The main protagonist in, The Kite Runner, Amir, goes through a drastic change of character from adolescence to adulthood. The story of The Kite Runner takes place in the 1970s, and goes on to the early 2000s. Amir’s life starts in the capital of Afghanistan, Kabul. Where much of his childhood revolves around the actions of his father Baba, and his friend Hassan. He later moves to the U.S. seeking a better life, and also to try and escape the immoral acts he had committed in Kabul. The latter of the story is set in the US. Throughout the novel we can see the growth of Amir from being a pampered, envious, and cowardice child, to being a man of empathy and love with a burning desire to do right, to such a degree that he would fly back to a now violence ridden world, in order to make things right.
In the first parts of the story Amir is presented to us as a pampered child. Amir is shown as a pampered child considering he is born into a rich family. His father Baba, is a very wealthy businessman. Amir has access to virtually anything he wants, be it a grand house, education, in short Amir is materially wealthy. “Everyone agreed that my father, my Baba, had built the most beautiful house in the Wazir Akbar Khan district, a new and affluent neighborhood in the northern part of Kabul.” (Two, 5) The ability to build a beautiful house in such a rich neighborhood is only possible through wealth.
