Findings
The purpose of this qualitative study was to report the findings of international students’ challenging experiences in the American classroom setting in Higher Education. The activities include, but are not limited to, classroom discussions, and interactions with professors. For the purpose of this study, classroom practices in institutions of higher education in the United States are identified as a group of activities that take place in a classroom setting. After analyzing the interviews, the following themes emerged: The Discussion is in American Culture, Do Students Understand When I’m Talking?, American Professors Aren’t Controlling and Organized,

And sometimes I don’t want to ask because they are learning too. And I don’t want to interrupt their learning process, so anything relating to American, unique to American context, I feel hard to understand at first. If someone introduced me that would be easier, but in a classroom setting usually I don’t have time to ask for detail things so its one of the challenges.
Similarly Zahra, a freshman a speech language pathology and audiology major also indicated that it was hard for her to participate in certain classroom discussions because the students in her class would have discussions that were culture based which she wasn’t familiar with, or didn’t understand. She said:
The culture is hard to understand too because sometimes when I talk about something if the discussion is about cultural things or something like that sometimes it is hard for me to like transfer the picture from my mind to other because they don’t see this picture.
Do Students Understand When I’m Talking?
Related to their challenges, both of the participants also expressed their concern about the domestic students understanding what they said. They both had fear that when they spoke the students didn’t understand what they said, and instead they would prefer to keep quiet instead, so they don’t feel embarrassed during the conversation. In the article, “Colleges Adapt to New Kinds of Students from Abroad,” Karin Fischer (2011) explains the increase of foreign students in U.S. universities leads to make more problems in campus and how universities are trying to overcome those problems and help foreign students to adapt to campus. Fischer explains the increase of the foreign undergraduate students due to the support from foreign governments. Fischer quotes Wesley Young, the director of services for international students and scholars at the University of California at Davis, to discuss that the increase of foreign undergraduate students especially requires more care and help than graduate students. If we understand the complexities of the cultures around us, we can better relate to the people engaged in the other cultures. It also allows us to better understand why others are acting the way they are. At the hospital I work at, we are taught about how others use the word “yes.” For instance, I might ask if they understand the paperwork they are signing and they will respond with “yes.” However, to them the “yes” might not be an agreement with the understanding the paperwork but they are using “yes” to be respectful. Culture is very important to many individuals in this world. It plays key parts in a vast amount of people’s lives. While some may follow everything to do with their culture, your culture doesn’t have to affect your life. You can still choose to have your own personal views, or to follow your accustomed culture. People will all view everything differently depending on who they are, what cultural background they have, and what scenario they’re in.
Cultural differences pose several barriers for students and may impair their opportunity to learn. These barriers are created by differences in language expression, communication style, preferred learning style, gender-role customs and behaviors, and limited parental involvement due to these cultural or socioeconomic barriers
Language is a communication method that makes everything easy to communicate with others. The language barrier is the biggest challenge and hurdle of most people whom their English is a second language. Growing up in a family with parents that only speak another language could be viewed very similarly to a double-edged sword. This challenge with society forces people to learn the English language. Although there a lot of difficulties with the second language, eventually the transition between both languages would become easier by time and more practice. Starting to be able to comprehend the English language is the best way overcomes this barrier. Although these challenges were not easy to overcome, persistence, dedication and hard work would facilitate everything. Despite the fact that language is considered the biggest barrier, culture comes as a second harder barrier in means of communication. Effective communication with people of different cultures is especially challenging. Culture on the other hand, provides people with ways of thinking, seeing and hearing and, then understands the things around. Thus, the same word can mean different things to people from different cultures, even when they talk the same language. “Neither a Wallflower Nor a Paris Geller Be” by Rebecca Schuman is a witty article about classroom participation in college lectures. This article is primarily directed towards college students around ages 18 to 25. This is obvious through Schuman’s references to professors from the student viewpoint and through direct addresses to the students who are reading the article. She also uses the pronoun us to refer to herself as a professor and to speak on behalf of college professors in general. Additionally, in an attempt to relate to students, Schuman references the struggle that students face when it comes to shyness, overbearing classmates, and completing reading assignments. These college students are of all genders and all races/ethnicities.
Every year there are around 435,000 international students enrolled in universities around the UK (UKCISA). Studying abroad for a lot of these students is a privilege, however it can be a stressful experience for various reasons. There are plenty of challenges, other than language barrier, that these students face, like major culture shock, homesickness, and financial difficulties.
College level requires students to be prepared at all cost to face various challenges and learn how to overcome them before it affects their future. College also instructs students to a higher level of responsibility and management at their work place, at their house, and everywhere they might be in contact with people. “My Freshman Year: What a Professor Learned by Becoming a Student” by Rebekah Nathan, is one of the best legitimate books about anyone’s freshmen year in college. As a sophomore, I can vouch for that. Nathan uses facts, multiple studies, and an ample amount of research to write a beneficial book to represent someone’s freshmen year of college. Nathan, after teaching for 15 years starts to wonder why fewer students are participating in class discussions, reading assignments, homework, attending class, being polite, and not coming to her during office hours. Nathan learns how to adapt to having different demographics than her peers, she learns how it feels to be an international student in the U.S., and she learns how to help her teach as a professor to how students act in present day.
Learning the verbal and nonverbal way that people communicate in one’s environment is the key to one’s success. When one faces the challenges that the opposite sex can present to each other, and learn to communicate effectively with one another one can begin to see the world from a different perspective. This different perspective can oftentimes be a better way of viewing things then the same old way that has always been used. In the same respect gaining an appreciation and understanding of the way other cultures communicate can give one another tool to use when tackling problems. In Nathan’s article, she keeps her principal focus on how foreign students interact with American students and the distinctive type of relationships that they build. It is quite strange to some of the foreign student’s that Nathan has interviewed about how non-committed American students are to the foreign students because American 's students do not socialize as much, and tends to spend more time alone. Furthermore, they will make small talk rather than being close friends or let it evolve into more. At that point, Nathan turns her center towards the difference between a relationship and a friendship between American and foreign students. She also discusses with different foreign students with different background and how they interact with their American roommates, and the relationship that they bond. In addition, American student’s family is a distinct subject from school but for international students, it is something naturally integrated into their social lives, which is why they care so much about their parents (Nathan 73). Furthermore, she discusses how many foreign students make comments about how different students look and the lack of attention that they give their professor compared to in their home country. I totally agree with your point on the second paragraph. I think different culture is difficult to understand because people are so familiar with their own culture. When I was in China, it was really hard to go to sleep in New Year, because people would come outside to light the firecrackers. Some Chinese people only used the ones that makes sound, not the fireworks, and it bothered me a lot. It was loud and it made the ground dusty. I thought people are not respecting those who are sleeping, but everything was explained when my Chinese teacher told me the meaning of it.
International students face many different challenges when studying abroad. This is due to many factors. First, they are living in a country very far away from their own. The country they are studying at has a very different way of life than theirs. Further more, the laws in that country are much different than the laws in their own country. Due to that they face a lot of problems trying to adapt to this new culture. Me personally as an international student in the US studying at ASU, have faced three particularly difficult challenges that I was able to overcome through time. In this essay I will explain how international students can overcome tough challenges and situations.
Understanding about a different culture takes time, patience y perseverance. Some of the important facts to learn and experience about a new culture include: new language, different traditions, different food, different quality of life, different music etc. The idea of changing life dramatically takes courage, patience and dedication. Every day comes with a different challenge, whether they are daily basic living tasks or more specific situations that requires the person to be able to understand and respond immediately. Simple tasks like reading, driving, communicating, talking, as well as counting money or even paying for a coffee become a big challenge for many people every day who are learning about a different culture.
