Analysis Of Star Wars : A New Hope

In the movie “Star Wars Episode Four: A New Hope”, the film George Lucas uses the archetypes the hero, the mentor, and the tyrant to convey the theme that we as humans grow and change as people because of possible people or events that occur throughout our lives. How this is shown is throughout the movie and through the main stars of the film that are well know as Luke Skywalker and Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. In the film we see important events that perceive the change in the characters.

Star Wars IV A New Hope is a science fantasy film written and directed by George Lucas. Fictional characters help us understand ourselves. Star Wars IV A New Hope teaches us about life and ourselves in many ways such as death,loss,pain and courage are experiences that we will go through during our lives.

Episode IV was set during a time of war between the Rebellion, the good side, and the Empire, which is considered the evil side. The science fiction story is about a young man, Luke Skywalker, who travels into space to fight against the Empire. Luke is from the planet Tatooine, a desert, where he farms water with his uncle. Luke’s uncle buys two droids, R2D2 and C3PO, who happen to have been involved in the war and worked for the rebellion. Luke discovers a recording in one of the droids of Princess Leia saying she needed help, and that sparks the beginning of his journey. He meets Ben, also known as Obi-Wan Kenobi, who becomes his mentor, and teaches him how to use “the force”. In Star Wars, “the force” is a magical way for people to control things using their unconscious minds. Luke sets out on a journey into space to rescue the princess and join the Rebellion in the war effort. Luke and Obi-Wan meet Han solo, a pilot, and ask him to take them into space. They plan to go to Alderaan, Princess Leia’s home planet; however, they are unintentionally sucked into the Death Star, the spacecraft and weapon of the Empire. They find out that Princess Leia is being held in the Death Star, and they plan to help her escape. While Han and Luke try to help Leia, Obi-Wan is fighting Darth Vader, the evil leader of the Empire. Unfortunately, Obi-Wan is killed by Darth Vader; although, Luke, Han and Leia escape the Death Star. They go to a Rebellion headquarter and find the weak spot of the Death Star.

This quote is perhaps the most famous of the character’s, and perhaps one of the most famous in the whole franchise. It highlights an idea that the scene perpetuates: the fact you intend to do something doesn’t matter, only whether or not it is done. This is not a perfect metaphor for the application of knowledge, but it fits in rather easily. Without an effect, an application, all you have is abstract knowledge – that trying that Yoda denies – and in that way value has been diminished. The action filled scenes of the movie proves to be most prominent of the time, using CGI to their fullest ability. CGI allows the movie choreographer to enhance movie scenes, boosting the overall reality and intensity. The final duel between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan shows off the great use of special effects, including a hellish planet theme for the audience. The performance shows off high quality light saber fights, breaking down facilities over a river of lava, over a river of lava and falling objects from all over leading into a great lava fall. The movie expands over a variety of worlds such as the breathtaking city of Coruscant, the green natural world of the Wookies, the hell world of Mustafar and many more. The Death Star battle, or Battle of Yavin, is a climatic scene where the (first) Death Star, a giant moon shaped space station and weapon with abilities to destroy planets with its super laser, is destroyed by the Rebellion. George Lucas was a very credible director because he was influenced by the small town he grew up in Modesto. According to The Secret History of Star Wars, “Lucas’ father felt that George never quite measured up to his ideals of what a good son should be.” (Kiminski 9) Lucas seems to be comparing himself to the main character in Star Wars: A New Hope, Luke Skywalker. Both Luke and Lucas grew up in small towns, didn’t have a strong relationship with their father (or in Luke’s case, didn’t know their father), and they both thought they would never leave the small town they resided in.

They would each trade 2.5 percent of their movies earnings to each other. Then Spielberg agreed to the bet but actually Star Wars made $775 million at the box office and close encounters only making $304 million. Though Lucas did not lose much money since after the movie he was still a billionaire so there was not a giant hole in his wallet after the bet which surprised Lucas. He was very surprised that Star Wars got almost double the earning of close encounters and now had so much money.

He races home to find his family dead and nothing left but becoming a jedi (A New Hope Scene-by-scene. Web. 2010). In an effort to get to the Princesses planet they go to the Cantina, a bar filled with scam artist, where the find Han Solo and his co-pilot Chewbacca. Once they’ve settled on a payment their journey begins. What Obi-Wan and Luke don’t know is that in an effort to get Leia to talk Darth threatens and then follow through with blowing up her home planet.(Web. SparkNotes.com. Obi-Wan encounters and allows Darth to defeat him, meanwhile Leia is rescued by Han, Luke, and the others. Without Obi-Wan but the rescue of the Princess the only thing left to do is defeat Darth’s ship, the Death Star. Against all odds and the discovery of the force Luke blows it up and is later awarded for heroic nature, as is Han and Chewbacca, ending the first of the epic series.
