As an English teacher at Wellesley High School, in the accomplished community of Wellesley, Massachusetts, David McCullough, Jr. confronts the paradox of reality versus the popular assumptions perpetuated by well-meaning parents and delivered a shockingly poignant attack on the Wellesley High School graduates’ self-perception and preparedness. In addition, he outlined the parents’ role in creating and maintaining this deception. Mr. McCullough used his knowledge and insight of the Twenty-first Century youth culture, humor, and steadfast opinion that his target audience of high school graduates is aphoristically, NOT SPECIAL. However, Mr. McCullough limited his audience’s sensitivity to his assertion using ethics, logic and pathos and later provides a positive, passionate and humanistic world view of how to have a well-lived life.
Mr. McCullough begins his speech by recognizing his audience and the privilege of being selected as the graduation speaker stating, “Dr. Wong, Dr. Keough, Mrs. Novogroski, Ms. Curran, members of the board of education, family and friends of the graduates, ladies and gentlemen of the Wellesley High School class of 2012”. Acknowledging the audience by name or position, Mr. McCullough is able to set the audience at ease. This is a nod to them being part of the same community. Many young adults are pressured into attending college, whether they have determined their goal or not, but is it necessary? “The Case Against College,” an article written by Linda Lee, a mother who has questioned the former belief that college equals success, claims that “not everyone needs a higher education.” College, though beneficial to many, is not for everyone and should not determine an individual’s life.

Matt Lamkin’s “A Ban On Brain-Boosting Drugs is Not the Answer” first appeared in Chronicle of Higher Education in 2011. In this essay Lamkin aims to convince his reader not to deter improper conduct with threats, but to encourage students to engage in the practice of education. Lamkin tells us “If colleges believe that enhancing cognition with drugs deprives students of the true value of education, they must encourage students to adapt that value as their own” (642). Appeal to logic, consistency, and compare/contrast are techniques Lamkin skillfully uses to create a strong effective essay.
For Hillsborough Community College to attract the most students and achieve higher retention rates, Differentiated Marketing would be the best practice. Because Hillsborough Community College is predominantly diverse, target marketing groups should include dual-enrolled students, recent high-school graduates, young adults, and career-oriented adults seeking higher education. A smaller marketing group to consider is the mature adult over the age of 60 who are seeking recreational classes. Promotional messages should be developed to target each group in order to increase attraction and retention in each group category. The main marketing focus of HCC has been on the high school market, and not in actively recruiting the adult market (Clarus 16). Though the high school market may always display a greater percentage of students attending HCC, other marketing groups may show an improved interest if promotional messages are targeted to each group, thus increasing overall attendance.

According to the three research studies that I utilized, there are several varied assessment approaches for teaching ELLs in reading (Davis-Lenski, Ehlers-Zavala, Daniel, & Sun-Irminger, 2006; Dreher, & Letcher-Gray, 2009; Ebe, 2010). In English 950/1101-350 one will join in collaborative exercises with their classmates and guided research. Students will use the Norton Field Guide and adventure their ways through CNM’s Library Database’s. Students will receive, ancillary readings, grammar handouts, and model essays from past students. While students will spend most of their time in a classroom, they will also have a chance to go to a computer lab and do research for their essays. Students will receive an assignment one week in advance and is due the following week on Wednesday but the instructor, Sue Fox, will accept it Thursday that week without any grade penalty. After the assignment is graded and handed back, revisions are allowed, students have one week from the point it is handed back, to fix and turn it in for a better grade. By the end of the term students will have written eight essays, the essay genres students will write are; a diagnostic essay, a literacy narrative, a textual analysis, an informative report, an argumentative essay, a proposal, a memoir or reflective essay, and an evaluation essay for the final. Students will be given three chances to earn extra credit as well; students can present their textual analysis to the class for ten points extra credit, one can also receive extra credit if the whole class participates in the course evaluation, and the student will have a chance to earn up
The mass majority of individuals past the age of thirty seem to trivialize problems that a plethora of American youth suffer from today. Simply put, the French author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry describes it best in his book, The Little Prince, in the quote, “All grown-ups were once children…but only few of them remember it.” We are inordinately exhausted from classes and extracurricular activities that promise college appeal, we are emotionally inept from the expectations of our family’s and peers, and we are despondent from the inability to caste away anxiety filled doubt at a future that seems implausible. My greatest contribution to my school and my community is my dedication to establish compassion and comfort for an improved quality of life. The known establishment of my human gifts to my region came about from my own experiences that caused a realization that various students in my community feel outcasted by our society. By creating a persona that promotes nondiscriminatory listening while also creating three clubs that perform as a safe space, I believe my greatest attribute to my small town of Forest City will endure the hardships of time.
Since the dawn of the comprehensive American high school, debate has raged over the most effective way to structure or schedule the school year. The schedule of a school can have a major impact on a wide range of areas including student choice and academic performance. When considering this, it is somewhat unusual that the majority of today 's modern American high schools adhere to a semester schedule that dates back to the early 19th century. Some experts believe the school calendar came about as a result of our agricultural past, when youth were required to work on family farms and attend school as well. The agrarian calendar1 consisted of a short winter term and a short summer term, resulting in two distinct breaks from school when kids living in rural, agricultural areas were needed for the harvest, which helps to explain the origins of the semester system. For the past two centuries the American school system has continued to follow this model and many educators continue to believe in it 's value. However, these vestigial connections that continue to link modern schools to this archaic structure no longer hold the merit they once did. Students attending school now, in the 21st century, have different needs and expectations placed upon them. While owners of industry in the early 1800 's needed a cooperative, obedient workforce; business owners of today require technologically savvy individuals who are not afraid to innovate and push the envelope. Yet, the education does not stop at middle school, for high school really puts all the basic skills from elementary and middle school to work as the assignments and the exams become more challenging. We do not only learn about reading, writing, history, and math, we learn about the people around us as we associate with different personalities, and as we see what we have grown up to be and what we want to be later in life. Accordingly, the high school years are a time when teachers emphasize the importance of graduating and attending college in order to have a “succesful future.”
