Studying abroad-----an inevitable phenomenon currently
Have you ever thought of continuing your study in foreign countries? There is a growing consensus that mountains of parents in our community are sending their kids abroad to complete their schooling. This phenomenon deserves the full attention of all walks of life in Hong Kong. Read this article to find more about the reasons behind their move, as well as the impacts on local schools and children going abroad.
The alarming increasing trend of children studying abroad can be attributed to the better educational system in European countries than in our society. Needless to say, our educational system is too exam-oriented. Students usually sit for the TSA in primary schools, as well as HKDSE in Form 6. If students in our community are incapable of passing the examinations with flying colours, they will feel psychologically disappointed. Recent surveys reveal that 45% of parents are not contented with the local education system, which results in stressful and hectic lifestyle

If more and more children study abroad, the legitimacy and credibility of local universities will be much lower. It is of paramount importance that the ranking of universities in our community should be as high as possible, for the sake of increasing competitiveness. However, the true picture is that children are sent abroad on account of the dissatisfaction of the educational system in Hong Kong. According to Times Higher Education World University Rankings, tertiary schools in foreign countries which include London University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology are better than those in our city like the University of Hong Kong. Students in Hong Kong are also reluctant to study the Lingnan University and the Open University which are from Hong Kong. How can anyone turn a blind eye to this must-solve
With an increase in student mobility around the world, there are many positive outcomes related to learning a different set of education from their home country and obtaining intercultural experiences with a global mindset. On the other hand, students may struggle with different challenges, which they may have unexpected to encounter.
They have to face new experience and new challenges in their life when they come to abroad. The first year of their college abroad is a litmus test for them, if they have a positive experience they will stay but if they have negative experience they have to leave. I had observed the issues faced by the international students over here as they make their entry to new culture and a new educational system. They have to begin a new life in an environment that is very different. For example simple tasks such as going to grocery store where the language is different and the products are unfamiliar. The education system in India and Canada is different as in India, more focus is on memorization and there is no practical work but over here, more focus is on problem-solving skills and self-guided research. Majority of the students live without their family which is very hard for them to live without parents in abroad. Their parents sent them over here with a hope of their family
Being able to travel has become much easier for many over the past few years especially as the world has become smaller and more accessible with improving political relations between countries. Transport options are also at times much cheaper and quicker than they would have previously been.
First, it can be hard and difficult. Some student cannot stand to live without their parents and family members. They might feel abandoned, lonely and depressed. This will have a bad outcome on them like getting into grave psychological issues. Second, surely most parents who got only one child will definitely find it very hard to send him abroad, even if it's for his own benefits. Third, many people think that studying abroad will make them fluent in the language spoken in this country, which is not the case. Certainly, they will be learning a new language with less effort, but they also need to study for it. Students that are unable to learn the native language quickly will have some difficulty in communication with their instructors and colleges(Arora,2014). Many students who didn't succeed in their superior studies was for this reason. Forth, traveling to a new country alone might expose them to danger. Lots of people were traveling abroad in order to study, but then they found other illegal activities that allow them to earn more money with less time and
The world of a student is a very complicated place with either two options: a relaxed childhood filled with quality learning and experimenting, or one that is so demanding and exhausting that students cannot handle it anymore. Presently, the deciding factor for which path students will travel is the conditions and environment provided to students by the previous generation. For example, Finland is one of the most successful countries in creating proper educational settings for students to excel when it comes to world competition. The policies created by Finland’s government and its authorities are more than suitable to extract the most potential out of students without the negative side effects. Finnish students receive the
Studying abroad, which has become a common phenomenon, can be a fun and meaningful experience. Many university students are interested in studying abroad because it gives them an opportunity to explore different cultures and broaden their horizons. As Mark Sherry, Peter Thomas and Wing Hong Chui argue in “International Students: a Vulnerable Student Population,” the goals that students pursue international study are often to acquire different ways of learning and to improve cross-cultural understanding, which helps them gain self-confidence as well as maturity (33). This experience turns out to be beneficial to those who study abroad. Nevertheless, when students are surrounded by a wholly new environment, many problems that hinder their
Apart from educational excellence, there are number of other factors, which contribute in this country’s popularity among international students mainly Asian students.
Education is a never-ending learning process that has always been a piece of our life. As education is a building block in our lives, we are eager to put profoundly into our education. Good education will lead us to the bright future. With the fast advancement of public opinion, we have entered an era of information explosion which the necessity of studying abroad has turned into a developing pattern among youth. Most of the students feel that studying abroad is better than studying in local universities. As the saying goes, “the grass always looks greener on the other side of fence.” In this way, I believe that considering abroad have extraordinary points of benefits.
Studying abroad is said to be “an experience of a lifetime” because of the wide array of opportunity and accomplishment students can attain while pursuing their academic goals. Whether a student hopes to learn about cultural uniqueness or gain insight about potential career opportunities, studying abroad is a great way to explore these interests while focusing on academics. Personally, the idea of being able to immerse myself into an entirely new culture while studying topics that I enjoy the most sounds especially exciting. I have always loved exploring the differences amongst the world’s many cultures. In fact, in early high school I took a course titled Diverse Perspectives where I learned about the traditions and beliefs of many different
For a Chinese student first came to study in America, the most common question asked by my classmates and teachers is “why would you come to U.S.?” or “what motivates you to study in a foreign country?” My answer was brief, “because American Education is the best in the world.” I know that my response is somewhat naive and lack of evidence. But now, after diligently struggling for three years in high school, I have a more persuasive explanation to certify that my decision of studying aboard was brilliant.
“In 2006 to 2007, according to the data compiled by the Institute of International Education, 582,984 students from all over the world were enrolled in American colleges and universities in a wide range of fields” (Carter, Paragraph 2, 2008). The United States has the highest number of students who are coming to study abroad than any other countries. Each year, the number of international students coming to the United States to obtain degrees is increasing by thousands, and home countries of these students are primarily India, China and Korea, all located in the whole different continent. But what are the motives of students who are crossing the sea to study? Their goal of studying abroad is to experience diversity and to adapt attitudes
The goal of this study is to see how study abroad influences a student 's life from personal growth to academia. Personal experience, interviews and questionnaires show the broad benefits that SA trips give benefits which include personal growth, higher academic achievement, personal cultural awareness. Previous articles on this subject have come to similar conclusions and hinted at what more research would conclude. My research reiterated and reinforced the past research but also allowed me to draw newer conclusions. The newer conclusion reached through interviews with study abroad participants is that those who study abroad are more likely to have more international cultural interest.
“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” (Walt Disney) . Trying out new things is what makes people smarter and more successful ; wisdom is gained when knowledge is tested through doing and experiencing new things. Moreover, education is the main source of knowledge, and people think of it as the most crucial aspect in life which will dictate whether a person will be successful or will fail . Education starts at home, but in school children learn various things, and choosing what school to get into is a tough choice to decide for both parent and child. One choice that parents often think about is to send their children abroad, one of which is
Vietnam is a developing country and its education is developing as well but there are still many limitations such as corruption, outdated curriculum and so on. However, I still chose to believe in the education in Vietnam, therefore when I finished high school, I entered the marine university at finance accounting department. During my time at that university, I realized my belief was wrong because most students in Vietnam after graduation were unemployed because of lack of skills. In particular, according to Dantri (2016) is the prestigious education electronic media website in Vietnam, in the first quarter of 2016, the country has 225,000 people with bachelor's degree and master degree are unemployment. Subsequently, I decided to study abroad and the question is which country can I choose to study abroad. I have done some research to find a good educated and suitable country for me, finally I chose the United Kingdom. The first reason is the UK has ranking in second place for higher education (Teleghraph, 2016). Secondly, UK is one of the most convenient environment to study English and the cost to study in UK is reasonable. The last reason is environment in UK is safer than some countries, namely the UK ranks 13th among the 23 safest countries to live in the world (Payne, 2016).
Hong Kong and Singapore also have been the next education destinations for international students thanks to the effort of government on education reformation (Economist, 2006). The “mega-markets” of China and India are also moving quickly to build their own domestic education systems to encourage more of their citizens to study at home (Boehm, Davis, Meares & Pearce, 2002).
