Analysis of the poem “Africa” by David Diop within the context of Anthills of the Savannah. Chapter 10 of Anthills of the Savannah, entitled, impetuous son, opens with a stanza from David Diop’s poem Africa, which is where the title of the chapter gets its name from, and from my initial instinct, is the key phrase in the poem, but the key question is what does this poem have to do with the social context of the story other than the fact that its named after the continent in which anthills is set. I also assume that this poem has some sort of relation to Ikem’s Hymn to the sun earlier on in the play. One question however, is, who is the slave driver? Or should I say, who is the poet referring to as the slave driver, and is it the same person or people within the context of the story? In performing some research into the poem and David Diop, I found out he was a revolutionary writer, focusing on the colonial period and the freeing of the African nations from the clutches of the European colonists, he also died in 1960, before many of the colonies were freed, and the dictatorships sprang up, so obviously through the poem he is referring to the colonialists as the slave drivers, but this is manipulated in the context of Anthills, to be His Excellency and the government, who live in luxury whilst the majority of the population live in poor, almost slave like conditions. The eponymous name of the chapter, “impetuous son” relates to the line in the poem, “impetuous son, that tree young and strong”, a line which holds significance within the story of anthills, because it symbolizes His Excellency and it is where I believe the poem links back to the Hymn to the sun. Impetuous can be defined as impulsive, done without care, or even violent. And the word son, could synonymously and characteristically stand in for the word sun, which relates to the “undying eye of god” the deadly African sun that is destroying the country, but in the poem, literally takes the form of His Excellency since “son” is
Stories are for those late hours in the night when you can’t remember how you got from where you were to where you are now. Stories are for eternity, when memory is erased, when there is nothing to remember except the story” (O’brien 36). Life within itself is a story, a story ever present and ever changing, defining the person one becomes to be. Stories are etched into the minds every individual person, the good and the bad. This novel is a cluster of short stories experienced by the protagonist and his fellow companions.
Secondly, the speaker of the poem can be described as underprivileged, and this is shown throughout the entire poem. For example, line 1 of the poem it states "some are teethed on a silver spoon” and line 5 it states "some are swaddled in silk and down”. This shows that the speaker is not the same as the person who is teethed on a silver spoon or cared for very carefully. This inclusion also shows that the speaker was not born into a wealthy family and so the speaker must fight for what they need pertaining to themselves and the family.
As the poem progresses, the narrator continues to use certain terms that overall portray what he went through.
The poem “A Story” by Li young Lee tells of a young child asking his father for story. The boy simply wants a story that he has never heard, his father is bombarded with panic as he seems to think he is disappointing his son. Through analysis of structure, points of view and metaphors this seemingly simple story is transformed into a deep meaningful poem about a complex relationship between a father and son.
Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words. Good morning Ms Linton and students, today I will be informing you on why you must choose these two poems for the poetry speaking contest. The poems I have chosen are ‘The Man from Ironbark’, by Banjo Patterson as well as ‘He Started the Cycling Craze’ by myself. Narratives help the readers enjoy and understand poetry as it is a way the poets can connect to their readers by using storylines that may relate to them or something that they enjoy.
It also shows a shift from the present situation to a future one then back to the present. In the beginning of the poem the son is currently waiting for his father to tell him a story and has a sense of eagerness to him while the father has a sense of tiredness to him. This scene is depicted as the father being “in a room full of books in a world of stories,” (6-7) yet the father has difficult trying to come up with a story to tell despite how many are around home. The room that they are in is described as having books of stories inside of it and outside of the room is the whole world that is full of stories to tell. At this point the problem is that the father cannot think of a story to tell his son who asked him to tell him a new story which, according to the father, seems to be the beginning of the end. The father believes that since he is not able to tell stories as quickly and easily as he could before then one day soon, “the boy will give up on his father,” (8-9). These thoughts help to prepare and give background to the glimpse into the future when the boy is getting ready to leave his father by packing his clothes and having his keys ready to go. Since the father saw the day he would lose his son to manhood, once the day actually came the father seemed very upset at the boy but not for leaving but more so for the reasons that he is. The father yells at the son, “Are you a god...that I sit mute before you? Am I a god that I should never disappoint,” (16-18). It seems that the father and son have had an argument or disagreement and the son did not want to deal with all the problems that had grown to be too much for him so he chooses to not say anything to his father at all as he is getting ready to leave. The father calls him out on this and claims that he is imperfect and will disappoint

The way that there are only a few descriptions scattered about and that it focuses on dialogue is what allows us to figure out what the characters are speaking about and to find the intentions behind their words. In today’s modern view, poetry has become more than just paragraphs that rhyme at the end of each sentence. If the reader has an open mind and the ability to read in between the lines, they discover more than they have bargained for. Some poems might have stories of suffering or abuse, while others contain happy times and great joy. Regardless of what the poems contains, all poems display an expression. That very moment when the writer begins his mental journey with that pen and paper is where all feelings are let out. As poetry is continues to be written, the reader begins to see patterns within each poem. On the other hand, poems have nothing at all in common with one another. This collection of over ninty words is much more than just a poem. It’s a story of millions of people. It ties in rhymes, sadness, happiness, religion and anger though a broad spectrum of other ideas.
Colleen McElroy uses her poetry to describe her culture and heritage in a very historical manner. McElroy’s poetry is very different from Hughes and Clifton in the sense that she uses so many references to her ancestors culture back in Africa. “My memory floats down a long narrow hall, A calabash of history. Grandpa stood high in Watusi shadows Where effigies of my ancestors are captured in Beatle tunes, And crowns never touch Bantu heads. My past is a slender dancer reflected briefly Like a leopard in fingers of fire. The future Dahomey is a house of 16 doors, the totem of Burundi counts 17 warriors-- In reverse generations. Heritage is more than following the lineage of a people, the land in which they live is equally as involved. This ethnic and topographical following of these people gives her Clifton’s poetry the breath
The reader must participate in the making of the poem or story by digging the structure out and create coherence out of the seeming incoherence. Therefore, the search for meaning, even if it does not succeed, becomes meaningful itself.
