Analysis Of The Liberal Learning Objectives

In recent discussion of the purpose of a liberal arts education, a controversial issue has been whether it is “just filling you up with knowledge”. On one hand, some argue that it is just a good prerequisite to have. From this perspective, the point of earning a degree is to get a better career. On the other hand, however, others argue that a degree “has actual human value”. In the words of David Foster Wallace, one of this view’s main proponents, “a liberal arts education is not so much filling you up with knowledge as it is about ‘teaching you how to think’”. According to this view, having a degree affects how you think. In sum, then, the issue is whether a liberal arts education teaches you how to think positively or not through your banal “adult life”

From there, I began to explore more of what a career in pharmacy would mean and take the steps necessary to pursue my dream. As I reflect on the past and look forward, becoming a Doctor of Pharmacy is still the clear answer to achieving both my immediate and long-term goals. My immediate goal is to work towards additional education to be better equipped to utilize my undergraduate degree. In particular, I have a strong interest in applying my knowledge of biochemistry to the area of pharmacy in order to better understand how different medications work, how to help patients understand their medications, and how to solve problems to better care for patients. Ultimately, through achieving a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, I desire to develop a meaningful career that would allow for life-long learning and impacting lives.

Pharmacy is a prolific field of study that is taking a prime position in the world of academia. It is quite demanding and needs completeness and vigilance. Thus, by going through pre-pharmacy, it will help me reshape my educational and career aspirations by bringing into reality what pharmacy entails through prerequisite coursework. I will also be able to come to terms with what the profession has at the end of the tunnel and asses with it marches my career goals. The profession is loaded with numerous employment and personal advancement opportunities, and I am motivated to study pre-pharmacy since it will spark of my innovativeness and optimistic that my future days would be worth the trouble.

After a lot of consideration, I decided I did not want to pursue a career in law, but I feel that a liberal arts college will allow me to continue to learn and grow in topics pertaining to law, without it being my major. This is very important to me, as I do not want to only learn about one area of knowledge; I want to continue to find and learn more about many different topics. These different topics will help me to become a well rounded individual, which will help me as a teacher. Studying at the West-Mec Pharmacy Technician program will eventually help me reach my long term goal of becoming a hospital pharmacist. This program will give me the benefit of hands-on training and will teach me the necessary skills that are required for a pharmacy technician. I want to have a career as a pharmacist in the future and I understand that becoming a pharmacy technician is not required, but it is a huge benefit. It is also quite likely that I will forget a vast majority of that information over the course of my life. That is why facts are not the most important thing one will take a way from a liberal arts education. As Einstein said, “The value of an education in a liberal arts college is not the learning of many facts but the training of the mind to think something that cannot be learned from textbooks” (1). There is value in a required class in the Liberal Arts Education” [Dr. Andrew Mills]. This was how Dr. Mills began his speech. This statement caught my attention and I began to wonder. What is the value or pre-eminence of taking courses outside my major? Will I benefit much from that or is it just a mere waste of my time? I have had a lot of courses so far and in each one, I have been able to make connections to the practice of pharmacy. The characteristics to become a pharmacist cannot be learned in college, it must be emphasized throughout the adolescent years. Some important features one needs to focus on are memorization, organization, being meticulous, and have a strong understanding of math and science. In the article “Top Skills You Need to be a Pharmacist”, the author states, “Before the pharmacist fills the prescription, they need to remember everything they learned […]. Pharmacists must know about hundreds of drugs — from their generic and brand names to their side effects and possible drug interactions” (Hart). Memorization is essential in order to be successful in this industry and is difficult to do. The organization skills of a future pharmacist must be top-notch because this field is based on it; medications need to be categorized by name, dosage amount, and amount of pills.
