From John Lewis to Martin Luther King we can only thank these people for stepping out of the social and cultural norm to create change with the inspirations of religion. Even with the flaws in the church today, it still will never be the same because of the actions of these men and women who decided to let religion motivate them to act. This is a piece of history that will forever affect us and hopefully inspire us to stand up for what we believe in no matter what the opposition.
The ideals of Christianity founded many of the principles that John followed and believed in from a young age. He describes at the age of five reading a bible that his uncle gave to him and a verse striking him deeply even without the comprehension “Behold the

First we got Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who is a preacher and one of the biggest vocal influences in the movement. Without his voice (which was a big deal when no one would speak out) the African Americans of this time may not have had the morale to keep fighting on. Then we got people like Rosa Parks who is a believer and during her famous choice to sit at the front of the bus she said “I instantly felt God give me the strength to endure whatever would happen next. God's peace flooded my soul, and my fear melted away. All people were equal in the eyes of God, and I was going to live like the free person God created me to be.” (christianity.com). and I know that these are just famous ones. But we got groups that stood up for rights like SNCC which was as Christian group, and a huge impact on the movement.
The church now a day has changed drastically from how churches functioned then. I would say there has been a big change in speech. The church has seemed to focus mainly on personal problems such as Depression, Mental Illnesses, and addiction. Which Is still very important to our current world. But some social issues it has strayed away from that are serious problems. Such as gender orientation and identity. This is a complex issue but even if Christianity disagrees it must be shown more love and caring too. Because it seems that most people in this category has strayed from the church
Probably the most re-known civil rights movement was the struggle for former slaves to attain freedom. Among these slaves was one who not only freed herself, but also freed a numerous amount of other slaves that she encountered. This woman is known to us all as Harriet Tubman, but was known by the slaves as a “saint” who helped them get their freedom. As said by Richard in Black Boy, “My life as a Negro in America had led me to feel...that the problem of humanity was more important than bread, more important than physical living itself; for I felt that without a common
There were many people throughout the history of the United States that helped to get equality for African Americans; however, one man's voice moved an entire race. That one man is Martin Luther King, Jr. He has a way of making you listen when he speaks and of making you understand his ideas. Many people did listen and he motivated a whole race of people to strive with him on his quest for equality. The events in his life from early life, civil rights, and later life led him to be one of the most powerful people in the movement towards civil rights.
The civil rights movement can be called one of the most important movements in the history of the country. Without it who knows where America would be as a country in today’s time. Fortunately it was not a problem America had to solve all by its self. With the help of two of the most influential people in history, America became the country of the free where everyone is equal, no matter what religion, gender or ethnicity. Those two men were Martin Luther King Jr. and Elijah Muhammad. These men have accomplished so much but some can argue that one did things a better way than the other. Most of the time people are more for the non-violent Martin Luther King Jr. but some say that without a little force, nothing can be accomplished. This was the
Not all children are born into the perfect situation, some children are born into a drug oriented and gang related family. “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.” This a powerful quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. how we can benefit a student’s life. The Giving Children a Mulligan in Life interest group would be a locally funded group in Atlanta which would teach life lessons through the game of golf in a fun and interactive way. “Giving Children a Mulligan in Life” would help with the record high levels of dropouts in this city. Certainly with Atlanta having one of the highest dropout rates in not just Georgia, but in United States at 59.1% with an 8% rise in the last two years reported by the Georgia’s Department of Education (2014) is more than enough of a reason for this group to exist.
The only way for transformation and ultimate character reformation is to go through Hell. On the other side of being tested to your limits, the potential for the man or woman you could be shines through and becomes who you are. John Lewis was a man that went through things everyday people would think are unimaginable in order to transform into who he is. There were no comfort zones for this man, and he came out the other side so much better for it. John Lewis had many influential events throughout his life that made him want to make a change; the ones that stand out the most are listening to Martin Luther King’s speech over the radio, his trip to Buffalo with his uncle, and his first arrest.
Malcolm X. These people also made huge impacts in the world but none of this would have happened without the

He led many campaigns throughout much of the 1960’s which began to slowly gain results. One of the major things MLK and his followers were campaigning for was a civil rights bill to be passed. Many walks, rallies, and protests were held in order to get then president, John F. Kennedy, to propose the bill and have it pass. In the year of 1963 in Birmingham, Alabama the climax of the civil rights campaign was reached, forcing JFK to commit to proposing a civil rights bill. However, because of how big and radical this campaign was, MLK was arrested and made to spend the night in a Birmingham jail. There he wrote a letter in response to an advertisement from white clergy asking him to shut down the campaign. In the letter, MLK explains why African Americans were campaigning for this and that they wouldn’t stop until they achieved what they had been working so diligently for (13). As a result of the campaign in Birmingham and the letter MLK had written, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed. The act banned public and private discrimination against African Americans and any other racial, ethnic or minority group. It also banned excluding someone from a job or a public

Take a look around the modern church, and a major demographic is missing. Leadership positions in the church are extremely male dominated. Women have long been a discussion point for the world wide church. As cultural opinions have become more liberal, the Christian community begins to follow suit. However, there are still many churches that hold to their original beliefs. A shift in rules for the church is something to stir questions. If Christians preach only biblical truth, then how can their ideals change? The Bible has not changed at all over time, but has the church changed? There are many ways to answer this question. Perhaps the most significant area of change is in leadership roles.
