Depression is a very hard thing to deal with, both for the victim and for families of the person suffering. The family may be tolerant, but may not understand. Friends may not understand why the person “just can 't be happy.” Some may consider the victim to be lazy because he or she may not have the energy to do much. To add to this, many well meaning Christians may get involved telling the victim and the family that the problem is a lack of faith. These people may consider depression a spiritual issue and attempt to counsel the person that way. All of these people mean well, but they do not understand the problem. These people may try to help, but may simply make it worse. Depression is a delicate subject, but there is help and no one is alone.

Depression is a condition that affects people more primarily in the work force, it lasts forever if untreated. In the United States those with depression are “two times to three times more likely to be unemployed, and their employment rate is 15 percentage points lower than for those without depression” (by Christopher Prinz from PBS Newshour). It is not easy for someone with depression or any mental illness to apply for jobs or get interviewed. People take depression as a joke. The sad truth is that most people don’t realize something is seriously wrong until they’re saying “rest in peace” and attending a funeral. People often joke about depression and they joke about being “depressed” for things like failing a test and some even get being depressed and being upset all mixed up. Not everyone knows how serious depression actually is but some do and they simply don’t care. The media portrays depression as something light, something that will just pass. What do you think of when someone says they have depression? Most people would think that means that the person lies in bed and cries a lot during an episode but sometimes people act just the same as they would normally. Not everyone with depression presents it in the same way. There are major changes that can point to depression and these are different depending on the person. While depression cannot be completely cured you can manage it better. In order to better understand how people that have depression behave we have to look at the stereotypes, the symptoms, and the treatment options that are available.

Depression already affects the mood of individuals and makes it difficult to achieve hopes and desires (ideal-self) but it is also essential to improve societies stigma of mental illness to improve on social norms surrounding the duties of individuals (ought-self).
