Living In A Small Town Has Unique Challenges
From an outsider’s perspective, living in a small town such as Agassiz seems like a pleasant and relaxing place to live; you get to know everyone, everything you need is within walking distance from your house, and it’s relatively safer than the city. However, as someone who has lived in the town of Agassiz her whole life, I have learned from firsthand experiences that small towns aren’t as peaceful as they seem. For example, the town has become too close-knit. This is due to the low population of students within the schools, mixed with the fact that a majority families have been here for several generations. As a result, cliques develop; causing drama and spreading gossip. Consequently, there just isn’t any privacy in Agassiz. Moreover, the few businesses that Agassiz has are basically all the same; overpriced convenience stores that never have what you need, and an alarming number of pizza places for such a restricted space. An easy solution for the issues that Agassiz suffers from is something that is already being implemented; expand the population by adding more housing and unique businesses.
There are three schools in Agassiz; two elementary schools and a high school. As someone who attended these schools, I noticed quickly that if your parents weren’t close to the other parents and the principal, it was hard to make friends or have your opinions catered to. This was most prominent in the high school, where great deals of the students’ families are close to the principal. As a result of this, they are often given a special treatment, meaning they get away with being bullies. I experienced several times where a group of these kids bullied people until they switched to another school, because the principal refused to help them out in any way. More personally, the principal wouldn’t let me switch out of a class to another class that I needed to take to get into my preferred university program, which has made the transition into university even more stressful. Additionally, the school has an extremely low population— only 300 kids the year that I graduated— that you get to know everybody, which isn’t ideal; I often heard way too much about other people’s personal
Many explorers came to South Carolina, but many failed to build a safe settlement for citizens to live on. The English were the big dogs in town, and were the first people to build a successful colony in South Carolina named Charles Town. The Spanish were the first people to explore South Carolina and they wanted to build their own settlement, but failed many times due to lack of knowledge of the land. So, the English took over and then they built the first settlement in South Carolina. Settling is the act of building a new way of life for yourself or others. Why was it so difficult to settle Charles Town? The difficulties of settling in Charles Town were geography, different resources, diseases, and Native Americans.
Schools are the most well-known settings for bullying. This is the place where students learn and socialize for most of the day. A school is a place meant to feel safe, not afraid. However, studies have shown us this is not the case. More and more students are reluctant to come to school. Why? Their peers may criticize them and abuse of them both verbally and physically. Bullying is more serious than most think. Many people just think it’s a simple hoax that was taken too far but this simple joke can lead to indelible emotional and physical scar that could hunt students for life eventually lowering their self-esteems and even ruining their lives. Schools and teachers have failed tremendously at stopping this.
Imagine growing up in a small town where everyone knows everyone's business and the nearest Wal-Mart is almost an hour away; then imagine attending a school where the amount of student attending is the same number of people who occupy a small town. The size difference is substantial and plays an important role. When I was younger, I had attended both a small town school and a school in the city. I have had the chance to experience the different lifestyles of these two variations of living. The development of who I am today was because of my surroundings. In the city, I noticed there was different opportunities. The opportunities seemed more readily available depending on funding and sources; which are dependant on the location. Education, development, and opportunities are widely known to be affected by environmental factors; thus, people who live in the city have a different experience than those who reside in small towns.
Since the establishment of public education in the United States, schools have provided a sense of security and belonging to their students. Although sitting through lectures and doing homework may not be the most exciting thing in the world, students will always have a lunch to eat, a roof over their head, and a supportive teacher or counselor that they can talk to. Despite the “safe” environment and presence of authoritative figures on school campuses, trouble always finds a way to break out. This social issue has been in the spotlight for quite some time now and is the leading cause for students to miss school, become less social, cause self harm and even in some cases death. Bullying and harassment are commonly seen for the most part amongst teenagers who face issues at school, not only does this happen here in the United States, but in schools universally. ¨17% of American students report being bullied 2 to 3 times a month or more within a school semester¨ (Valerie). Although this is mostly seen among teens it can also happen between children and even adults. The purpose of this study is to identify the most prevalent forms of bullying on a high school campus and identify which strategies are most effective to prevent or respond to bullying. The study will also identify the most effective strategies to improve student achievement and attendance for those students who have experienced bullying. Students must feel safe to learn. Students who are bullied have a propensity to avoid the bullies; therefore, they choose not to attend school. Poor attendance often will result in poor grades and even dropping out of school.
The present study concerns longitudinal research on bullying perpetration and peer victimization. A focus is on school factors of school climate and school identification which are conceptualized related but distinct constructs.
Bullying at school is a big problem that is found in all the schools in the United States and across the world. Since the late 1990s there have been several fatal school shootings committed by victims of bullying that have brought bullying major media attention. This has resulted in an increase of awareness about the harmful effects on the kids being bullied as well as the bullies themselves. This has brought a large amount of local, state, and nationwide programs designed to try to prevent bullying or to at least try to contain the problem. “In an effort to adequately address the problem, many schools are taking a proactive approach through prevention and intervention, but how do we know if and when such intervention is effective? First and foremost, we must have an accurate understanding of the dynamic and complex phenomenon of bullying across development and as it spans the multiple levels of the social ecology” (Casper, Meter, & Card, 2015, par 2). Many psychologists, sociologists, and school administrators have been publishing research on school bullying. Bullying is a significant threat to many children because it causes psychological problems not only for those who get bullied but also those who do the bullying. Even though bullying is a significant problem the are few solutions that can help prevent or significantly reducing bullying like reporting bullying, know the characteristics, and passing laws.
According to students, schools respond inadequately, if at all, to reported incidents of bullying. When Frank Barone, principal of Amsterdam High School in Amsterdam, New York, asked hundreds of eighth graders if they had ever been bullied, more than half (58.8 percent) responded in the affirmative. Yet when he asked their teachers how many students had been bullied, they put the figure at 16 percent. Clearly, adults don't recognize the extent of bullying that children face every day. This shows that administration can easily miss important warning signs that point to school violence.
Growing up in a very little town in Illinois was a lot different than growing up in Houston, Texas. When I was in the fourth grade I found many things to have changed about my surroundings, I currently lived in a place where, the people thought and acted differently. I know now reading about it and understanding more that some of those changes were for the good and some were not. Small town living has its advantages such as, very close friendships, close approximately to may things, and friendly people. Looking back, I also realized that there were a lot of disadvantages such as lack of transportation, affects of a poor education, no opportunities for growth, crime, no diversity, and low paying jobs and housing. Now that I am older, and aware of the affects of living in a small town, I can see how these many things affected my life and will continue affect it in the future.
Living and growing up in a small town is better than doing so in a big city.
Over the past couple of decades, schools all across the nation have noticed a significant rise in the amount of bullying taking place among their students. “Two decades ago, bullying was often seen as a rare occurrence, where small groups of parents sought protection for their children with the school district”, stated by Vikki Healy Ortiz, writer of the article “New inclusive approach helps schools fight bullying”. However, the same cannot be said for our society in today’s world. Our modern world has advanced tremendously over the past few decades and there are even more opportunities for children to be susceptible to feeling isolated from others because they are simply unique. In today’s society, children have the potential to bully each other outside of the classroom as well.
To expect greatness in any field of life, it all starts from a place of quality education and that's what America has constantly strived for. School is the place where everyone is given equal opportunity to learn and shape himself or herself into contributing members of society. At the same time each individual’s academic success defines what it means to have a good life. Unfortunately, schools face lots of problems trying to do the right thing. The sample collected included a total of 1,495 parents of 16 elementary schools, 18 middle schools, and 12 high schools students, however; only half (773) were eligible participants. Data were collected through a survey administered by the school district in October through December. Parents were informed about the purpose of the survey and provided a link and password to access to the survey. The major findings indicated that parent’s responses to bullying were to talk to their child and contact a teacher or administrator when their child is victimized. Furthermore, the study found that parents’ perceptions of the school climate was related to the likelihood of contacting teacher of administrator. Parents who viewed the school climate as safe and supportive believed that they will not need to contact the school due to the notion that the school can effectively and efficiently take care of their child’s
Today's life has many difficulties and people are the victims, so they plan to make it easy as they canother. So they can reach a good position. They have more friends in the community since it is small. The village people always try to protect their traditional habits and culture. The village has clean air and the environment is very beautiful. The village has less noise and rush. So the pollution is less. The village has not lot of vehicles. So roads are less dangerous for driving cycling. They can get fresh vegetables and fresh fruits. The environment of the village is pleasant and silent and it has scenic beauty. The village has not only good points, but also it has bad points.
