Would you rather betray your dear friend or betray a “country” that has shaped your lifestyle through its culture and traditions? It is a very hard decision to make, but a famous writer once said that if the time came when he had to make a choice, he hoped to have the courage to betray his country rather than his friend. I agree with this opinion because of both my life experiences and evidence throughout the text “Sin” by Agnes Repplier. In the story Agnes, the main character, betrayed her country which in context was her mother, her religion, and Madam Bouron in order to keep her friend safe. The reasons I believe that betraying a country over a friend is better is the fact that it proves true loyalness to the friend and demonstrates the betrayer’s desire to protect the friend’s feelings over anything else in life.
The first reason why betraying a friend over a country is beneficial is the act of proving true loyalness to that particular friend. In the story, Agnes showed true loyalness by betraying Madame Bouron in order to show how dedicated she was to her friend over her mother and the church. An example proving this is when Madame Rayburn said, “You have borne false witness against your neighbor”. This quote proves that Agnes did betray her friend by lying to her which she did with acknowledgement of the consequences which include committing a sin of lying to Lily and betraying Madam Bouron which was against her religion. Despite this, she did in fact remain loyal and this is shown when Madam Bouron says, “You have been false to your mother … but you have been true to your friend”. So even though Agnes did was false to her country which in the context of the quote was her mother, she remained faithful and devoted to keeping her friend in safe comfort. Similar to Agnes, I have made choices where I lied to my parents but it was only to protect my dear friend from having his feelings hurt and his reputation diminished. Therefore, one of the reasons that justify the action of betraying oneś country over a friend is to openly show how trustworthy and passionate one is about their friend.
In addition, protecting a friend's feelings and emotions makes lying to a country worth it. Specifically in the text,
Catholicism: A Very Short Introduction written by Gerald O’Collins is a short read that gives an insight to the Catholic church without getting confusing to the reader. It touches on the basics of Catholicism such as the history, practices, and core beliefs. Through each chapter Gerald O’Collins a research professor in the field of Theology at St. Mary’s University College and Twickenham, as well as formally Dean in Gregorian University for the faculty of Theology, shares his knowledge on the Catholic religion one question at a time.
Masaccio’s famous religious painting, “The Holy Trinity”, is known for the engagement of linear perspective to create an image that goes beyond just paint on canvas, (or should I say wall?) by creating the illusion of depth. This painting addresses many religious concepts by setting up different levels and layers in the constructed space. The characters depicted are made up of four groups of human figures, which include the Trinity (God the father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit), the Virgin Mary and Saint John, a pair of donors, and a skeleton on a tomb at the bottom of the picture. There is an apparent point of separation, which is made clear due to each group being on separate levels. Their difference in power is fundamental feature in
The short short stories “A Retrieved Reformation” and “After Twenty Years” written by O.Henry has a theme of loyalty. Loyalty is staying true and being willing to sacrifice your own self interests for the sake of whoever, or whatever you are loyal to. Most of O.Henry’s characters display loyalty, making it easy to see the common theme amongst his stories.
We as human beings all have choices. Many of the choices we make can affect us for the rest of our lives. Among the more important decisions a person will ever have to face is that of betrayal. Often times we are in a situation in which we must chose sides: “Whom to betray?”, and in this case, the options are friend or country. I agree with E. M. Forster’s view on personal relations and patriotism, believing that “I hope I should have the guts to betray my country” (Forster) over my friend. A person should always – and one might even say has a duty to – place his conscience or the moral laws he has set for himself over any conflicting manmade law.
One way loyalty can be shown is through a person’s honesty. Odysseus shows honesty towards his crew members after Greek goddess, Circe warns him about the obstacles he and his crew will have to face on his journey back home. “Odysseus / decides to tell the
Sheed states on page 10 that “In theology, spirit is not only a key word, it is the key word.” Spirt is the thing we know and love and then we end up deciding at the end. So basically, our spirit is everything. It “loves” God and “knows” it loves God.
Loyalty is a concept, which can be seen in many point of views. Some people relate loyalty to love, friendships and family. Loyalty isn’t just loving someone, being kind and helpful, it’s being devoted to someone, when times get hard, appreciating them for what they’ve done for you, putting them before you; and no matter what you will always be there for them even at the hardest of times. For some people being loyal is harder at the hard times, some people let inhumanity take over man itself or people betray and sometimes for many different reasons like rumors going around school but sometimes for reasons you feel at first to be a good reason but in the end you just feel guilty like in the novel Night by Elie Wiesel; like the son of the Rabbi
Not everyone possesses the quality of loyalty, but those that do are worth having a relationship with. The author of Cue for Treason, Geoffry Trease, demonstrates this trait in many of the characters. The most loyal bond in this book, which took place very early on in the novel, was Peter and Kit’s. One of the most significant bonds has to be amongst the Secret Agents, the Queen, and all of England. Lastly, the most heroic form of loyalty is portrayed by Tom Boyd, Peter, and Kit. Each one of these characters do not betray each other once. So, several characters in the novel show loyalty to one another throughout.
In our society today, loyalty is a trait that is valued by many, despite its relative weakness compared to betrayal. This is because many will remember the times when they were betrayed, yet will only remember a handful of times
Loyalty is perhaps the most important characteristic a person can possess. Loyalty is defined by Google as “giving or showing firm and constant support or allegiance to a person or institution.” In the books Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by Stone , this definition is exploited both in a positive and negative way. In Romeo and Juliet loyalty is a characteristic that both characters acquire along their journey and it has an ennobling effect on them. While in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight , Sir Gawain is displayed as being a loyal man, but then he becomes perfidious because of his selfish way and it cost him his respect and nobleness.
Sophecles's play Antigone shows that loyalty can be a horrible thing. Loyalty to one person does not always end up in a good way, Antigone's loyalty to her brother, Haimon's loyalty to Antigone, and the peoples' loyalty to Creon are all examples of how loyalty can go wrong. There is one thing to learn from Antigone, be careful who you are loyal
Loyalty to another person or to a cause may be an admirable trait, but it
In the book “House of the Red Fish”, one of the recurring themes is loyalty. For example,
Throughout William Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar and Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, loyalty is strongly presented as a major motif. In both texts, loyalty is highly valued as one of the most important traits to a person’s character. Not only do the loyal characters receive better fates, but those who are not loyal are punished for the actions, usually through revenge. In Julius Caesar, the characters that remained loyal to Caesar are the few who wind up alive at the end of the play, and in The Odyssey, those who remained loyal to Odysseus were rewarded by Odysseus, and those who weren’t were killed.
Loyalty is being faithful to commitments and obligations. On the other hand there are many ways to display loyalty. One can be loyal to a person, political party, country, religion, or cause. The list is seemingly endless. William Shakespeare’s play King Lear exhibits many forms of loyalty, but one that shines particularly is loyalty to ones selfish needs. However there is a limit to loyalty which most over look. The characters Cordelia, the emotional King Lear, and the vile Edmund all manifest their loyalty to their own self, and all meet their demise. The limit to loyalty is death.
