My father’s coworker and close friend, Andres Acosta, is a production foreman for a company called SM Energy. One of their facilities is located in Catarina, Texas, about 20 miles from his home, Carrizo Springs, Texas. Andres is the oldest amongst his two siblings, one brother and sister. His father was rarely in his life, so he balanced school and help raising his siblings. He provided a great father figure to his siblings, and always watched over them. His character as a supporting person to others developed when he was young, and stuck with him to this day, and believes it is one of the key reasons why he is successful. He graduated Carrizo Springs High School in 2006 with Honors and the Top 10% of his high school class. Andres later attended the University of Texas at Austin, with the intention of pursuing a degree in Computer Science, and …show more content…
Every foreman is assigned to receive individual reports from about 180-220 oil wells, and view their production rates. After viewing these reports, Andres compares approximate numbers that each oil well is projected to produce financially, and compare those numbers to the recent production rates. If a well is not functioning up to the expected progress to meet the set financial goals, it is the foreman’s job to notify the operators to fix the situation. Andres uses a total approximated income number to examine if his whole route is producing on quota. If an oil well is significantly producing more water than oil/natural gas, than the production service of that well should try to be optimized the best they can because SM Energy makes money from selling fossil fuels, not water. All wells require money to be operated, so if a well is not making much money, then it should not be worth investing in if it is not going to make any money in
I am the youngest of 3 with 2 older brothers, Reidland and Bryan. Reidland is the eldest at 31 years of age and Bryan is the middle child at 26 years of age. Reidland graduated from the University of Central Florida with a Doctorate in physical therapy and currently works as a home health physical therapist. In addition to this job he somehow finds the time to lead classes focused on teaching the public lifestyle changes that will improve their overall health as well as treat their chronic illnesses in various locations throughout the country. In his leisure time you can most likely find Reidland in one of five places… Playing golf, playing tennis, on a date night with his wife, spending time with his family or brushing up on his history. The patience, compassion and encouragement of one person improved my family’s last years with its patriarch in countless ways. It was this improvement that inspired me to pursue a career as an
Up until the day I discovered his family’s life I was never able to understand why he always seemed to be pessimistic. Despite all of the obstacles in his way Alexis is in college with me pursuing a better life for himself and his family. His story is one of very few success stories in Barrio Logan. The majority of our friends from middle school either never finished high school, were not eligible to apply to college, or decided not to attend due to a lack of resources. In Barrio Logan the cycle of life and the cycle of poverty go hand in hand. I believe my community along with other disadvantaged communities deserve more, not more than everyone else, but enough to live a dignified life. Education is said to be the great equalizer and I believe in that wholeheartedly. Everyone should have access to a post-secondary education regardless of culture, background, or socioeconomic status. For this reason I am dedicating my life to this cause. There are only a handful of people from my neighborhood with access to the resources and knowledge that I have as a college student. It is my civic duty and moral responsibility to help those in need. Change is being made at the community level, but it must also be made at the systemic
Each person in this world has something they want to accomplish, but wanting to accomplish something is easier said than done. We all face struggles or barriers if you will, that hold us back from our accomplishments, but there are certain qualities or traits that get us where we need to be. A young man named Frankie Jimenez once was an illegal immigrant from Tlaquepaque, Mexico, but he has moved to California with his family in hopes of a better life. He has balanced school and work to support his family and has still managed to get several scholarships that got him into the University of Santa Clara. Although, Frankie is from a low social class, like me, he is hardworking and has a supportive family that has got him where he needed to be.
“My parents raised me to go out and work everyday to the best of your ability. They drove all over for hockey, soccer or lacrosse or any of those things we were doing as kids. But that family support really was something I didn’t understand at the time. My parents were driving an hour and a half or two hours to watch me play in a different city. Looking back I realize how much that means for a kid to have that familiarity with your parents.”
The job of fracking constitutes of gas being released to supply both Australia and overseas countries. Administrators and workers take this process seriously as every cubic foot of gas is measured and supplied. Although potential health problems have been recognized, the companies have been focusing on the collection grid and the and the shortage of regional community employees as only 2% of the workforce is applied for the job. Another economical factor is that Fracking is destroying jobs in other industries. These include manufacturing, tourism and agriculture as well as gas related fields. This caused a major problem in for farmers as they live on rent as well as the decrease of jobs is becoming difficult to maintain that wage. Furthermore, as the natural is supplied throughout the world, citizens must pay double or triple the prices in the upcoming years due to this fracking site.
Luis has been one of the best students in my 16 year career and possibly in the whole history of Irving High School. He is truly one of the finest examples of a well-rounded student that any teacher can ever encounter. As his AP Statistics and AP Calculus BC teacher, I been able to see multiple examples of Luis’s talents and abilities. Even up to this day, Luis does not stop surprising me with his diligence and persistence. Although I’m only his math teacher, I know that Luis has been a highly successful student throughout his high school career in a wide arrange of subjects. From either math, to science, to art, to English, Luis has always risen to the top of the class and performed his best in every activity and test given to him. Luis is one of those few
I will be there for them if they’re ever in a need of help or are distressed. Not only will I support my Hermanos, but I will also take pride in getting involved with the La Unidad Latina in their P.A.T.H.E Initiative, which supports middle school and high school students on their quest to graduate from a four-year university. This is something I have always wanted to do, improve the students’ academically in our community since we are the underprivileged and don’t have access to as many resources as others. But with the P.A.T.H.E Initiative, we will provide access to the youth and assist them on their quest to earn a degree. I will attempt to increase the number of individuals who participate in the P.A.T.H.E Initiative, as well as attempt to hold many more fundraising events that’ll support the Initiative. Lastly, I will help improve the fraternity academically. La Unidad Latina values academics, and with my ambition for education, I feel like I can assist in further improving the members’ success in higher
During her childhood, her parents worked with students learning English as a second language as well as the many thousands of Syrian refugees around where they lived. Work in this area is not only dangerous, but it also takes lots of faith and perseverance to work through the many trials involved with overseas mission work. Currently, her father is out of work as the number of students is low, and he has no students taking his classes. He is currently looking for different work to provide for his family. Work on the mission field, such as theirs, can be extremely difficult and risky, but the reward they will reap from their turbulent times will be worth every tear and every
Ventures develop accordingly of fracking, and this prompts improvement of infrastructure and openings for work for neighborhood residents too. Many individuals are utilized in the businesses to work in various parts of preparing while others are utilized in the infrastructure repairs and improvement. Because of huge populaces, business openings are open, and the individuals who begin them gets independently employed.
I currently work with an at-risk, yet extremely lovely and lively class of high school seniors who are preparing for life after graduation through a system called AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). Our goal is to prepare them for post-secondary education despite their circumstances. I was a participant of this program for all four years of my high school
Not only has fracking supported jobs relative to the drilling company, it has also supported indirect jobs. These jobs, described as “induced” jobs, are other businesses such as restaurants, hotels and retail (Efstathiou). The expansion of jobs in the drilling industry has created a greater demand for other businesses such as restaurants and hotels (Efstathiou). This is because the new dispensable income generated by the workers has allowed the public to afford these conveniences and luxuries (Efstathiou). One of these reasons is because according to Harvard economist Michael Porter, “cheaper natural gas is helping businesses and people all around the country save money” (qtd. in Arnold). According to the IHS report, the “drilling industry will support about 360,000 direct jobs, 537,000 jobs in supplying industries and more than 850,000 jobs outside the industry,” all of which is essential in circulating and stimulating the economy (Efstathiou). Porter believes that the fracking industry is a “game changer," to the economy (qtd. in Arnold). The fracking industry according to Porter
When I was an adolescent, I considered myself to be a shy, introverted person. Growing up, I had always admired my father’s adaptability through obstacles, but it wasn’t until high school that I discovered I had similar qualities of my own. During my sophomore year, my father was brought into the hospital for having five Abdominal Hernias as well as Hypertension, he was immediately brought into surgery and remained at the hospital for weeks. Each day, I visited my father at the hospital for hours and took care of my father's work at home. I also maintained my performance and reputation at school, balancing my many rigorous courses, as well as my multifarious extracurricular activities.
Twenty-four years ago, my dad boarded a one-way flight to the U.S. He was coming to a new country filled with vocational opportunities his homeland could not provide. He was not limited by his place of birth or the reality that no one else in his family had ever left their village. He trusted his gut and took a leap of faith. A year later he called for my mother and I to join him in the U.S. and we left our life in Kenya and my future was ultimately changed. Throughout my life, I have been keenly aware that had my father limited himself to only opportunities that he could see, I would have never even been able to consider opportunities such as the UNC Medical Center Administrative Fellowship.
My father came from a family of very little money. His parents were divorced when he was nine years old. Culturally, he was raised by both parents separately. His mother was a single mom putting herself through nursing school. My father is the oldest child of 4, and often took on adult responsibilities. Their status was considered lower class; however, their outlook was very giving and self-less. They were appreciative for everything they had, because they knew how hard it was to obtain. My father’s side is very outgoing, hardworking and independent. They remain humble, and are very well-rounded members of society.
