Daniel Parra Mrs. Padgett English IV, Period 2 7 December 2010 After School Programs The impact that after school programs have on young children affects every aspect of their lives. Although some may feel after school programs are a waste of time and money, it has been proven that they improve children’s social and academic skills. Without these special designed programs, children may not be able to develop into the kinds of adults which will benefit society in the future. It is important that society understand the importance of after school programs. To cut back on after school programs to better the economy is only taking away from the children and opening new doors to them, which can ultimately lead them to jail or possibly …show more content…
Learning how to communicate is often overlooked but its an essential skill for anyone. An example of how important this truly is would be a job interview. Everyone at some point will have to interview for a job to support themselves and their family. At most interviews, employers are looking for people who seem to communicate well with others and can present themselves by communicating their attributes. These communications skills that are necessary aren’t easy to come by. Although one may think it would be easy, many people wont be able to successfully land a job because of communication. One person may be the most qualified, but if you can not communicate well then it will not matter. After school programs can also socially benefit a child. Programs are often designed to teach a child how to be a leader as well as a team player. Throughout one’s life there will be situations where one will need to work in a group as well as lead a group of people. After school programs involving sports, really hone in on a child’s ability to behave and interact in a group environment. The participants must work together in order to achieve a common goal which is to ultimately win. In doing so, they must interact and communicate in a way which will be most beneficial for the entire group. This occurs not only in sports but in everyday life. At a job, one may have to work with others to
Also, it was found that 86 percent of respondents felt that after-school programs are a necessity. They felt that it is absolutely imperative that children are taken care of after-school. Finally, in the interview, elementary school principals were interviewed and 75 percent of those principals felt that after-school programs are extremely important. Principals see the importance in having these programs, and they see the positive effects they have on the students. (Ansell, 2004).
In a society it is essential to have effective communication skills, without those things can be very difficult. When you say communication people tend to generally just think about verbal communication and while speaking and listening is a large portion of what communication is it is a lot deeper than that and some people believe some of the other aspects like body language and facial expressions to be even more important in the maintaining of effective communication skills than forms of verbal communications.
Communication is one of the bigger factors of life don't you think? In the book “The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective Teens” it states that, you have two ears and one mouth and you need to know how to use them. If you don't know how to communicate with people good and face to face you aren't going to make it far in life. Also because the deepest need in a human heart is to be understood.
Sports can bring positive social change. Sports at an early age can do so much for society. In Henslin’s book Sociology A Down-To-Earth Approach he breaks down the agents of socialization, or people or groups that affect our self-concept, attitude, behaviors or other orientations toward life (79). Sports can be an agent of socialization for children because it teaching socialization and team concept. Children involved in team sports at a younger age learn about discipline. Children involved in sports learn about teamwork at an early age and how to work in groups later in life. Teaching children good behavior and responsibilities through sports is a great technique. Good coaches can be the role models and leader kids need to develop positive leadership.
The South Carolina Afterschool Alliance program strives to reach the community and explain the importance of after-school programs. They provide information and guidelines to organizations and groups on how to have effective after-school programs. The program

After school, from 3 to 6 p.m, is a critical period of time in a child’s life. After school programs help keep kids safe and inspire them to learn during that period of time. After school programs are organized programs that youth can participate in outside of a traditional school day. Enrolling children in afterschool programs would provide them with benefits that unenrolled children would not receive, such as reduce risky behavior and promote physical health. After school programs provide a safe environment for children, while positively impacting their academics, safety, and their future.
I have been in the after school program for almost 4 months and 2 weeks and I always wanted to know how the kids feel when they come to after school program. The after school program at St. John's has been the right place for most children, that have parents that work every day and closes from work late. However, how do the kids feel when they come to the after school program? Do they prefer being at home after a long day in school? These were some questions I ask myself when I go to the after school program. I remember having a conversation with one of the kids and he said, “I can’t wait to go back home and rest, I'm so tired”. This triggered me to know how the kids feel when they are at the after school program. Furthermore, to find the information on what I wanted, I had to conduct a survey at the after school program to help me understand how the kids feel when they go to the program. I had to set up the questions in a friendly and easy form for the kids to answer the questions to in an understandable way. I went about constructing this survey by using less complicated sentences in the question that I asked.
Having good social skills won’t only help in sports, but also in everyday life. “Learning how to cooperate in a manner that is best for all and that enhances one's chances of accomplishment is of great value that goes way beyond the athletic field.” (Mango) This quote shows that competitive sports help with cooperation. Cooperation is a skill that will help them at school and work and is a great skill to have to help improve their character. Next, competitive sports help them to not have negative behavior. “According to the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, youth sports can help deter negative behavior, such as joining a gang, because competitive sports provide an outlet for expression, friendship and controlled aggression.” This quote is written by Sarah Davis and proves that competitive sports make kids less likely to contribute to negative things. Being busy from sports makes kids have less time on their hands to be bored and do bad things that they will regret in the future. Also, they don’t want to get kicked off their team and let their teammates down from doing something bad. Third of all, competitive sports help to create friendships. In the article, The Benefits of Competitive Athletic Sports, Kirk Mango says, “Participating in sports gives athletes the ability to develop tight and lasting friendships with others who have common interests.” Having things in common and spending a lot
When most people hear the words “after school program,” the first thoughts that cross their minds are often associated with babysitting. However, that is not the case. An after school program is a place where children are able to grow and develop their developmental skills. After school programs are able to help children in impoverished neighborhood, are able to stop the cycle of poverty, and are able to create new circumstances for their lives (After School Alert Issue Brief). A belief shared throughout most after school programs is that they should serve in areas of all socioeconomic classes. Although many people believe that after school programs are expensive, the benefits one receives from a program
After- school programs have been around for long time. However, their initial purpose was different than what is demanded in today’s society. The after school program was originally developed in urban communities in response to the decline in child labor and the rise in mandatory schooling. This combination altered the day of an urban child. The child would go to school, and come home with nothing to do. They could not work anymore because of child labor laws. With this being a new law, parents did not know what to do with their children because they had to work into the late hours of the evening. Also, urban housing had unkempt, undesirable conditions for living. This caused many
After school programs are often broad-based, incorporating a variety of activities beyond schoolwork, a finding that comes
During this quarter, I have volunteered in Chinese Information and Service Center (CISC) in Chinatown. It is a community-based organization that helps Asians and other immigrants throughout King County succeed their new life in this foreign country with an unfamiliar culture and language. The after-school program I worked with is one of the programs offered in CISC that aims for children from grade 1 to 8 who are from low-income families, recent immigrants or limited language abilities to enrich and empower them socially, culturally, and academically. More specifically, we help children practicing social skills, academic knowledge and language usage during play time, homework hour, diverse daily activity and reading hour. All we do is
What children do during after-school hours has become a public concern among parents, educators, and policy makers. This is why the After-School Programs can provide a diverse set of benefits for children. These benefits include; keeping children off the streets, improving their social skills in an appropriate setting, helping children to achieve academic goals, promote overall well being and helping children obtain tips on staying healthy. Goals of after-school programs range from providing supervision and reliable and safe childcare for youth during the after-school hours to alleviating many of society’s ills, including crime, the academic achievement gap, substance use, and other behavioral problems and academic shortcomings.
