Slavery is involuntary work performed for other for no pay with threat if punishment. While many believe slavery is a shameful relic of our past, slavery is still an unfortunate aspect of the world today. Amazing Grace, an acclimated film, chronicles the lifelong work of British abolitionist William Wilberforce who successfully ended the slave trade throughout the British empire. The accompanying documentary about the National Underground Railroad and Freedom Center describes the state of slavery in the contemporary world. In conjunction, the film and the documentary presents key differences and similarities between historical and modern slavery in three essential areas. These three important areas are the work slaves are forced to do, the demographics of slavery, and the abuse slaves must endure. Work is the primary driver of the slave market. For most of human history, slavery was so commonplace it was impossible to create an accurate statistic of the total number of slaves. Multitudinous Africans died aboard vile slave ships before even reaching their destination. Today there are more than an estimated twenty-seven million slaves. Historically, slavery often existed in specific regions, such as the how the Ohio River once formed the boundary between the free North and South, where slavery still thrived. Now, slavery has now grown to be worldwide, affecting people from all over the globe. Slavery has also become more invisible in modern times.
