Introduction Although many ancient civilizations impacted modern life today, non influenced us more than ancient Greece. Ancient Greece has a major impact on our technology, and architecture. Chances are you have seen a building with ancient Greek aspects. The invention of the crane along with the increased use of the marble column led the ancient Greeks to create original and magnificent structures we still admire today. Greek architecture has a distinct design of structure and character that make it easily identified.
The Crane History The Crane is a tool invented by the ancient Greeks that allows the movement of heavier objects than the human body can handle. The Greeks at one point invented the winch and pulley. They used ramps as the main means of vertical motion and soon adapted to the crane. Architecture orders Ancient Greece Architecture is based around three orders. An Order in architecture is a certain assemblage of parts subject to uniform established. There are three types of classical orders: The Doric, iconic, and Corinthian orders. The oldest order, the Doric order, is noticeable by the cushion looking object at the top that expands wider than the column and meets the roof. The next order is the iconic order.
