What did it feel like to be in Ancient Rome? How did the Romans live? Ancient Rome was located on central Italy's Tiber River into an empire that at its peak encompassed most of continental Europe, Britain, much of western Asia, northern Africa and the Mediterranean islands. Most of the Romans’ lifestyle were Jobs, Armies, War, Food and Religion. Food- As we all know, the wealthy romans are definitely different to the poor romans. Even if you didn’t know the wealthy would make obvious showings on how rich they are. One way they would show off was by their food. For breakfast, the wealthy would eat a meal called jentaculum. The army had fighting techniques and was fit and disciplined. The army was given weapons so they were protected, and it was also used during wars. The Roman Army was large and needed soldiers. The army was a way for the poorer class to earn a regular wage and to gain some valuable land at the end of their service. It was a good way for the poor to move up in status. In the Third Punic War, the Romans, led by Scipio the Younger, captured and destroyed the city of Carthage in 146 B.C., turning Africa into yet another province of the mighty Roman Empire. The Romans had many wars and battles in order to protect their empire. There were also wars that were fought to gain power. These wars were called the Civil wars. The Great Roman Civil War lasted for four years until Caesar finally defeated Pompey and became Dictator of Rome. From making dishes and cups, to crafting jewelry and weapons for the army, craftsmen were important to the empire. Some craftsmen worked in individual shops and learned a specific craft. Romans were a civilization that originated after the Greek culture. They, like Greeks, saw an extreme significance in the idea of a love for one’s country and loyalty. The Romans, however, were more concerned with public affairs such as education, sanitation, and health. They held a strong connection with their ancestors and wished to imitate what the ancient Romans did. Although Romans rejected the idea of a Rex, or king, they favored the common hero. They wanted a leader who a “regular Joe”, someone who was average and could still led an average life after doing extraordinary things. The Romans also had a very defined government that was broken into consuls, senate, and assembly. There were two consuls who served in place of the king as the leaders of the Roman Empire. Next in succession was the senate, comprised only of patricians who debated and passed legislation. Finally, there was the assembly made for the plebeians to approve laws.
The rich Romans had life good. They often lived outside the city, away from the smells and noise. The beautiful houses you may see in the hills, Thats where they lived. To go along with their commodities, they lived a life of extreme luxury and extravagance. The rich had not only butlers, but maids and slaves, all of whom catered to their masters every wish. This life of luxury wasn’t just shorted there. The rich had a much more broad and expansive and nutritional diet as well. This diet consisted of not only fresh fruit, meat, fish and wheat products such as bread. All of these were fresher than what could be afforded by the poor, as well as most were not capable of having the offer of the meat the rich seemed to enjoy so much. The rich often even enjoyed the sports that some couldn 't afford. The life of luxury that these people lived, was very, situationally accomodating. The ancient Romans had a great civilization and flourished for a long time. They grew a mass amount of healthy crops, were safe from attacks, and traded with other civilizations. But how was all of this possible? The mountains of Rome, Tiber river, and the Mediterranean Sea were all key in ancient Rome. Without these landforms, the ancient Romans couldn’t have survived the harsh life of the ancient civilizations.
The Roman Empire was going strong for hundreds of years. However, in A.D. 476 the last Roman emperor was dethroned. In 1453 Rome finally fell to the Ottoman Turks. There are many different theories on why the empire fell, ranging from invasions to urban decay, and many people say that America is on the same path as Rome. Political, military, economic, and social problems all contributed to the downfall of the Roman Empire. These are also current issues brewing in the United States of America.The American government may need to make many changes in order to keep the country around for a while.
The Romans thought of themselves as a united, simple minded people. They were powerful for many reasons including, their military force and their government system. The ideal Roman citizen was one who held the Roman values, defended themselves and defended the state. The Romans were able to be unified because they were the popular group of that time. Rome is also just located west of the Apennine Mountains, which runs 746 miles across the peninsula of Italy. The Mountains of Italy are the southwest continuation of the Apennine Mountains. Another reference to location is Sicily which is nearly connected to the tip of Italy. In early Rome, they began to live right by the Mediterranean Sea, due to the convenient location they had many advantages some such as being able to fish for their days of work and for food. Their land was also more suitable for farming due to the fact they were near an obvious abundance of water. Then perhaps one of the biggest advantages of this is that they were able to trade efficiently since they could use the Mediterranean Sea as a trade route. Rome has been known to be around for a long time, for this reason it has gotten the name “the eternal city”. It is also considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the entire world. The city of Rome used to be home to one of the most powerful empires in the world as well, the Roman Empire. Throughout history, Rome has created amazing works of art, architecture, and an amazing culture. Simply by walking down the street a tourist is able to see wonderful works of art by many well known artists such as, Michelangelo, Caravaggio and Bernini. One will also be able to few the magnificent buildings that lay within the city. Tourists can also see beautiful masterpieces displayed in art galleries or in the museums scattered throughout the city.

In Ancient Rome, the head of the family was the father, who owned all the property and had control over other members of the property. The father's power was limited and Roman society did not approve of punishing the family without a good cause. Women in Ancient Rome enjoyed many more rights than in Ancient Greece. But still, women had little power (outside the household) and couldn't vote. Children in Ancient Rome were usually educated. From wealthy families, children were sent to nice private schools. Girls usually married at age 14 and boys usually married later. Soon, the Roman social class system changed from just Patricians and Plebeians. There was now a middle class. Business leaders and officials were part of the middle class. Religious beliefs also affected daily life. As the Romans were influenced by other cultures, the gods' they worshipped changed. They believed that gods' could now be in human form. The Roman cities were very crowded. The number of people created many problems and the city center was dirty, noisy, and crowded. Most of the city's population was unemployed and very poor. They had small rooms with no running water or toilets, and dropped their trash outside windows, sometimes injuring people. Poor Romans (or Plebeians) had little to eat, common foods were bread, olives, and fruits, due to their abundance. Fortunately, the government provided free grain to keep the people happy. Wealthy Romans enjoyed their lives of luxury. They spent time going to theaters and enjoying themselves, while they also held very fancy dinner parties. The Romans came up with clever solutions to many of their common problems. They built a sewer system, plumbing systems, and aqueducts. There were also public baths. It all depends on one's perspective because some people may say that a Roman’s daily life was easier and simpler than today's life, and others vice versa. Personally, a Roman’s daily life was much more simpler since everyone was treated and even if you were poor. It was easier to become a citizen in the Roman Empire, and live a decent life that didn’t consist of suffering. Yes, it is true that today there is more freedom when choosing what you can be in life, but in Roman daily life was easier to earn money in ways that were less physically exhausting.
