There are a couple divisions that I am interested in, the American Mental Health Counseling Association (AMHCA), and the International Association of Addictions & Offender Counselors (IAAOC). The reason these two catch my eye is my passion is to work with individuals with addiction (substance abuse) problems and people who have suffered from trauma in their lives. Even though I know these disciplines can be challenging or even heartbreaking at times, when you are working with a client and witness them making positive strides in their life it makes it all worthwhile. Although during those difficult times it is always good to have good supervision and connect with other professionals in your area, and keep up with the current issues in the counseling
In the coaching discussion it was not said that my conduct was not meeting expectations, but not allow myself to be in situations where it appears I’m being insubordinate.
Growing up as a child, many children would watch cartoons and play video games, but I took an odd liking into watching videos about different mental illness. For the longest, I have been fascinated with the human mind; trying to figure out how it works. Entering into my adulthood, I became an individual who was an open vessel for people to dump their problems into. I get gratification out of being able to help people with their problems and see them with a smile on their face. Being a counselor's is not just making someone's day or listening to their problems, but it is also about spreading mental health awareness to other individuals. I selected the Mental Health Counseling program because one day I seek to become a Mental Health Counselor. Having a Mental Health Counseling degree, will
Jason, I appreciated reading through your reading response on the initial phone intake and resistance in counseling. It is encouraging to hear how God has been moving in your heart to help men and husbands. I hope you are able to find tangible ways to encourage them to seek counseling. Your conclusion on the negative stigma on counseling within the Christian community is something I have noticed as well. It seems like Christians are more willing to say a person does not have ‘enough faith’ or their problems with go away with prayer. It is frustrating that many times people are not willing to seek counseling because they feel like it is a waste of time. I think counseling is valuable because as believers, we were meant to live in community with

There are many theoretical models of counseling. Often, a diverse approach or the use of several approaches is best for the resolution of problems. I utilize several different theories and strategies in my role as a counselor. However, it is the Individual personal theory and the Family theory model that anchors my orientation to counseling as a Christian counselor.
As a counseling student, it is very important to formulate a counseling theory tailored to ones’ own personality and beliefs. A counselor may choose a single theory to model when practicing therapy or pick and choose components and techniques from various theories, otherwise known as eclecticism. No theory is considered right or wrong. Understanding the different therapeutic approaches are important to effective counseling, however, counselors must also understand their own personal value, view of human nature, human behavior, counseling techniques and the purpose and goals of counseling. Understanding these components along with the different theoretical approaches will provide the counselor with a 9 knowledge of their own counseling, orientation and is essential to not only the productivity of counseling but the growth of the counselor as well.
Earning a Master’s in Guidance and Counseling would be the ideal next step to fulfill my goals becoming a youth counselor. Implementing and designing a comprehensive school-counseling program needs to ensure that they are meeting state standards as well as the ASCA National Model. Assessing the comprehensive school-counseling program allows school counselors consider how well they are meeting the needs of the students, and meeting the requirements of the ASCA National Model and state requirements. School counselors gain the ability to assess the effectiveness of the program and answer the question “How are students different as a result of the school counseling program” (Susan Ireland, M. ED., 2014, slide 1).
The American Counseling Association (ACA) developed the code of ethics with six principles in mind that they thought were the foundation for ethical behavior and decision making: autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, justice, fidelity and veracity (American Counseling Association, 2014). This lead to the six different purposes for the code of ethics. First, it sets ethical obligations and ethical guidance for professional counselors (American Counseling Association, 2014). Second, it recognizes ethical dilemmas that are relevant (American Counseling Association, 2014). Third, it clarifies what is ethically expected and accepted of its members (American Counseling Association, 2014). Fourth, it is an ethical guide for members deciding the best course of action and expectations for conduct, when it comes to those using their counseling services (American Counseling Association, 2014). Fifth, it supports the mission of the American Counseling Association (American Counseling Association, 2014). Finally, it has standards that serve as a baseline for questions and complaints for ACA members (American Counseling Association, 2014). To fulfill the purposes of the code of ethics, the ACA categorizes the ethics into nine different areas (American Counseling Association, 2014).

As I walked to the Hazen Center for my 8PM appointment, unaware of what to expect, my nerves slowly aroused, for this is the first counseling session I ever encountered. After filling out a few forms and waiting patiently for about five minutes, my name was called and I finally came face to face with my counselor, Sean Spooner. After shaking hands and introducing ourselves, I took a seat on the couch, attempting to ease my worries. Based on the knowledge I obtained from Intro to Counseling such as Counseling environment, self-disclosure, and counselor attributes, I could not help but observe and evaluate my surroundings. The couch was a comfortable seating with enough room to lay down and the office had awards and certificates displayed on the wall and desk. My counselor sat on what I call the “comfy chair” approximately diagonal from me. Sean Spooner’s persona seemed apprehensively inviting. The apprehensiveness is a result of his slightly shaky voice and facial expressions. The inviting portion is a result of his professionalism. He explained to me the reasoning for these sessions, videotaping, reiterating procedures, guidelines of confidentiality, signing more forms and in the midst still managed to ask if I am well, have any questions or concerns, which did make me feel more comfortable in comparison to my earlier arrival.
