Technology At Its Finest: Is it Good or Bad? Over this past decade or so, people all around the globe have been granted with greater advancements in technology. From cellphones we can talk to, to 3-Dimensional televisions, we are able to pretty much do anything thanks to these high-tech products. But, should we really be grateful for these easy-to-use devices, or are they taking over the lives of millions? In the articles written by Michael Malone and Daniel Burrus, we receive an inside look on whether todays modern, wired, Web world is, or is not, benefitting society. He mentions that a middle aged woman who spent the majority of her life deaf, can now hear because of a micro-implant . “This is just one example of how we are using technology to do something wonderful and human--to make the world even better,” Burrus said. However, when Malone asked the kids what they gain from technology, their response was a little different than what Burrus came up with. "We don't get as much out of things if we don't experience them ourselves,” the kids believed that the information they gained from the Web, cell phones, and television was a just a re-creation of the natural world, and that something was being lost in the midst of the translation. Burrus’ essay doesn’t necessarily say that technology is good for society, and Malone doesn’t state that it’s bad, but the fact that neither author wrote about the opposing view kind of gives away their personal opinion. When he asked the eighth graders why technology has a negative impact on their lives, Malone gave a reason as well as an explanation to their responses. One of the kids said that “technology is the key to procrastination.” In the article, Malone stated that 80 percent of the kids reported that they had lost exquisite amounts of sleep due to playing on the internet, and 50 percent said they had forgotten to do homework for the same reason.
