This week’s movie is entitled Gravity. It was produced by Alfonso Cuaron and David Heyman in 2013. Since this movie came out, it has been controversial in the science community for a plethora of reasons. I will be discussing a few of them in this essay.
To start off, it is incredibly unrealistic to believe that these 2 astronauts would know absolutely nothing about one another. Astronauts begin preparing for their missions months to even years in advanced with the crew that they are going on the mission with. The fact that the astronauts did not even know where one another is from just makes the movie start off in an incredibly unrealistic atmosphere. I am not saying that it is a 100% guarantee that the astronauts would have been great friends who knew a lot about each other, but per this movie, they send strangers into space together who know absolutely nothing about each other. Not only is that illogical, but I believe it would be dangerous.
Another unrealistic scientific fact about the movie is when Dr. Ryan Stone was dislodged from the space shuttle at the beginning. For the other astronaut to get her, it takes him at least 5 minutes to devise a plan and put it into action. However, if this movie had been real, Stone would have been way too far for him to catch her. This is because she would have continued going at the exact same speed that she had originally been projected at for this entire 5 minutes. The fact that he had so much time to create a plan and put it into
Paul Haggis directed an Oscar winning film in 2004 called “Crash”, this movie basically talks about racism and the impact it has on the lives of people in Los Angeles. This movie got a good response from the viewers, as it concentrated on some real harsh realities of racism and asked some hard questions which are generally avoided in movies. This movie clearly promotes the a very delicate issue, and hence requires some detailed assessment. I personally feel the movie was good and it portrayed some very common events of racism, I think “Crash” shows realities, but in a not-so-realistic way.
The movie Before Night Falls directed by Julian Schnabel offers viewers a glimpse of how the homosexual community in Cuba was being mistreated under Fidel Castro’s regime. The true story is told in the eyes of Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas. The film depicts Arenas life in Cuba and all of the awful experiences that he had to deal with as a homosexual. Eventually he was arrested for false accusations of being a molester, however, he was actually under arrest for being a homosexual. Between the 1930s and 1990s, the Communist Cuba was abusive to the LGBT community as shown in their actions of harassment towards homosexuals, imprisoning the homosexuals, or sending them to re-education camps.
The Alien is a science fiction horror movie. Its setting in space and the presence of technology and artificial intelligence empathizes on its science fiction genre. Moreover, the presence of the Alien and the fact that it is a threat to human lives reflects it is also a horror film. The movie revolves around seven human beings that have the mission to return to earth from the space.
The Black Balloon directed by first time feature film director, Elissa Down, is a clever combination of two types of story, the coming of age romantic comedy, and a family drama with disability. Thomas finds Charlie an embarrassment in public, so when Thomas is attracted to Jackie, a girl in his swim class things become complicated. The purpose of the movie, The Black Balloon is a movie about a family struggling to cope with autism and learning to accept autism and people for who they are.
One Night the Moon (Rachel Perkins) is a marvellous portrayal of the conflict between the white settler and the Indigenous Australian, at the heart of which, is their attitude to the land and what it represents. The film demonstrates the conflict created through opposing views of land ownership due to misunderstanding and stubbornness over opinions, and highlights the mistreatment the Indigenous people have suffered over this confusion. The film follows a white settler, Jim Ryan, and an indigenous police officer, Albert, and their actions surrounding the disappearance of Jim’s daughter, Emily. The film depicts the conflict caused by their opposing attitudes towards the land, particularly Jim’s territorial view towards ‘his’ land. Perkins attempts to bring the similarity between their conflict in the 1930s and our society now to the fore by subtly hinting at the subconscious of the audience to cause them to consider their own ideas and values.

Empire Falls, written by Richard Russo, encompasses several concepts of the American identity and what it means to be an American. Russo focuses on the small town life in New England, illustrating a compelling story while narrating the lives of several different characters. While these characters seem to be different at the surface, they actually share several similarities. The characters of Empire Falls share the same outlook of life. Despite the American freedom they have, they will typically follow the path of life that they were born into and never question why. Overall, Empire Falls is a town of acceptance, accepting ones place in society as it is. The citizens of Empire Falls do not question their path of life and simply accept the basic truth of their lives. This speaks volumes for our country. Are we a country that will simply accept our set path of life? Or rather fight for what we believe in, despite the negative connotations it may bring. Through extensive analysis of the protagonist Miles Roby and other important characters in the novel, we will begin to what it means to be an American through a different perspective.
“The Mission” is a film that gives a historically accurate depiction of the events that took place in South America around 1750, displaying the jesuit missions and their attempt at expanding missionary ventures in the area. These missions foresaw the Jesuits going to uncharted areas of the jungle inhabited by the Guarani people, demonstrating the significance assimilating the Guarani people meant to the Jesuits. Additionally, the Guarani people were accurately displayed as a self-sustained society where basic components such as: productivity, protection, justice regulations and a form of a leader was evident in the form of their King. Nonetheless, the Guarani were an isolated group of individuals who were secluded to the outside world; their only contact with outside personnelles were slave traders who would put them into forced slavery for personal benefits. Not to mention the “Treaty of Madrid”, which resulted in the social and political disputes between the, Portuguese, Spanish and Catholic community; manifesting in the form of territorial conflicts and misunderstandings amongst the three vigorous societies, where each have a different purpose for the Guarani people.
Throughout the movie, “science” is used to prove the possibility of an event like this occurring. While there is evidence to suggest certain aspects of the film may have some truth to them, more often than not, the movie is backed by pseudoscience rather than real scientific data. Pseudoscience can be
Let yourself be transported to the future where drought, famine and disasters run rampant on Earth. The only way to ensure that the people of Earth survive is a journey into the depths of space. A story of survival, hardships, and triumph this is Interstellar. This film was directed by Christopher Nolan in 2014. To fully understand how this film uses the fundamentals of moviemaking to make a complete and complex film I will be discussing the elements of narrative, mise en scene, cinematography, acting, editing and sound.
‘Touching The Void’ is a documentary based on a true story about two men called Joe Simpson and Simon Yates who climbed on the west face of Siula Grande (6,344m) in the Cordillera Huayhuash in the PeruvianAndes. The first five minutes of the documentary is very effective because it draws you in and makes you want to watch the rest of the documentary, the director does this by using a lot of effective techniques. The techniques used are Photography, Camera angles, Music and sound effects, Narrative, Language, Tone and Structure.
The movie Falling Down portrays many examples of the movie reflecting, influencing, and changing society. The movie reflects society's many flaws such as inflation of prices and unneeded budget spending. The movie also influences others to point out society’s flaws by using force. Finally, the movie changes society by showing the movie in the point of view of a person that is classified as a realist.
The universal, raw connection between humanity is most apparent in adverse circumstances. In The Martian, directed by Ridley Scott and Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity, the trials and opportunities of space traversal are explored in a realistic and visceral manner. The disastrous events that occur in the films cast a light on the basic need for human connection and the resulting consequences of isolation. The films investigate the effect isolation can have on even the strongest mind as the characters struggle against their environment. Furthermore, Scott and Cuaron present the idea that human connection is vital to a good quality of life. This theme of isolation and its effect on humans is portrayed using a variety of literary and film conventions including symbols and motifs, sound and lighting and camera angles. The director’s present diverse views concerning humanity, isolation and subsequent survival in unpropitious conditions.
The movie Gravity is played by Sandra Bullock and Georgy Clooney. This movie presents the concept of heroism. The movie tells the story that two astronauts conduct a space mission. However, a Russian missile strike on a defunct satellite, causing a cloud of debris in space. The debris crashes on the space shuttle of these astronauts, killing others except for the two main characters. These two have to try everything they can to return the earth. However, the supplies and facilities are only enough to send one astronaut back to earth after the crash of debris. To make sure that the female astronaut can return to earth safely, the male astronaut sacrifices himself. Eventually, although experiencing a lot of difficulties, the female astronaut finally launches on the earth safely.
The main dilemma, and theme of the entire film, was the destruction of the International Space Station (ISS) and most of the astronauts on board. Russia launched a missile into space to destroy one of their satellites. This turned into a problem when the launch was successful, but the target was missed and the mission failed. Debris was left spiraling through space at a rapid pace. Dr. Ryan Stone survived the destruction along with
