Before the Bill of Rights, in 1787 the delegates of the thirteen states all got together in Philadelphia to write up the U.S Constitution. But this was only the first attempt at the constitution because there were flaws in it that needed to be fixed. This first constitution only relayed what the government could do and not what it couldn’t do. This was a problem because people in the government could do anything because there was no say in what they were not allowed to do. Another flaw was that this constitution only really governed on what white men could do. It had no rights for men of different races. When Americans first set their eyes on the 20th century, they hoped for a better life without war and a prospering economy. This vision of freedom and liberty in America was quite bold, knowing there were challenges ahead. There’s always a price to pay and obstacles to go through when the circumstances are not ideal. During the early 1900s, our country was evolving and starting a new era. An era where blacks were no longer slaves, civil rights movements were occurring, and citizens were having issues with the law. It was a moment in time that helped us understand why these events occurred. From those events, wars, and movements, we can learn and improve from any flaws we may encounter. As a nation, we will be better prepared and aware of these scenarios because we reflect on our country’s past.

ACLU is the American Civil Liberties Unit. This group, started from a small group of visionaries into the nation’s original supporter of the rights preserved in the U.S. Constitution. In 2008, a record high number of people were detained in ICE facilities across the United States following the presidency of George W. Bush. In 2009, President Obama not only decreased the number of detainees being held, but he mandated death reviews, called for a new inspection process, and proposed new standards for detention centers within this country.

Also concerned is the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). This is an organization that is dedicated to raising awareness of civil liberties. The PATRIOT Act, as the name suggests is supposed to protect the citizens of the country from attacks across its borders. America’s governmental practice of excluding these police officers is only promoting these behaviors, and a stop should be put to them. The United States have seen a rush in incarnations by placing many people in jail more than the last four decades. Mostly because of the war on drugs. So far whites and blacks have been involved in many drug offenses, possession and sales, at a very comparable rate. “While African Americans comprise 13% of the US population and 14% of monthly drug users they are 37% of the people arrested for drug offenses” (Marc Mauer). The police usually stop blacks and Latinos at rates higher than whites. Within New York City, the people of color make up about half of the city’s population, while 80% of all the police stops were of blacks and Latinos. When whites were stopped, only 8% were frisked. While blacks and Latinos are stopped 85% were frisked according to information provided by the NYPD stop and frisk data report. The data is almost the same in most other places in America. The America civil liberties union found blacks are three times more likely to be stopped than whites in California.

The American Civil Liberties Union is widely considered to be an immigrant’s rights project committed to enforcing civil rights initiatives in a bottom-up approach. Since its inception, the ACLU has emerged as a frontrunner in the protection of freedoms and rights through impact proceedings and public outreach which spans across 25 years.

America was founded on the astute principles of democracy and the potential benefits of freedom it derives. America, unlike many of its foreign counterparts has long recognized the benefits of individual rights, freedoms and privileges and has fought to the death to protect them. Currently, America aims to spread these principles of democracy around the globe in an effort to create a better quality of life for all mankind. Even with these lofty and ambitious goals, America, on occasion fails to uphold these principles within its own borders. Too often, America has overlooked the problems prevalent within its own country while criticizing other nations about their own circumstances. Many of these overlooked issues including slavery, discrimination, women's rights and others have left an unfavorable image in American history. The African American community in particular has worked very diligently over the years to end segregation as a means to achieve equal rights for its entire constituent base.

The ACLU, American Civil Liberties Union, is despised by many but it helps our country and many ways concerning constitutional rights, equality, and protecting our country.the ACLU a very strong advocate on following constitutional and this is playing on multiple occasions.
