Essay #6 Vietnam During the research for our sixth essay about Vietnam, I was surprised by how much I learned by looking at just one website. The Vietnam war took place between 1954 and 1975. This war caused many changes regarding the American wars to come. There were many different people and weapons used to fight this war. I found most of my information in the Guerrilla section of the given website. The people involved in this war ranged from teen boys who were uneducated to very educated leaders. They had many things that were homemade including booby traps and mines. These were made from leftover pieces of American explosives that were dropped. The village people would risk their lives to retrieve these materials. Some of these dangerous things were made from materials as simple as a tin can or discarded wire. They made different things, but I found the spikes called Punji Traps the most interesting. They were sometimes hidden in bushes and some were contaminated so when the enemy got hit, there was a higher risk of infection. In 1956 the guerilla’s fighting tactics changed. They started only fighting battles that they knew they could win. They recruited many more people into their team and started more little fights and ambushes. They started creating safe bases territories, which they got the idea from the Chinese Guerillas who were before them. Since there were so many aircrafts around, they had to be sure that their safe areas were hidden. Many of their safe areas became underground tunnels that were enormous in size and very complex in design. During the process of building the tunnels, they had to dig at least three feet per person a day. The

The war started as a conflict between the Republic of Vietnam, South Vietnam, and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, North Vietnam (Cosmas, 329). The war began in 1957 and ended in the spring of 1975, lasting a total of 18 years (Cosmas, 329). Although the North Vietnamese lost the most people in the Vietnam War, they still won. North Vietnam did have some advantages in weaponry, the M-30 and the RPG-7, but the real reason they won was because of their overpowering desire to win.
In the middle 1960s, every male in America had to register for Selective Service Draft at age 18. He would then be eligible for the draft and could be inducted into the Army for a period of two years. If you were a college student, you could receive a deferment and would be able to finish college without the fear of being drafted. However, once finished with college, a students name would be put to the very top of the draft list and could be deployed at anytime. The anti-war movement was about young men being drafted and then sent into war that most Americans did not believe threatened the security of the US. The Vietnam War was America’s rebellious war, a war without popular support

The Vietnam war, also called the Indochina War , may be said to have started in 1957 when Communist-led rebels began mounting terrorists attacks against the government of the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). The rebel forces, commonly called the Vietcong, were later aided by troops of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam). American combat personnel were formally committed to the defense of the South in 1965. An agreement calling for a ceasefire was signed in January 1973, and by March the few remaining U.S. millitary personnel in Vietnam were withdrawn. However, the war between the two Vietnamese sides persisted inconclusively for two additional years before South Vietnamese resistance

These topics have a lot of information about them, but there is too much to write about every little detail, so I will cover the broad overview of them.
