In “Are Too Many People Going To College?” Charles Murray puts forth the question that seems to be a hot topic of controversy. Should all students automatically plan to go to college? Murray established that the common mind set of getting a liberal education is an awesome thing but this education should be based more in the lower K-8 grades or even in high school. Murray purposes that not all students are geared to be successful in college and demonstrates that obtaining a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) is not always a direct ticket to success as many believe it to be. I agree that our society is inaccurately treating the acquisition of a B.A. as a requirement to be successful and anyone who chooses to seek an other than college path is treated as substandard.

College is foretold to be the wisest choice a student can make to better their future with a successful, high-paying job. Yet Charles Murray, author of the article “Too Many People Are Going To College,” introduces a controversial side to the argument, believing that the decision for students to attend college is one of great importance, but the choice may be made too soon. Murray emphasizes the reasons why this situation exists and continues to be proven true in today’s society with factors such as the misleading statements to students about college and the high academic standards students must conform to.

In his Essay “Are too many people going to college,” first published in a 2008 issue of AEI, Charles Murray explores many insights onto the topic of furthering education as well as exploring various other options to pursue after high school. Who exactly would think that too many people are going to college? Well with more and more students flooding campuses at the end of every school year and less and less going into trade schools, a shift in the job market is just beginning to be seen on the horizon. Charles Murray’s essay “Are too many people going to college” shows that not only are there other avenues to pursue a potential life long career, but that much of the time pursuing these avenues may offer better results for some wanting to go to college.

From a young age, most kids have been brainwashed to believe that college is the only path to success in life. Is it? Is college the right choice for everyone? Or are there better alternatives? These are questions that have been asked many different times but it seems like there has been a lack of a clear-cut answer. There are many different things to consider when looking at colleges as the only path to success.

Also, if one attends college, he or she will learn continuous, practical information for life. People who have participated in college and have graduated having accomplished more now than they had ever imagined probable for them. College also teaches people to strengthen their minds, enhance thinking skills as well as improve individual comprehension throughout life. Some say the only meager men are those, who lack intelligence. If one has the opportunity to improve his or her standard of living, and provide a better quality of life for his or her family as well, then why would he or she neglect to accept the opportunity offered? Great opportunities due to a great education arouse daily so one needs to be aware of the lifelong consequences disregarding the attendance in college provides.

One must consider their choice of major, cost of school, where they are attending school, and a variety of other factors. Depending on the situation college may not be a smart investment (Owen and Sawhill 209). I agree with this notion that some people are not meant for college, but we as a society still push the idea of college which creates conflicting thoughts in the mind of a student. When discussing the benefits of attending college the biggest supporting reason revolves around further expanding one’s knowledge in order to earn a higher income. They use ethos in their appeals but they fail to provide evidence of this. They may show numbers that are skewed showing the difference in salary of a high school graduate and a college graduate but they don’t show the majors that earning that high income. They don’t show the number of college graduates without a job and how much debt they are in. Colleges and Universities are windows of knowledge that many people try to break, in doing so, people are ready for the next stage of their life. But not many have the option to go the world where knowledge is everything, and end being a simple worker all his life. People would judge a person for not having a degree, bachelor and many more. But do they ever think that colleges or universities are really preparing you for any jobs, does a piece of paper worth a lot now a days. Freeman Hrabowski wrote an article responding to people that think educations is a waste of time, and it is called “College Prepare People for life” (Hrabowski). In the article he mentions many positive thing about going to college and what is the outcome of going to college. But I believe that, he hasn’t done a very good job to explain why college is a good place to go prepare yourself for the real world. I believe that college is very important for our life, but not many of us know if we are really learning something while being in college. I feel like colleges or universities has become a place where we go just to go or try to earn a degree in any field. Therefore, I believe that colleges doesn’t enhance our basic skills, doesn’t give us a certainty of us getting a good job, doesn’t give us the hardships of the real world and it isn’t a place where everyone gets treated it equally.

For a long time, I believed that the only reason anyone would choose not to was because they were academically or financially incapable. What do colleges provide for their students other than an increased education? Matthew Crawford, in an article written for New York Times Magazine, elaborates on what is the point of college: “If the goal is to earn a living, then, maybe it isn’t really true that 18-year-olds need to be imparted with a sense of panic about getting into college.” (Source A). This indicates that college does not help one find a career but rather does potentially only increase their education. Matthew also touches on the fact that we go through school, then to college, then rushed into a job. When does one get to go out in the real world and receive knowledge from experience? A survey of people who are eighteen years and older in source F provides us with the quantitative fact that: “For a young person to succeed in the world, 61% say a good work ethic is extremely important and 57% say the same about knowing how to get along with people. Just 42% say the same about a college education.” This knowledge is presented from people who have lived and have gone through real life experiences. It touches on the fact that a college education can’t teach us everything we need to learn in life, but that we have to live and learn ourselves.

The author mentions how students who attend college end up making more money than anyone. They make about 60%-70% more than anyone with and without a high school diploma. Drew Faust suggests that college graduates often live a longer life and be successful. For example, be more active and own a home once they are done with their studies. In addition, he remarks on how students’ lives change in perspective and explore, meaning, they will learn different places, languages, and their way thinking.
