1. In what ways are you “smart” at math? Highlight all of the things you’re good at. (Everyone is good at some of these things and no one is good at all of them!) • making observations • making predictions • finding patterns • drawing diagrams • remembering vocabulary • estimating • organizing information into tables or charts • using symbols • visualizing • making conjectures • tinkering with problems • using math language • thinking abstractly • explaining my thinking out loud • explaining my thinking on paper • remembering mathematical procedures • following directions • finding my mistakes • revising my thinking • finding similarities and differences between things • doing mental math • making guesses • coming up with …show more content…
efully to others • valuing others’ ideas • being curious about others’ ideas • making connections between different ideas • being respectful and supportive of others • pointing out connections between something we’re currently working on and something we have already explored • staying focused • identifying what I do understand and what I don’t yet understand • thinking from the perspective of a skeptic • coming up with new ideas based on things that others have said or done • extending others’ ideas in new directions • analyzing others’ ideas critically, but respectfully • raising questions mathematical questions that push on our current understanding • using a tentative stance (rather than a “know-it-all” stance) • figuring out what others are saying (or what they are trying to say) • asking questions • building on others’ ideas • being positive and a “cheerleader” for my group • getting each member of my group to share his/her ideas • recording my group’s ideas and decisions • verbally summarizing my group’s ideas and decisions • sharing my ideas, even if I am not sure that my ideas are completely correct • making sure I understand before moving on to the next problem • making sure that everyone in my group understands before moving on to the next problem • making sure that quieter members of my group get to share their ideas • helping my group work together on the problem Of the things you highlighted above, what are two things that you are especially
Our group worked on all the components of the project together, which included the research, reference pages, scripts, and the PowerPoint. I believe our decision to not assign specific tasks to a single individual allowed us to fully understand all the information and get along better due to the fact we all were doing the same amount of work. In a group setting, we had to work together and communicate with one another in order to create a suitable presentation. One thing I saw that our group thrived at was listening to one another. Our book defines listening as the “active, complex process that consists of being mindful, physically receiving messages, selecting and organizing messages, interpreting messages, responding, and remembering (Wood, 2016).” Each group member had to

Learning how to work effectively in a group situation is key to success in many professions as well as in social situations. Groups vary from each other based on the individuals that make up each group, all of us belong to various groups at one time or another. The roles that we fulfill vary from group to
suggests new ideas to solve group problem or new ways for the group to organize the task
I comunicated ideas and points with my group during the lab and during the poster to better understand it. I introduced ideas that would make the poster look nicer with better sticky notes that were colorful and i talked to them about wh was doing what for the poster so everyone had something to do and no one was left with
Part B. Describe two mathematical strengths for each student whose response indicates the need to reteach the math content.
As all members of my team had jobs as well as university, we struggled to find time to meet up in order to work on the assignment together from the beginning. Because of this, we agreed briefly to work on the assignment separately and then to combine the day before our problem set was due to combine our work and check each other’s answers. For the purpose of anonymity, let’s term the first person in our group Aaron, the second Betty and the third Charlie. We agreed that Aaron would put the majority of their effort into the maths component of Question 1, Betty would put the majority of their effort into the same in Question 2 whilst Charlie would work on the theory components of each questions. It was thought that by having ‘ownership’ over a section each, we would be more likely to have that section perfect and hopefully avoid any free-riding.
I would never say anything because I didn’t want to slow everyone else down. Using this behavior I made sure that when I didn’t understand I would ask things like, “Do you mean (whatever I needed to understand), or, “So you're saying that…”. It not only helped me understand better and faster, but it saved me a lot of time because now I wouldn’t have to look it up on the internet or in the textbook. Another behavior that helped me a great amount would be requesting information. An example of this would be to start a new problem I would say, “So how would we solve this problem?” It helped me and my group stay on task and helped us work better as a group. I was not the only person who used this behavior and our group had a great time focusing. This behavior also works on helping you become a better speaker. I’m fairly shy so this helped me feel like I was more a part of the group. The last behavior I used more than the others would be testing reasoning. When a group member would come up with what he or she thought was the answer to the problem they would explain
The establishment of how to communicate with each other was vital and instrumental in being able to stay on task and get our assignments completed in a timely manner. Several of our team members will play devil’s advocate to make sure the directions we are given are clearly followed. The group individuals have demonstrated different talents during being a group and we have all just in consensus (without speaking it) allow that person to take over the portion they are expedited in. For example, Cintia is great at graphics she’s demonstrated a talent for using different software creating eye catching graphics to our projects, therefore the group knows that Cintia will take that portion of the task on if it’s
In math class I would get my work done, then I would help students with questions that they didn’t understand. I like helping people that have trouble with the topics in math class. Math is my favorite subject. I like doing math in class and it’s one of the classes I do better than others. I really enjoy doing projects in math and science class. I especially like when we had to make our own rockets out of paper and tape. We even flew them. Also, we made a lava lamp. Well, in 6th grade I had math has my first block and that would cheer me up every single day in the morning. Those are some reasons why I want to be in the MST magnet program.
This semester I’ve learned to become more aware with simple things such as grammar and spelling. In a rush to get my assignments done, I’ve forgot the importance of double checking and proofreading my work. Ways that can help improve this for the future would be to ask a peer to read over my work or to double check the resources and facts through another liable resource. I’ve also learned that social skills in groups are essential! Through the experience of one of my groups, I simply assumed all members worked at the same pace; and we would all be done within a good timeline. When in reality I became aware that everyone has their faults and strengths, and working together to even each other out is the most sensible option. Specifically; a member
In the passage “Ability? Effort? Or Mindset?” by Constance Staley, she speaks about how one's mindset can determine whether or not they succeed in life. She continuously emphasizes the idea of always practicing and working hard, but what about those that are naturally adept at certain subjects. Some people are great at Math and others are great at English. Some enjoy natural science while others despise it and prefer the precise and technical science of physics. What goes on in our heads where we prefer, and perform significantly better at, certain subjects and not others? We as humans stick to what comes naturally to us and I simply think that if one performs well at English and enjoys working at English, why should
While completing my group WIKI, I feel that each member in my group has put in lots of effort and tried to make it as perfect as possible. The biggest challenge I faced is that don’t have much ideas about Idaho so I need to spend more time to search for the information. Luckily, I have very good group members that help me out. I think our group work very well, we help each other and point out the mistakes and make the correction together. The weakeness of my group is we did not read through the instructions carefully and made some mistakes on the references part. Generally, we tried our best in doing that and it is a great team to work
When doing so the other group members were active listener, by using their whole body verbally and nonverbal. Like facing the speaker and giving eye contact and try to avoided interruption. The group also acknowledges the thoughts of the speaker by giving constructive feed back. Due to the effectiveness of the group communication, we were able to build trust, respect and understand the issues and make decision for effective change. We illustrate this by coming together as a group one again to accomplish the goal we initially wanted to accomplish. Since the first organization that we had chosen was incorrect, so we had to make the necessary changes to accomplish our goals. The other effective feature is the purpose of the group. Kozier et al (2010) stated that the effective group purpose is when “goal, task, and outcomes are clarified. Understanding and modified so that members of the group can commit themselves to purposes through cooperation” (p.401). For instance, each individual was assign a task and knew what was to be accomplished. As group we all decided to meet at suitable day and time which was beneficial to all team members, because we could commit to the group and focus on what needed to be achieved.
Working in a group can be very difficult at times. Different people with different views may not always agree which one another. Throughout the various task I played the communicator. I made sure everyone was on track on what we wanted to do. I also made sure people was okay and happy in the role they was playing in the group. My group worked together in collecting ideas from one another and making it into one.
