first group of vertebrates which became fully adapted for terrestrial mode of life. Reptiles consist mainly of snakes, tortoises, crocodiles. They are not considered economically useful as many of them like snakes and crocodiles are harmful. Still they have some economic importance such as – As food –*Reptiles are important source of protein for human populations. *The …show more content…
*The tail muscles of Uromastyx is eaten by some tribals. *Alligator meat is eaten by many population of the world. B) Trade – *The skin of reptiles has a significant role in our economy. *The skin of reptiles are used to make articles like hand bags, belts and shoes. *The skins of both alligators and crocodiles are used to produce many forms of leather goods, including shoes, pocketbooks, belts and boots. *Snake skins are also used in great frequency to create similar products, such as belts and handbags. …show more content…
E) As medicine –*Snake venom is widely used in the development of pain-management drugs. *A medicine prepared from the Brazilian pit viper is used in the treatment of high blood pressure. *Two drugs namely eptifibatide and tirofiban, prepared from the snake venom are used to treat minor heart attacks and chest pain. *The venom of southern copperhead contains a protein called contortrostatin that has ability to suppress cancer growth by binding to tumors disallowing them from spreading. *A drug called is exenatide is synthesized from the saliva of Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum) which helps to sustain glucose levels and increase weight loss, a common factor in controlling type 2
which venomous snake is best known? Yep, you guessed it, the King Cobra (or as scientists call it Ophiophagus Hannah or snake-eater!!). Did you know that King Cobra are the only snake to lay eggs that they guard with all their life . They can also raise ⅓ of there body off the ground. They raise their body of the ground to make themselves look bigger to scare off enemies. The also hold a world record for longest tongue and they are not the most venomous snake in the world? They just eject the most venom into their prey.
A 68 million-year-old DNA sample retrieved from soft tissue cells found in a recently excavated pregnant Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil has led researchers at North Carolina State University to produce the first fully living dinosaur embryo in millions of years.
Reptiles are crucial in the food chain. Not only are their predators but are also prays to others making them very important to the ecosystems. They control pest and acts as pollinators.
The long-tailed weasel gets 8.4 units of energy a day from snakes in total but only get 0.1 of those units come from all four the striped snakes combined. The weasel gets 3.2 units from Garter snakes and 5.1 units from the Patch-nosed snakes. This is the same pattern that was seen in raptors. Both of the predators prefer the Garter snakes and Patch-nosed snakes to the striped snakes, further supporting the theory that the stripes on the Milk snake, Kingsnake, Shovel-nosed snake, and Coral snake make them less attractive to predators and therefore the predators eat much less of them then the Garter and Patch-nosed
There are four main groups of reptiles, known as Crocodilians, Squamates, Tuataras, and Turtles. Crocodilians consists of large reptiles which includes alligators, crocodiles, gharials, and caimans. Squamates are lizards, snakes, and worm-lizards. A worm-lizard is a subterranean burrowing reptile that resembles an earthworm, a legless lizard. Tuataras are a group of reptiles that are lizard-like in appearance but are different from squamates because their skull isn’t jointed. Turtles are the most ancient reptiles alive today. They have changed very little since they first showed up 220 million years ago. The first turtle appeared 220 million years ago.(Laura Klappenbach)
Biodiversity is something the snakes are also messing with. The definition is " Having many different kinds of plants and animals means that species have different choices for survival" as say in the article Are the Everglades Forever?. So by snakes eating most of the animals , its not giving an opportunity to the other animals
Antivenom is an antidote for venom that counters a specific venom or venom type. It is made to treat the venom of snakes, arachnids, scorpions, and poisonous amphibians. Also called antivenin, it is effective on the majority of recipients, but only if it is administered within a small window of opportunity before the venom does too much damage to or outright kills the victim. Antivenom’s manufacturing is similar to a vaccination. A vertebrate,
Dr. James Hanken, Director and Curator in Herpetology at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard shed light on the classification of different species. He removed specimens from jars and explained their differences and similarities. He removed and displayed a lizard reptile, that stated originated from Africa ant is also called a chameleons, a king snake from North America a reptile and an amphibian, a boa constrictor snake and a lizard that resembles a snake. He pointed out that the boa constrictor is more mobile because this snake has the
For my report I will write about Pogona, otherwise referred to as the bearded dragon. These harmless reptiles are mostly found in Australia in ridged rocky regions. They enjoy climbing and can be found up on high rocks or on branches of trees. They are also typically found in dessert regions of Australia chilling on tree stumps and rocks. For pet dragon you will want a habitat that has a heat source on one side to keep it warm if needed and a small place to hide and climb on. They will also obviously need a shallow dish for food and water purposes.

Several animals have these frogs as a part of their diet. Some of these organisms are fish (bass), hawks, snakes, and many others.
The fossil of Tiktaalik confirmed a major prediction of paleontology in that it showed characteristics of both aquatic animals, such as fish, and land animals, such as reptiles and amphibians. While it had fins and scales, it also had a flexible neck, a flat head, and complex bone structure in its fins that correspond with the structure of the legs of terrestrial animals. Thus, it demonstrates the evolutionary transition between aquatic and terrestrial life.
This “cocktail” has coevolved to target the snake’s prey of choice (Margres etc., 165). Over time, natural selection typically causes these venoms to become slightly different among species in different populations. This occurs because a prey animal with a gene that resists a snake’s venom would be favored by natural selection, which would prompt an evolutionary response from the snake to make alterations to its venom to combat this resistance (Aiyar, Raeka). This results in distinct predator-prey co-adaptations, which leads to great diversity among regions and the concentration of venom proteins (Margres etc., 167). This is evident in populations of the Eastern diamondback. “For example, two venom components, including one known to cause paralysis in prey, are found at high levels in the Northernmost populations, and were completely absent in the snakes from Caladesi Island, near Tampa” (Aiyar, Raeka). However, an exception to this pattern has been
In this article the author talks about the kinds of reptiles, birds, mammals and amphibians at that time before Pompeii had that disaster, and how these kinds of animals were important at that period and represented on many things especially mammals and birds, herpetologist will try to show us what they have found at that city.
Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton demonstrated many dinosaur characteristics and behaviors. The dinosaurs were fictionally characterized to appeal to the readers. By examining the dinosaur’s appearance and behaviors of dinosaurs such as the duckbilled dinosaur, velociraptor, hypsilophodontids, dilophosaurs, Triceratops, apatosaurs, Tyrannosaurus rex, stegosaurs, and maiasaurs distinguished whether the evidence existed in the field of paleontology. The behaviors and characteristics of the dinosaur are divided into three factors as behaviors that were supported, not supported, and no evidence to support or refute the behavior.
