American Community Colleges And The American Association Of Community College

The American Community Colleges were established in the twentieth century to address the needs of the workforce development (The American Association of Community College, 2015). Moreover, skilled workers were critical to the economic growth and strength of America’s society (American Association of Community College, 2015). Although the community college’s mission has not changed, employment skills have changed. In order to yield tangible economic benefits to the community, community colleges have to start to think more creatively (Rockefeller Institute of Government, 2010). For over thirty years, community colleges has been the go-to reference for their role in economic development and services rendered to the community (American Community College, 2014). Because of the substantial need for industries to obtain and maintain skilled workers, the community college system is pursuing strategies to help employers attract the preferred worker. This is done through education, training, management counseling, and other initiatives (Rockefeller Institute of Government, 2010). Consequently, knowledge is power; higher education’s primary role and contribution to economic development remains in its traditional obligation: creating an educated society. In addition to that, the current economy has caused the conventional academic mission to be extremely significant (Rockefeller Institute of Government, 2010).
