Independent Study Unit ISU Task 1 – Research & Literary Analysis 1. The name of the song that I selected is Mockingbird by Marshall Bruce Mathers III also known as Eminem. Marshall was born to Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr. and Deborah Rae Nelson who at this time were 21 years old and 17 years old respectively. Marshall’s father had abandoned him and his family when he was a newborn, which in return made his mom raise Marshall as a single mother. Deborah was never able to keep a job for more than a couple months, which caused them to move between areas on a regular basis. This meant that Marshall had to live in different places growing up, which had mostly included public housing projects. He has even gone on to state about this time, “I would change schools two, three times a year.” Thus, Marshall had a tough time making friends and was generally treated as an outsider by many other kids, even being bullied on multiple instances. Marshall went on to drop out of school at the age of 17, after failing the 9th grade three times. Even though Marshall was a high school dropout, he did however have a love for English, he has said "I found that no matter how bad I was at school, like, and no matter how low my grades might have been at sometimes, I always was good at English ... I just felt like I wanna be able to have all of these words at my disposal, in my vocabulary at all times whenever I need to pull 'em out. You know, somewhere, they 'll be stored, like, locked away." He soon
I chose “Humble and Kind,” by Tim McGraw as my theme song. “Humble and Kind” is a very good song that has very unique lyrics. The song gives advice on how to live. There are many manners in this song that are very important. The song is a parent telling their child how they should live life. It seems that the artist wrote the song on how he wishes he would have acted when he was younger. One of the main messages of this song are that everyone has something in their lives, but you still need to be nice. Some of the lyrics on the song are about the 10 Commandments. Even though we grow up, we still need to remember our manners and how to live life. “Don’t hold a grudge or a chip and here’s why Bitterness keeps you from flying.” This is an example
We see how these concepts norms, values, structure and social facts, and agency give an understanding to lyrics in a song for society and how the concepts tell the story in the song “Wrong way” by Sublime. Many important factors came from these concepts we have to see the role society (her father, brothers, and narrative) played in Annie’s life and what influenced her choices in life. Symbolic interaction theory effectively explains the narrative in this song because of the different views Annie and him see with her life, that her reality of her life is a good life, and that he does not see it as a good way of life but as a bad road ahead.
“We Found Love” is a popular song produced by Calvin Harris and features singer Rihanna. “We Found Love” reached the number one spot in the top charts in multiple countries in 2012 and the music video became popular very quickly after being filmed in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The music video features a young couple living in an impoverished council estate in West Belfast. Both characters portrayed in the music video are in their twenties and of mixed race, one parent being black and the other being Caucasian. Their relationship is distinguished by domestic violence as the couple is seen yelling, pushing and hurting one another, along with stealing from convenience stores, gambling and abusing drugs and alcohol together.
This song is about going to school and it represent the tenth amendment because North Carolina law said that kids should go to school.
Many songs that we listened to sounded like they came right out of Brave New World. The ones I liked most would have to be “Can't Feel My Face”, “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” and “I Am Produced”.
The first lyric captures the life that Eminem had. He didn’t have anything growing up and he wanted to change that for
58% of Americans believe that racism is still a big problem in the world even though there are hate crime laws in America that are supposed to “solve” problems of racism. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee invited two innocent children, Jem and Scout to the real world situation of social injustice. Where there is a guy that was punished for doing nothing wrong, maybe the reason is that he is different from others, different by race. This essay will be comparing and contrasting To Kill A Mockingbird to a song by the Black Eyed Peas, Where is the Love, where it is about social injustices, but the people in this world need to stand up to all the negativity and spread positivity instead. Though Harper Lee and the Black Eyed Peas both demonstrate the fight for justice, Harper Lee utilizes social injustices and symbolism; whereas, the Black Eyed Peas apply anadiplosis and lyrical diction.
Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ highlights the many social injustices that take place within Maycomb County, Alabama. Told from the perspective of a young girl named Scout, with her innocence drastically molding the story. Whilst heavily focusing on conflict amongst society, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ features small, yet heavy, bits of internal conflict as well. Lee uses isolation and setting to show precisely how no one will never truly understand a person unless they are that person.
The song "The message" by Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five depicts the struggle of young black adults growing up in society. The struggle to make it out of poverty can be compared to survival of the fittest in a jungle. Only the strong would survive and adapt to the changes to fit in. Trying their best to make a betterment with whatever little society offers. Being a young black African American in the early 1980's was not easy. It was easier to live the fast life and gain fast money by being part of the drug community. Drugs, guns, and money was glamorized and this is what the young adults looked at as a means of getting rich. In the songs, a young man talks about how he is trying hard to hold on to the little bit of sanity he has left in his soul. He talks about the struggle he endures while trying not to get pushed over the edge. He was born an innocent child who's blind to the ways of mind kind. Growing up he faced many challenges and had to fight
I chose the piece “I’m here”, by Jay Frankston because of its relatability in the world today. With doctors learning more and more about mental illnesses I find that “the anxiety of not being heard” (4) as well as “I’m just a dot. An ant in the crowd.” (7-8) feelings are relatable to today’s teenagers, myself included. Whenever I do feel low, I find myself screaming out, but not truly screaming. I find
“Fifteen songs on my playlist” is a poem written by a young girl named Ana Jac. In “Fifteen songs on my playlist” Jac explains the hardships that she goes through in her lifetime; she talks about how ever since she was young she knew her parents were never in love and this caused them to get a divorce. The narrator is also reminded of her emotions constantly throughout the poem. In “Fifteen songs in my playlist” Ana Jac uses simile, metaphor, and personification to suggest that sometimes people have to endure many challenges in order to shape and understand themselves.
To Kill a Mockingbird, a Pulitzer Prize winning novel has taught many people about the reality of life in the mid 1900’s and is a book that captures the attention of the reader as soon as they first pick it up. This amazing book written by Harper Lee is set in a small town called Maycomb, which is located in Alabama. It is set in the 1930’s a time between the rush of the roaring twenties and the distress of World War II in the 1940’s. This was a time when the economy was low and money was scarce for both races, Whites and African Americans. The cruelty of racism still loomed over communities and this had a huge impact on the children of this decade. To Kill a Mockingbird exhibits the harsh cruelty of racism and stereotyping throughout a community through tangent events and show the impact it has on children’s innocence through the perspective of Scout and Jem Finch. These two children of a respected lawyer are forced to face the cruelty of violence and racism while their father fights for the justice of an African American who has been charged with the rape of a white girl. The Great Depression in the 1930’s is accurately portrayed in Harper Lee’s novel through the representation of families seeking financial aid due to scarcity of money, the methods of payments that many families had to use and also the hostility and prejudice attitudes that were between the citizens of many families in Maycomb during this time. Many people are shown struggling in this novel due to this
I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This book is about a girl named Scout Finch who lives with her brother, Jem, and father, Atticus, during the Great Depression. They live in a small town called Maycomb, Alabama where everybody knows all of the people who live in their town. Atticus defends Tom Robinson, a black man, who was accused of raping a white woman. Turmoil in Maycomb starts to surface and the town is turning against Atticus. The town takes their frustrations out on Jem and Scout for their father’s dusties as a lawyer. In this paper I will be evaluaitng and questioning.
The song—Apologize—is composed by OneRepublic; it’s one of my favorite song. It tells us that if you feel guilty about something, you should have consideration ahead of time. That’s because apologising is too late to solve it. The reason why I love this song is that the singer’s voice is soft which makes me so comfortable; and the rhythm of this song sounds very good. In a word, this song encourages me, comforts me. How nice it
As the power of a song resides completely in its lyrics, it is no longer surprising that music can be healing, inspiring, or even motivating. After introducing this insight to my life, it became very rare for me to listen to any Imagine Dragons’ song without it leaving an impact on my life and my perspectives. Imagine Dragons is a rock band whose music tends to address both personal and social issues. It’s Time, one of their biggest hits and most influential songs, was written by the band’s lead singer Dan Reynolds during a difficult time in his life. “ I was not very happy with who I was, I guess, and I wanted to make some changes” says the singer in an interview with Purevolume , in which he addresses It’s Time as a poem he wrote to express
