In the Upside Down the Demogorgon, attacks humans and wreaks havoc on the city. At the same time, the boys are playing D&D and Mike presents a Demogorgon against Will. Cinematography and foley sounds exploit the dangers of the Demogorgon and foreshadow Will’s fate. An abrupt zoom on the monster contrasts to the other shots to intensify the danger the demogorgon presents (Figure 1). At the same time, an over exaggerated “boom” sound is used when Will puts the character on the table to create a threatening presence. The low key lighting from artificial lamps introduces a suspenseful twist into the idea of children playing a game. In order to fight the Demogorgon, Will casted a “fireball” spell, but only rolled a seven meaning he was defeated by the Demogorgon. This is direct foreshadowing and paralleling when Will later fights back against the demogorgon, but loses. Additionally, the way the camera follows and focuses on D&D while the boys are playing represents the importance of the game in the …show more content…
In order to incite suspenseful feelings and include elements of Sci-Fi, cinematography and sound design were used. The fact that there isn’t sound or dialogue in the sequence and that the monster is never shown greatly increases the scene’s suspense. Sound design was utilized to create suspense because the monster is solely heard with over exaggerated growling. Cinematography created suspense by using shots that have low key lighting from eye level angle, and sometimes dramatic high angles, tilting the camera for an upside down POV (Figure 3a). Since the scientist can see what’s chasing him, but we can’t a mysterious suspense of the unknown is created. The directors and cinematographers intended to make shots suspenseful by focusing solely on distinct parts of the scientist’s body, such as his face (Figure 3a), and then pulling into a long shot to show his lower torso being lifted up (Figure 3b). Immediately after that long, suspenseful sequence, the sequence transitions to a serene, rural neighborhood sprinkler. This demonstrates a purposeful discontinuity, in true thriller fashion, with many fluctuations in

This aids in the naturalistic phenomenon that is easily consumable for the viewer. The long flowing lines in the waterfall give rise to the illusion of movement and as the viewer’s gaze drops, the movement appears to become stagnant and calm in the body of water. There is careful contouring and chiaroscuro on the mountains allowing for the viewer to become inundated with its immensity.
They boys knew that they were going to have to hide the metal ball or else it was going to get taken away, which means that they are growing and becoming more aware of how unfair the world is.
The building of apprehension in viewers’ mind helps put them in the character’s shoes and truly captures their attention. In the “Pilot” episode of the television series Stranger Things, the writers create suspense by applying the two main elements of media: music and setting. The element of music is creatively used to establish the mystery present in the show. For instance, when Will is on his way to his house the audience does not fully see the slithering horror he encounters. Instead, an appalling, liquid chittering is heard from the deep woods (Brothers, 2016).The choice of sounds that the writers use helps trigger the audience's mind and keeps the viewer curious about what will happen to Will Byers, and who the noise is coming from. In 1928 ground-breaking technology made it possible for movies to have sound. This revolutionized horror films because sound gave an extra dimension to terror. Noise built suspense and signaled the presence of a threat. (Wilson) Instead of a monster suddenly making an appearance without warning, music would signal that they were near. Growls, Snarls, footsteps, and screams allowed the audience members to feel like the victims of the movie.
It is extraordinary how a genre of a movie, book or show can impact the mood. In the first episode of “Stranger Things”, the depiction of the supernatural, impacts the mood using symbolism, sound design, setting and characterization. The director focuses on specific scenes and intensifies supernatural sounds to portray that this object or setting is extraterrestrial. “What are you, deaf? I’ve been calling you.” (33:45 - 33:56). The shed is portrayed as haunted and is the last scene the audience sees Will Byers. The lightbulb within the shed has a supernatural meaning and is shown for a longer period of time with both the Chief and Will along with dog barking and other loud horror sound effect which help develop a bone-chilling and mysterious

The Stranger by Albert Camus follows the story of a man named Meursault, who received notice that his mother had passed away. Meursault was not emotionally connected to his mother, and his reaction is not what the reader would expect, as he did not seem to care at all. Therefore, the day after attending his mother’s funeral, Meursault goes to the beach and meets up with his girlfriend, Marie. After the beach, Meursault and Marie go to a movie and spend the night together. When he returns home from work the next day, Meursault runs into his neighbor, Raymond, who beats his mistress. Later in the story, Meursault, Marie, and Raymond go to a beach house, which is owned by Raymond’s friend, Masson. At the beach, Masson, Raymond, and Meursault
Another aspect of sound in this film was how it affected the story. By using sound dramatically in certain parts and not using it at all in other parts, sound gave this story an entity of its own. For example, during long stretches of film with mostly dialogue, there was no music played in the background, only a phone ringing in the distance, or the men's voices during their deliberation. These long silences also took place during editing shots of the town and images that surrounded this German city. This dramatic difference in sound was a revelation of how mood can be made by images and sound put together to make an incredible component.
Horror films are known for their ability to scare audiences, to get the audience’s hearts racing, their blood rushing. A good horror film will cause viewers to be on the edge of their seats and having their perception of reality distorted as they attempt to understand the unraveling plot of the horror film. The tone of the film aides in the amount of suspense that a horror film produces, since a much darker film will create a more suspenseful atmosphere than one that is more focused on campy monster makeup. But the tone of a film is determined by the sound of the film, or in other words, the score. Sound or music in a horror film, or the lack thereof, make the intense scenes and without the addition
