Before I begin, I’d like to say that American History X is without a doubt the one of the best films ever created to counter prejudice and to promote that any individual has the potential for evil. With that being said, I would like to first start out with the films history: According to the IMDb website, American History X was first released in 1998; the film recounts the narrative of two white siblings, Derek and Danny Vinyard who both shared very diverse times throughout their lifetime. (American History X 1). In addition, the problem with the brothers racisms towards dark-skinned individuals throughout the movie first started after the Vinyard’s father’s homicide by a dark skinned male, Derek being the older brother, was burning inside
America is the greatest country of all time. It has had many important years and each and every one of those years have been eventful. But there lies a question… What is the most important year for America in the Twentieth century? The answer to that question would happen to be the year, 1962.
As a Hispanic, I suppose I should expect or, be prepared, rather, for racism and discrimination. Thankfully, I have not experienced either.. yet. Our world is not perfect; things take place that we rather not know about, but ignoring the problem seems to only make matters worse. The movie American History X, is an admirable attempt to inform us about these types of malicious ignorance that plague our society. The impeccable acting, artistic cinematography, occasional adrenaline-pumping score, and slightly faulted, though award-worthy script, all combine to create an overall exceptional film. American History X should not be immediately dismissed as an archetypal account of a
Will racism ever come to an end or will its path go on infinitely? For the most part, the majority of people respect those who are different either in color, race, and/or heritage; however, there are those few that hold bigoted views towards people who are different than they are. The movie American History X by Tony Kaye displays an example of people who hold bigoted views. Derek, a Neo-Nazi leader, must contend with his actions relating to his past racist views and actions. This powerful movie explores its characters thoroughly and gives reasons why people become so callous and turn towards a racist group. It also exposes insight to problems that plague America when it comes to racism in

In “American History” by Cofer's, Elena suffers a racial a situation when she ventures to her buddy Eugene's house. Elena was welcomed at the entryway by Eugene mother, not Eugene after Elena reveals she is Eugene's buddy and there to study, the mother's contemptuous reaction towards the young woman depending on what she looks like. She naturally makes an unequal connection amongst Elena and herself. At whatever point somebody says “you individuals”, there is a grandiose state of mind behind it. It's as Eugene's mum looks down on Elena's because of her Puerto Rican culture, which makes a strained circumstance. Indeed, even before Eugene's mother makes the “you individual” remarks, she inquires whether she lives in the apartment building on
I started writing my essay by thinking about the obstacles that I had encountered in life. In my essay, I wrote about how I was struggling in the AP U.S. History class. The most challenging part of writing my essay is how to organize the essay. It is very difficult to decide which moment to include in the essay. I wanted to focus on the AP U.S. History story, but I also believed that it was important to talk about the struggles that I had to face when my family immigrated to Chicago. The least challenging part of writing my essay is coming up with the similes and metaphors because I often used them in my writing, so they just came naturally in my head. The feedbacks that I received from my peers were very helpful. They helped me fix my grammar
I think that as my time as a DHS student that American History has been one of the most interesting classes that I have taken a part in. I enjoyed learning about how we formed as a countries as well as the issues that we faced internally and how we dealt with them. Something that I had never realized before taking this class was how much art was effected by U.S. principals at the time. For example, in World War II with propaganda in newspapers and in cartoons, we depicted the Japanese as inferior, as well as less intelligent. The reason that they did this was so that people were not intimidated by the Japanese and were not afraid to fight them in the Pacific. Before this year I did not realize the profound effect that art had on society and how people viewed issues of the time. I really enjoyed this class because it focused onto these aspects that other history classes did not go into such depth about and opened my mind to different ways to make connections to ideas.
The theme of prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination in American History X is well conveyed by the actions and attitudes of most of the main characters towards the minority groups and most specifically, the people of color. The main character in the movie is Derek Vinyard, and his white supremacist nature is highly influenced by his father views toward the people of color. The movie is full of terrible and dark scenes as well as violence, most of which is practiced by Derek based on propaganda. Derek’s father influenced Derek’s view of the black people since he was a kid by talking about the black communication in a negative view (American History X, 1998). As a result, Derek’s mind created a bad, negative image of the blacks in the United States. After a black addicted guy caused the death of his father, Derek hate for the black people became reaffirmed, and he became a member of the Neo-Nazi.
The movie American History X truly shows how racism upon race, class and gender was really effected the world. The movie was based upon the Vineyard family who seemed like they had a lot going on in their lives. The two main characters were two Caucasian males by the names of Derek and Danny. Derek and Danny have different strengths and weaknesses throughout their relationship as brothers. They both clearly care for each other, but they do annoy each other throughout the movie.
Learning American history in class, teaches us the historical event that happened in America during the WWll. My purpose for writing this paper is to explain my family’s History in this country, and the impact they had in America. My family immigrated from Mexico, because Mexico does not provide the opportunity for work, education, and had a weak government. My uncle Jose had a pharmacy in Mexico; however, there was an earthquake that struck Mexico City in 1985. The earthquake killed 10,000 people and left 250,00 homeless. The earthquake also affected my uncle's pharmacy; medicine was falling off the shelves and caused the building to collapse. The president of Mexico did not accept the offer from international aid, furthermore causing the
American History X, directed by Tony Kaye, is one of the most controversial, critically-acclaimed movies of the twentieth century. The film is about a man named Derek who serves three-years in prison for murdering two African-American gang members who broke into his truck. Derek’s younger brother, Danny, tells the story of how Derek became this hateful, racist person through various flashback throughout the story. Danny and Derek’s father was killed by an African-American while fighting a fire. Their father used to tell Derek terrible things about African-Americans and that they do not deserve to be in this country because they are taking away the jobs of hardworking white men. This triggered something in Derek’s mind, which prompted him to become the leader of the “neo-Nazi skinheads”, an all white gang trying to get justice for all the white men who lost their jobs to immigrants. This group was created by a manipulating man named Cameron who convinces vulnerable men to believe in his crazy theories However, after Derek serves time in prison, his perspective changes when he befriends a black man named Lamont and is betrayed and brutally raped by his ‘own kind’. Lamont is a nice, kindhearted person who was serving six years for a crime he half committed. With the help from Lamont and Derek’s old teacher Sweeney, Derek realizes he does not want to live his old lifestyle anymore and only cares about protecting his family. Derek tries to prevent Danny from
At some point in their life nearly every single American has witnessed or been a part of any degree of racism. While most people hide in the shadows while trying to ignore racism and its harmful effects, there are a few people, like Tony Kaye, who are courageous and bold enough challenge the norm and speak out and stand up for those who are in pain. In 1998 Tony Kaye directed American History X, a movie that directly shows the impacts that racism has on everyone, no matter what side of it you are on. Before reading this online review I would expect my adult readers to understand little to nothing about the background information about American History X. Even if the reader were to have a general idea about what takes place in the movie, it
History can change the path of an entire nation, or change an individual family. Every historical event affects the future in some form. Although America as a whole may be affected by certain noteworthy events, a country is made up of individuals. Exploring and focusing in on the effects an individual experiences through historical events is important to understanding the history as a whole.
One of American history’s famous battles involves the diverging of Northern and Southern states. Even when this time period itself is taught, at least from my experience learning it, that divide between Northern and Southern ideology seems even more pronounced. As United States territory expanded, so did hesitations of citizens on both sides—both Northerners and Southerners thought strongholds were put in place to sway governmental opinion, and consequently, actions. In order to bring the nation back together, the Civil War would decide America’s future.
The film American X is entirely based on racism and how community is been incited by it all. The most distressing thing in this film is how the racism is been portrayed. First of all it is true that, generally racism is a subject which is always hard to deal with, however, American History X shows it despite being blunt about the subject without any hesitation. In addition, from the movie it presents how Dereck Vinyard as a racist, who is played by Edward, is falsely portrayed the film.
