Many people dream of going to a well-known Public Four-Year College when they think about their future. But, for some, Community College is the only option. “ The Benefits Access for College Completion (BACC) initiative was a multi-year initiative designed to provide community college students with access to a full range of public benefits in order to reduce financial barriers to college completion.” (Duke-Benfield) This initiative took effect for people who attend college and have families to attend to at home. Completing college is not such an easy task when trying to provide for yourself and a family. “For students who are supporting families, the cost is even higher as housing, food, and child care costs add to the total.” (Duke-Benfield) The BACC provides people access to help …show more content…

This initiative is in place to prevent these individuals from dropping a class or dropping out of college to work more hours and provide more for their children. More Community Colleges should provide this option to students in order to increase completion rates.
The Community College has been a uniquely American institution for more than 100 years. The first Community College was Jolliet Junior College, founded in 1901. Initially focused on liberal arts, they expanded in the 1930s to include teaching technical skills and trades in response to the great depression. Then after WWII, in response to the GI bill, there was an even greater need for educational institutions to serve their local needs. In, “ National Profile of Community Colleges; Trends and Statistics.” it is noted that the Truman Commission, in 1948, suggested a national network of community colleges. By 1960, that network became a reality and today community colleges educate more than half of the nation’s undergraduates. So why do we need to improve the community college graduation rates?
