For decades, America has fought in many different wars with the need of health assistance for their soldiers. The American Red Cross is a worldwide organization that helped during the times of war but also provided a path for scientific advancements. Through the American Red Cross and other organizations of this time, they opened up the doors for women to take the chance to advance in the medical field by participating in scientific experiments and being at the aide of wounded soldiers. During this time of scrutiny, the Great War was a hidden opportunity for the encroachment of medical research with the contribution to the expansion of nursing.

The Red Cross is a non profit organization that is there to help in times of crisis, or at least it’s supposed to be. For years, they have been the primary resource for salvation and people have never hesitated to donate. They have been present at almost all the disasters in America and thanks to the donations they receive, they’ve been able to help out.

The American Red Cross organizations main focus is recruiting blood donors and volunteers; this is very clear from the first click on their website-a pop up window asking for the reader’s zip code in order to find a donation site near them. The tabs up at the top labeled with large print are inferred to be their most valued ideas. Below each of those tabs is a list of resources related to those individual tabs that help better define their purpose. The American Red Cross website uses the all three of the main types of rhetoric-pathos, ethos, and logos-in a way that benefits their organization and successfully grasps their audience.

This helps to examine the roles, actions, coping methods, and techniques used by a nurse in a disaster scenario.

The public health nurse has many resources available to help assist residents after a natural disaster. The priorities after a disaster such as a flood are for providing services in high-risk areas such as adequate and safe water, basic sanitation facilities, liquid and solid waste disposal, shelter, food protection, and personal hygiene. The public health nurse has access to written literature that can be provided to residents who are safe to remain in their homes, which describe food and water safety as well as hygiene measures. If residents are willing to leave an unsafe living environment, the public health nurse is able to locate shelters for temporary safe housing.

The American Red Cross is a non for profit, congressionally chartered organization. Its primary focus is to give help anywhere that is needed both here and abroad. The American Red Cross uses its resources, time, and money to help five major areas, which are aiding people affected by disasters in American, supporting members in the military and their families, collecting blood for process and distribution, health and safety education and training, and international relief and development (American Red Cross). The Mission Statement of the American Red Cross is “The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors” (American Red Cross).

The American Red Cross is a major organization in the United States and around the world. Clara Barton founded the American chapter in 1881. She was a public servant who decided to get involved during the civil war by attending to wounded soldiers and feeding them on the battlefield. Her sense of humanitarian work was only strengthened by her trip to Europe during the Franco Prussian war, where she discovered the initiative of Henri Dunant (Reitman, 1996). After the battle of Solfinero, this Swiss banker was shocked by the carnage of war and decided to gather doctors and volunteers around the village to help tend to the wounded. This action motivated him to create a nonpartisan organization that can focus on caring for people wounded in wars and conflicts regardless of their origin. (Reitman, 1996). The organization was ratified in the 1864 Geneva Convention by twelve countries and later by many others. The United States Red Cross was founded due to the efforts of Barton in Washington (Reitman, 1996). The first chapter of the national American Red Cross was created in upstate New York. Later, the organization received funding to create its national headquarters in Washington. Since then, the Red Cross has benefited form a close relationship with Washington as it was created by congressional charter more than a century ago and plays a

“A disaster is an event that is a natural or man-made occurrence that can disrupt or destroy the lives of those it affects” (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2014). “Management of a disaster includes four phases; prevention, preparedness, response and recovery” (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2014). To date there have been 154 hospital-based shootings, which resulted in 235 dead or injured. (C.Catlett, 2012). The purpose of this paper is to identify emergency preparedness and response to hospital based shootings, and the role of the public health nurse in such a disaster.

This has been the case since the organization was conceived. American Red Cross was founded on May 21, 1881 by Clara Barton. It received its first congressional charter in 1900 for its services provided to the families of the Armed Forces, and its efforts for the relief for the national disasters that are forced upon the nation. It is the only organization known to help an emergency out every 8 minutes. On average Red Cross responds to 64,000 emergencies annually, and 90% of those being house fires. On average they collect 5.1 million units of blood in a year.

Whenever a disaster strikes an unsuspecting community, from natural weather events like hurricanes and tornadoes to the manmade catastrophes caused by contamination, local community health nurses become a lifeline for stricken victims, providing medical care, basic sanitation, and nutritional sustenance. While treating the ailments of the sick and dressing the wounds of the injured are the chief priorities for any nursing professional, community health nurses typically administer care within a close-knit population group, and this familiarity often requires the offering of spiritual support as well. The immediate aftermath of any major disaster, whether natural or manmade, is a chaotic time when panic, fear, and uncertainty can easily run rampant, and community health nurses must prepare themselves to handle the nonmedical aspects of assisting patients through their recovery. Setting aside one's personal views on organized religion or faith, alleviating a patient's outward symptoms can only be effective to a certain point when they are grieving for the sudden loss of a loved one, or contemplating an uncertain future after their property and

They even started helping victims when it came to sheltering them because their homes were damaged by hurricanes, floods or man-made disasters. During a disaster, nurses should be well equipped to offer a protective and calming atmosphere as a favorable environment is vital for healing psycho spiritual trauma (Meehan, 2012). They should offer their kindness, compassion, and patience as well. Further, the main ways nurses can assist include spending time with patients, reading required scriptures, talking to them, listening attentively, singing religious songs, and conducting prayer sessions (Boschman, 2011).

American Red Cross helps out communities that have been struck with disaster and brings them back to life again. They also accept the gracious blood donations from people who want to donate blood, so other people can use that lifesaving blood. These unbelievable people are not hesitant when they donate, they just do it without thinking twice. This organization does a fantastic job of helping others, because there are plenty of stories told by people firsthand on camera. It truly does show you how amazing your donations and volunteer work means to these people who have been damaged. These people could have died without the help of all the great donors and volunteers to this foundation. This organization should continue because of all of the great things this organization has done specifically when they help out communities who have been struck with disaster out of nowhere, and bring them back to strong, amazing communities. A key idea that I have picked up out of researching this charity is that the American Red Cross foundation does things to benefit others. They do things for a better life for others, and for me, that is why I expect they are one of the best charities out
