Michelangelo once said “The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark” ("Michelangelo Quotes"). I very much agree with this quote because of personal morals and values. Within life we are faced with choices, and sometimes along with those choices we get to decide our own goals. One may choose to aim high knowing that they will be faced with a large failure rate. While others may have chosen to aim too low deliberately conscious of their selection, are satisfied with the consummation. As a high school student, there are many pressures to be what everyone else wants you to be, to be on the same mental level as everyone surrounding you, and …show more content…
In my own life, while going through high school, I have decided to commit myself not only to my grades but to three sports. It is not easy, but it is very much manageable. Although one may think that I choose to do only what is presumed of myself. That person would mostly be wrong. Although high school is hard enough, adding more than one sport has not stopped me from reaching and trying my hardest to go past the installed potential that I have chosen to carry.
Has one that you know ever been involved in any clubs or extracurricular activities? There are so many clubs, groups, and things of that nature that anyone can be involved in. Although as one has read so far, I have already dedicated myself to school and three sports, I took it upon myself to enter four school clubs. Along with those four clubs there were times where my schedule was free. Although, that didn’t always work out because I was always trying to fill it up with after school activities, volunteer work, or something around that area.
In conclusion, it is my opinion that no one should set their goals too low only to achieve all of them, but to set high goals and do not attain them but work harder to achieve them all in the future. In personal experiences, it feels better to accomplish harder
If students would just not get stuck into peer pressure, manage time, and be themselves, then they would strive in high school. Peer pressure is hard to overcome but if students think through the consequences and what could happen to them then it would be easier to overcome. Managing time can easily be fixed if students would plan ahead of time and not wait till the last minute. Fitting in can be hard but everyone just needs to be themselves and not care what others think about you. High school may be a time of struggle but it is for enjoyable times
Throughout my life I have always been involved in sports, whether it's for a team or just with friends they have always been apart of me. Once I entered junior high I began playing competitive baseball, a commitment that taught me how to manage my time. With practices everyday ranging from 2-3 hours I was limited to the time I was able to hangout with friends as I decided to put my schoolwork first. I realized I needed to create a balance between school, sports, and friends so I could further my education as well as do the things I love.
Throughout my time in high school, I have been involved in numerous extracurricular activities. I have been involved in band, choir, golf, speech, theater, Student Council, quiz bowl, and National Honor Society. Though my participation in all of these, I have learned where my skills and interests are strongest.
Certainly, the decision to aim high will be beneficial to one’s overall performance. Have you ever set a goal that no one else believed in? There were times when faith was lost, but despite the odds, you marched on. When you finally accomplished what was believed to be impossible, you felt better than ever. This newfound pride and determination will leak into other aspects of your life and benefit in ways never thought possible. By choosing to set greater expectations, the individual will push themselves to do their best. Greater targets mean there will be more challenges. An increased focus and determination will result from
The transition from being a teenager too an adult often comes with many struggles. In this difficult transition we are supposed to be able to deal with while passing the required classes needed to graduate, pick our career path, and decide who we are supposed to become. From the age of 5, the school systems have told us where/when we are allowed to eat, to ask for permission to go to the bathroom, how we should be seated in a classroom, and what rules we must follow while in a school. Being constantly told what to do and how we should act, what is right and what is wrong can be very discouraging. As a society there is a set of “standards” that have been put into effect in everyone's mind. When we don't meet these academic standards parents and ourselves often get upset as to why we can't be as good as the person next to us. As a result of feeling like you have let yourself and your parents down for not having marks that you should, often you begin to think negatively about yourself. Beginning to believe things such as that you aren't smart, or that you aren't capable of completing school work as well as you think you should be able too according to the “standards” of what is acceptable. What we don't realize is that every person is unique, meaning we have all been given strengths and weaknesses. Focusing on our weaknesses gives us a negative
High school is the time where students feel the pressure to make sure their grades
While being a teenager and starting high school a lot of people are trying to fit in. Relating to a teenage girl, they tend to change a lot to try and
High school students today are not allowed to just be high school students. They need to be an “A+” , five advanced placement classes, a three sport captain, student council president kind of student. Teens can no longer be care free teens, with nothing to worry about. Kids are being forced to stand out from the crowd and make themselves look as good as possible.Students are trying to outshine other students because they have been told all their lives by their parents and society that average is just not good enough.
High school has brought on a lot of new pressures regarding learning and preparing for
High school is a harsh environment where not conforming to certain standards results in being socially out casted. As insecure students trapped in an institution plagued with ridicule, high school remains a void that sucks in those that are unsure of their identity, forcing the individual to conform to the majority. Typically after leaving high school people develop a sense of self and are able to recognize and create their own individuality. As an individual currently enrolled in secondary education I’ve seen the impact first hand. High school dictates what clothes you wear, the music you listen to, and who you can and cannot be friends with. The social hierarchy and the need to conform in these settings remain in place as the consequences of atypical behaviour are unfavourable, thus students conform. In some situations this conformity results in a lack of moral judgement as teens are pressured into what is considered cool or popular. As a result of lack of morals and need to fit in and be accepted students may start smoking, skipping school or doing drugs. Not only does this negatively impact grades but it also introduces the idea that these children are going need to conform for the rest of their life and will never have the opportunity to find their own unique identity. An example of the struggle associated with choosing between conforming and
As a recent high school student, I alone face a diverse of challenges throughout the day, week, month, dealing with other schoolmates, teachers, sports, classwork, homework, bullying, additionally peer pressure. You are judged, head to toe; starting from how you wear you hair, what you wear period, and who you even call your friends or associate with and sports. You endeavor to be the best everyone needs you to be, yet you either fall brief of their expectations or do not even reach the bottom line of standards. You are expected to be like everyone else, you are expected to be someone you are not. Even religion is forced upon some. If you do not do what someone needs you to do, you are deemed down upon and shamed for it. If you generate a mistake
Michelangelo once wrote, “The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving the mark.” This quote is saying that setting your goals high and possibly failing instead of setting them low so they can be accomplished is a problem found in today’s world. People grow personally every time they fail at something in life. Successful people push themselves to be greater than their known inner-self. Setting your goals high help people to unlock their full potential physically and mentally.
In high school you are pressured to do pretty much everything from drinking and drug to vandalizing the school. When
Nancy Darling (2016) explains that students that participate in extracurricular activities tend to be in an environment where they will have much more social experience, as well as have much more interactions with their peers. She notes that the students that participate in the activities tend to say that they have lower levels of stress and tend to have high life satisfaction due to the activities that they are doing in the activity. In her study, Nancy shows that students who participated in the extracurricular activities had higher grades, more positive attitudes towards their studies in school, and having overall lower self-reported levels of depression, and lower levels of substance abuse. The students that didn’t participate in the
It is easy and natural to settle into a rut. Why try something new when we are already doing that we are good at? High achievers go further. They take risks. They move out of their comfort zones. They take on difficult challenges. They push themselves to acquire new skills and to face new examinations of their abilities. This means that they run the risk of failure.
