America Must Be A Civil War Against Our Democratic Government

Gridlock is one of the United States leading problems, and the main reason why people find the government to be “useless” or “slow” when trying to come to a consensus on major issues. Congressional gridlock is when neither the House or Congress seems to be able to respond with solutions to our nation’s pressing problems, and fails to enact any meaningful legislation to fix national issues. Gridlock mainly occurs when the president and the majority in one or both houses have different political beliefs and are in different parties. You hear everyone talking about gridlock and how it needs to be fixed, but you never actually see our political leaders doing anything about it.

Congressional gridlock has become a major problem over the past several years, the lack of power that any-one party has held for more than just a couple years means that very little has been accomplished by Congress. A Congressional gridlock is a situation when a law can not be passed due to disagreements either between political parties, branches of government or between the houses of Congress. These disagreements that do not end in compromise slow the legislative process and leave both parties unhappy. Gridlock can also occur within the Congressional Senate when a minority party member begins a filibuster.

The Civil War, the bloodiest war in American History, had many causes that turned brother against brother. The issue of slavery was the largest conflict between the north and the south. The south was upset with many things such as Slavery, government, and legislative issues. All these conflicts eventually led to secession, and the horrific war began.

Congressional gridlock is not a modern invention in the world of politics. Alexander Hamilton use to complain about the deadlock “flaw” in the design of Congress. In politics, “Congressional gridlock” is a situation in Congress where there are complications in passing laws for the people. Gridlock could be prevented if we had a democracy for the majority and unified. While many view this as frustrating, gridlocks are starting to become a political norm. This leads to a divided government. Congressional gridlock in the states has become an everyday topic that nobody really understands what to do. The creation of gridlock is seen every day. Congressional gridlock in the United States is at a high currently, doubling since the 1950s. Gridlock is the slowing of the legislative processes due to the difficulty of congressional officials to agree on certain bills and or laws. Gridlock makes the passage of legislation time consuming and hardly any progress can be accomplished. This is how Congress acquired the nickname “Do Nothing Congress.”This usually occurs when both parts of Congress, the House of Representatives and the Senate, are of opposing parties. This then makes the President have the final say.

Congressional gridlock has been around for centuries in Congress and does not seem to be changing anytime soon. Congressional gridlock refers to the inaction of the government and failure to make a decision or legislative law that satisfy the needs of the people. This inaction of the government and stagnation occurs when two parties cannot agree on a single matter, and they cannot come to a good agreement on how or when the law is going to be passed, thus leaving complex problems in the nation unhandled. Congressional gridlock does not just come and take over the government on its own, though. It is evident that congressional gridlock is a major problem in the American government that needs to be addressed because there are so many root causes that the government fails to fix including gerrymandering and a lack of “bridge-builders.” Solutions to these causes that have yet to be made include improving the system of checks and balances and reducing representative dynamics and some of the nation’s most pressing problems that should not even be examples of congressional gridlock include climate change and the gun laws issue.

The American democracy is one of the most peaceful kinds of government in the world although it is a long way from utopia. The democracy in which we live has many strengths and weaknesses. Neither strengths or weaknesses out weigh one another, but it is necessary to have both due to the varying definitions. A democracy is a government that is run by the people. The politicians that we elect to run our government are human and they are susceptible to mistakes based on their own strengths and weaknesses. The strengths and weaknesses they possess are reflected into our government but at least “we the people” elect them and they are not chosen for us.

The other question that occurs is what causes congressional gridlocks? A gridlock occurs when the ratio between passed bills and legislation decreases. A gridlock also happens when two legislative houses or when the executive branch can’t agree. Another factor that causes congressional gridlock are the grater polarization of the parties.

The Civil War was inevitable. It was inevitable because the south had believed in slavey, while the north did not believe in slavery. The Compromise of 1850 let California to enter the union as a free state. Territories such as New Mexico and Utah vote on slavery. It had ended slave trade in Washington D.C., and it had began the Fugitive Slave Act which had helped the south. “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, written by Harriet Beeher Stowe, had told how slavery was wrong to many people. The south did not find it helpful to them.

There is no doubt, that the Civil War was unavoidable, and deserving of a name such as “an irrepressible conflict”. One of the most central issues that lead up to the Civil War was slavery. Slavery has continued to be an issue throughout United States history ever since the Constitution. And the conflict with slavery will later on develop into more problems and events within the country. Some may say that the Civil War could have been prevented. However, because of westward expansion, Abraham Lincoln becoming elected as president, and the Battle of Fort Sumter the Civil War became officially inevitable.

For Centuries in the United States, Congressional gridlock has been one of the main difficulties of prosperity and progress. The government of the United States has had the opportunity to make the life of its citizens better but due to the epidemic of gridlock a lot of the issues we face are unresolved or ignored. Going forward I will give causes, solutions and some examples of the effect that it has had on the democracy of the United States as well as examples of congressional gridlock.

On April 9 at the Appomattox courthouse a marvelous event occurred. Lee surrendered to Union Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant. The terms of the surrender were more than generous. For all the Confederate soldiers had to do, was turn in their guns to receive the ability to take their horses or mules and return to their home immediately. The Confederate soldiers received food from the Union along with the other superlatives.

“Let’s end the civil war” is an article, written in 1962 by Harry Golden a northern journalist. He wrote this article to highlight the Civil war centennial in the U.S. and the idea that the centennial committees in the whole of the south, which wanted us to believe that the civil war is not over. There are still participations in the reengagement of the civil war and some of the actors still hope that the civil war will be restored. Harry golden thinks that the Americans see the centennial more as a celebration of the civil war, than a centennial. And that is why one of the main themes in the article is misunderstanding. It is a misunderstanding between the south and their view of the centennial. He thinks that

Why is it so difficult to accomplish anything in American government? The answer lies within three features of American government: the Hyperpluralist theory, separation of powers with checks and balances, and divided government. All these aspects of government result in gridlock, “a condition that occurs when interests conflict and no coalition is strong enough to form a majority and establish policy, so nothing gets done” (19).

The American Revolution marked significant changes in the political, social, and economic status of the Americans. For a long, time the lives of the Americans were darkened by the British colonial rule. The British government passed several intolerable Acts. For instance, the Massachusetts Government Act was a restriction to town meetings. As a result, the American opponents began collective actions to disapprove the colonial rule. After a long struggle, the Americans overthrew the existing rule. However, the new dawn did not provide freedom to all citizens. The slaves were compelled to continue supplying forced labor to the Whites. The resultant effect of oppression pushed the slaves to start fighting for the equality. In this case, it is evident that the Civil War was a direct consequence of the American Revolution.[1]
