This story “An Outpost of Progress” by Joseph Conrad, takes place in Central Africa, in the middle of nowhere, there is an outpost of progress. Henry Price is the man in charge of the trading station. The local tribe gave him the name of Makola. He spoke English and French, has beautiful handwriting, and understood bookkeeping. He has one flaw, he worships the evil spirits. There are two other men in this story, Kayerts and Carlier. Makola despises them because of their stupidity and cluelessness. Makola causes the downfall of the Outpost. Makola causes an ultimate problem as he takes part in a slave trade. When Makola made this trade he knew that Kayerts and Carlier would get mad and wouldn't talk to him. This resulted in no work getting done and the outpost would come crumbling down. Makola’s actions lead to the illness and death of workers at the Outpost. The leader of the neighboring tribe, Gobila, found out about the trade Makola made, he was enraged. “No one from Gobila’s village came near the station that day. No one came the next, and the next, nor for the whole week” (92). Those men that would go to the station would bring food. When the men stop, the Outpost is left with no food. This affects the Outpost because food was no longer supplied to them and workers started to get sick. Makola knew that this would happen and that the workers at the Outpost would start to get sick and not work as well. As a result of all the workers getting sick, no work was getting done. Makola saw Kayerts and Carlier get sick, he felt a smirk on his face. Kayerts and Carlier are getting really sick and were caused to have a senseless conversation over coffee. “Hang it all! Let’s have a decent cup of coffee for once. Bring out that sugar, Kayerts!”(95). There would only be sugar in one's coffee if they are sick. Carlier wanted sugar in his coffee with the statement that he was sick. Kayerts was not going to let Carlier win this fight. The result of this fight was the death of both Kayerts and Carlier.
