The United States faces many ethical issues with the age of enlistment in the military as time passes with each generation. Most American citizens do not agree with some the laws the government sets in place. People often argue that the majority of the time, the government is looking out for what is best for the country instead of the people. Critics consistently claim that the military should raise the age of enlisting for military service until 21. Parents and adults believe that the military should should raise the age requirement because parents believe that young adolescents are not ready for join military service at such a young age. Studies suggest that most teenagers’ minds do not completely develop until they are in their 20’s. Changing the age of enlistment would protect teenagers and increase the military’s capabilities. Some teenagers hold the belief that serving America through the military is more important than going to college and obtaining a degree. Individuals in America …show more content…
Personnel consume drugs and alcohol in the military now more than in pervious years. Research suggests that the top three used substances in the military are cocaine, cannabis, and alcohol (NIDA). Most of the military that uses these drugs and alcohol are usually between the age of 18 to 25 years old (NIDA). Individuals utilize these substances for the purposes of relieving stress from the harsh training, home sickness, and the potential of fighting (Monti). If the United States military adjusts the age limit to 21, there would be much less alcohol and drug abuse in the military. Young teenagers are more likely to abuse these substances than adults would because young adults are not mature enough to handle military service. Raising the enlistment age to 21 would promote the safety of the military and young Americans because it would decrease the likelihood of drug
The age of 18 has been the minimum age to join any United States military branch for decades now. Many people would like to see the minimum age to become 21, the same age you can drink, but it is, for many reasons, impractical. The age of legal consent in the United States is a major factor to discuss. Other issues will be the effects of joining at a young age. When a teenager turns 18 he or she becomes an adult and is allowed to make their own choices. The minimum age of 18 years to join any branch of the United States military should remain the same because at that age a person is considered to be a consenting adult.
Every able-bodied American should be required to serve a minimum of two years of military service. We are the first line of defense; whether it be of our county or ourselves. Many are more than willing to turn this responsibility over to someone else. As a society, we are soft, distrustful of one other, thin-skinned, easily distracted, and unwilling to take personal responsibility for our actions. Mandated military service will help establish a more committed nation that is resilient, respectful of rights and freedoms, will enter adulthood with practical work experience and better physical fitness standards. I will inform you of each way military service would be beneficial for the general population.
With all the controversy surrounding mandatory military service, past and recent incidents have shown a greater need to protect ourselves from those who wish to do us harm. Continued decline in enlistment, and a
Required to join the military after high school for two years. Personally, you shouldn't have to be required to join the military after high. Your future is what you make it not what other people make it. If this was your child would you like for someone else to choose their future for them and for them to waist two years doing something they don't enjoy and would have never done if they choose their own future? I will give you many reasons behind why people choose not to join the military now and in the future.
As senior year continues on, more and more members of my class are turning 18. As we legally become adults, we wait for something that makes us feel like an adult. For ladies, nothing really happens. For the gentlemen however, they must sign up for the selective service. The selective service has been a mandatory part of a young mans’ right of passage for almost 100 years, and in that time a draft has only occurred four times. In modern times, no young man even thinks about the draft, because to him, it is a piece of history, and not something of the present era. This idea brings up the question of whether the draft should still be in place, and where or not women should be required to sign up as well.
Advocating for this health disparity requires increased of supportive power, foundation, and execution of a political strategy (Jansson, 2011). To develop policy change, a coalition of individuals and organizations to support substance use prevention strategies is essential. Members of the coalition will include clinicians and organizations whose purpose is to implement prevention strategies among military-connected youth. The Department of Veteran Affairs provides a variety of services pertaining to military families, and adolescent patients would benefit particularly from substance use prevention. The coalition will have policy makers from schools or health-care organizations consider prevention models for military service children.
Throughout human history, war has permeated the lives of billions of people. From early conflicts such as conquests to control vast swaths of land by Alexander the Great and Cyrus the Great to modern, global wars such as the World Wars, the concept of war has been at the forefront of humanity’s mind for centuries. However, in recent years, opposition to war and lack of participation in the military has become a common theme in many countries, including the United States. To help alleviate the troubles caused by lack of participation, the United States instituted a law allowing for the conscription of its citizens. Conscription, which can also be referred to as a draft, is defined as the compulsory drafting of citizens into military service (What). The Draft has been utilized throughout US History in a couple of prominent wars; however, opposition has manifested against the Vietnam War and the draft, rightfully stemming from ethical opposition to the war and hatred for what the war and the draft stood for.
What is something every male who lives past the ripe age of 18 must do or face criminal charges? Turning 18 is a big milestone. Once I turn 18 I am given many rights. But also, when I turn 18 I must sign up for the selective services. Selective services is a system put in place to draft young men to be sent to war. Even though wars aren’t fought by sending masses in to battle, we still have this system in place. We also have a huge army already, so why do we waste money on an outdated system that won’t be used.
1. I have mix feelings about this article. I do not agree with this article, but the part I do agree with this article. The reason I disagree with this article is that not everybody needs the army to be disciplined and to go to college. Even though It does help to pay for college. Is it worth to join the army, just so you can go to school? When people come back from the war, they are suffering from the post-traumatic stress disorder. Anyone can be whatever they want to, they just need put in the work.
1. The United States (US) military should continue to develop performance-enhancing drugs (PED) for military personnel faced with extreme war-zone stressors and sleep deprivation. The US military has utilized PEDs to maintain alertness during extensive missions since World War II (WWII).1 However, there is the potential for substance abuse among both military members and the general populous. In order to maintain preeminence, it is imperative that the US military’s PED programs are more sophisticated than potential enemies.
As the world try and fight the war on terroir the United States has to face the question does it needs to bring back the mandatory military service for our young adults 18-24. If this is brought back will our country suffer in the long run due to our young adults having to give up their rights and educations for guns? Just because our nation cannot stop these terroir attacks does not make it right to add more men and women to our armed forces to show strength. First of all, the army that is built by mandatory service can’t choose the right person to hire, so it chooses someone who isn’t ready to serve in the military field (germiandotnet, 2013). Mandatory military service will not guarantee military will be stronger and it violates freedom
In the case of military service it goes without question that serving is a privilege and a honor for those that decide to serve. However, the question I would like to know is, should we change the way we recruit troops? In saying that and going back to the case study, Sandel presents different ways of military recruitment. The first way of recruitment was by forcing people to serve, the draft. An old tactic that was used years ago in my opinion placed people in positions of being vulnerable and sad because their lives were controlled by people of higher power. The second way of recruitment still involved the draft concept, however it allowed for people to pay random replacements to fill in their spot in fighting in the war and joining the military. There are people that may agree to this
In current times, roughly 99.5% of American citizens don’t serve in the military in their lifetime. But is something that needs to be changed by force? Some people could argue that service in the United States military should be mandatory for everyone–in reality, though, that is an impossible and overall disastrous idea. Military service is something that only some people can do–not all people can deal with the lasting effects of war, including many mental illnesses and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Of course, there are many people who will deal with these things in order to protect our freedom–and others who won’t have to experience these at all. And, even if all people between the ages of 17 and 24 were to sign up to join the
At first glance, a law requiring every young American to serve in the military may seem like a good idea. It can teach work ethic and discipline at a vital age and give adolescents a sense of belonging. But it isn’t as easily carried out as it seems. You can’t just take a certain age range of people out of our economical society (other job roles they could be filling), it would tilt everything off balance. And although it is an honorable job to serve our country, not everybody is cut out for it.
As many other countries mandate young adults partaking in the military for two years, the United States should follow suit. Many beneficial consequences would be rendered as a result of the increase in service. This would also be a great commencement into the real world for any young adult. These statements can be explored by discussing the benefits of free college tuition, disciplined young adults who are ready to follow orders, and the sheer power of numbers.
