Here we stand before you today, one of us rich and clean, one of us poor and dirty. Which one would you want to approach more?
Good afternoon Rev and fellow students,
Today we will be analysing and breaking down chapter 3 1:13 by James.
James is known to be Jesus’ half-brother. He was one of the select individuals Christ appeared to after his resurrection and is a leader in the important council of Jerusalem. The book of James is pieced together by people recording his thoughts and it is a general epistle. There are many aspect to his book but the key personalities of this book are James and persecuted Christians. James wrote this book to Jewish believers to encourage them to endure and live bold Christian lives and about practical Christian living that reflects a genuine faith that transforms lives.
2 My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favouritism. 2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. 3 If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” 4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?
5 Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? 6 But you
Reverend Young addresses Christians about wealth inequality as he states that Jesus cared for the poor and consequently, followers of the faith have an obligation to do the same.
In S.E Hinton's novel, The Outsiders, there were three significant passages from Chapter 9. As Johnny was in the process of dying, he mentioned a very catchy passage to Ponyboy: "Stay gold, Ponyboy"(148). This quote defined that all things must have an ending such as the beautiful things you've witnessed. For instance, Johnny and Ponyboy realized that their relationship was about to come to an end, so Johnny advises Ponyboy to stay the way he is or be innocent. And he also meant that Ponyboy needs to protect himself when he's in danger.
The structure of the Book of James begins as a letter and later vacillates between topics, at times appearing to be more of a sermon addressed to those in the congregation of Jewish Christians. Considered by some to be wisdom literature, James introduces and argues for several topics and themes. In James 2:16-26, the themes of faith, good works, and proper treatment of the poor. At times the structure of James resembles blocks of teaching and exhortation. Luther even accused the author of “throwing things together…. Chaotically.”8 Regardless of
October 4th, 1957, a russian made object is launched into space. This was the first thing ever sent into space by mankind. This event could not have come at a worse time in history. It occurred in the middle of the Cold War between primarily the United States of America and Soviet Union, but really between all capitalist and communist governments around the world. If this feat had been accomplished outside the time period of this feud or by a neutral country it would have been celebrated worldwide.
In this chapter, Richards discusses the relationship between Christianity, capitalism, and the poor. He also explains the piety myth, which is the emphasis of intention at the expense of knowledge of consequence. Richards begins by explaining Jesus’s relationship with the poor, and how Gods two greatest commandments are how we should, “love the lord your God with all your soul, and love your neighbor as yourself.” The author believes this verse reflects how modern day Christ followers should react to certain popular policies by practicing prudence, which is seeing reality as it is and acting accordingly.
Unfortunately, this fact is so true of our society today, but Yancey goes on to show how Jesus makes an extra effort to reach out to he poor. He gives a list, which he got from another writer, on the advantages of being poor. This list really made an impact on me. It showed me how I need to be more open to what God has to say, and not so involved with the materialistic and secular views of today. I need to focus on what God has planned for me, and not make my focus to be what other people think of me. “Strength, good looks, connections, and the competitive instinct may bring a person success in a society like ours, but those very qualities may block entrance to the kingdom of heaven” (Yancey 114).
In chapter nine, the boys have definitely proven the point that they have lost all their innocence. The crime that the boys have committed unknowingly is beyond justification. The irony of the murder of Simon is that he was coming to tell the boys that there is no beast and instead the boys mistook Simon to be the beast, and ended his life.It is quite evident the boys have lost all control on all aspects of their old lives, whether it b e by their appearance have changed, manners or their perspective on abiding rules. The ritual dances they perform, the intimidating painted faces, and violent hunting are just a couple of ways showing their loss of control over their old proper selves that have turned into gruesome savages.Everyone has had to
The book of James is a General Epistle (Apostolic Letter). James the half-brother of Jesus WHOSE scholars believe he wrote it approximately 60 A.D. It was likely the first New Testament book (letter) to be written. The key personalities of this book are James and Persecuted Christians. James wrote this book to Jewish believers to encourage them to endure and live bold Christian lives.
The book of James is the fifty-nine book of the Bible. It consist of many inspiring verse that make me become a better person. The three most remarkable memorize that I learn from the book of James is God want me to don’t look down on poor people. God want me to use my tongue to praise Him. God want me to be patience and wait until the hope comes.
James wrote to the twelve tribes scattered aboard who are Christians. The simple fact that James refers to Jesus in the opening means his audience is Jewish Christians because a non-believing Jew would not recognize the authority of Jesus as Lord and Christ. James refers to the synagogue in chapter 2 verse 2 helping again to narrow down the target audience. The epistle, most likely written from Jerusalem since there are no records indicating James ever left Jerusalem after becoming the leader of the church there. Cultural Context
The book of James has created disputations amongst its readers for years. Like almost all of the New Testament writings, contemporary readers have questions about it origin, composition, and content. Also like most New Testament writings, there are multiple hypotheses that have been presented to answer each of these enquiries. For example, many scholars have suggested that it is the least Christian amongst all of the New Testament writings due to the fact that it only references the name of Jesus twice. This a particular point that I feel needs to be addressed when trying to understand James, and it is a point I will answer further while also trying to present information regarding other possible questions an individual may have while reading
don’t need to be rich but you need to give what you can to the poor,
Jesus calls all of his followers to live a life of poverty. Today, our culture places value on material objects, and it is difficult to live in poverty. It is not simple to balance poverty with materialism and one’s relationship with God. While the level of wealth one enjoys is not indicative of one’s relationship with God, it can indicate how much trust that person has for God. Anyone can follow Jesus’ call to poverty, and it encourages His followers to focus on God.
He was not always a Christ-follower and his relationship with Jesus began in a strained state. He did not accept Christ until after the resurrection of Jesus. Through an encounter with the Holy Spirit, and his newfound belief in Christ, James became the leader of the Christian church. He advised many characteristics regarding the church and imparted insight to the description of the bride of Christ in Acts as well. James even authored an Epistle is recognized as a practical handbook for Christians.
