Case Study Two – Andres Serrano Andres Serrano’s work created a responses from religious leaders and the public in the United States and abroad. The New York based artist created a controversial image in 1989, when he placed a small crucifix in a jar of his own urine and then photographed it (Dubin 1992, 96). The title of the image is “Piss Christ” and it gives the audience a description of what is being viewed. This forty inch by sixty inch image was one of a series of eight photographs that were part of the “Awards in the Visual Arts” competition sponsored by the Southeastern Center for the Contemporary Art (SECCA) in North Carolina (Dubin 1992, 97). The juried event awarded Serrano with a fifteen-thousand dollar prize which was funded …show more content…
Serrano appreciated the abstraction that bodily fluids created in the images but then he also experimented with the new meaning the images would take as the viewer realized what they were looking at (Dubin 1992, 98). Serrano also relies on the religious imagery of this Catholic upbringing. Regardless of the artist’s intent or background, Serrano’s work came under attack. Religious organizations not only protested the work but ultimately began attacking the funding of the work by The National Endowment of the Arts (Choi 2002, 12). Although the National Endowment of the Arts had no control over the artist’s work, the conservative politicians threatened to punish the agency by cutting funds. This attack has consequences on the National Endowment of the Arts and restricts the agency’s ability to create art experiences and exposure for the public. Ultimately, laws were created that prevented the funding of art deemed as obscene or lacking artistic merit and value (Dubin 1992, 100). A major flaw of this requirement is its vagueness of the terms being defined. This is even harder to define because of the gap between the “art world and the general public (Dubin 1992, 101).” The …show more content…
Serrano has received praise for his work and some even call it beautiful. Artists express their vision to different audiences and gain different responses. Those responses add meaning to the art. Just as artists are entitled to create their vision, those offended are entitled to be offended and defend their beliefs. In addition, those that are offended could simply just not support that artist by not attending their shows. This does not mean, that they have to stop others from viewing the work. There is a place for all types of artwork, just as there is a place for all people. Blasphemy should not be considered a crime because there are so many types of religions and what may be considered blasphemous to one group, may not be to another. It is difficult to define and it can lead to infringing on freedom of expression rights. There are many visions in the world and everyone is entitled to their vision. Art does not always have to be pleasant either. It should produce a response from the audience and stimulate the senses. With so many different viewpoints and agendas, controversy cannot be avoided. Maintaining freedom of expression rights will continue to allow artists the freedom to express their vision although it will continuously be
We are also shown how these different forms of art change over time and how different cultures have adopted them and used them as their own form of art to express emotion, love, creativity, and passion. This book teaches us how art is viewed in different ways by the church and was very informative for me to obtain a better and deeper understanding of art and how the churches valued it.
The National Foundation on the Arts and Humanities Act of 1965 states that it is up to the Federal Government to assist the local, state, regional and private agencies and artist in developing arts in the communities in several different ways. It also states that the Federal Government is to encourage freedom of thought, imagination, and inquiry but also the material conditions facilitating the release of this creative talent. Lastly, the Act states that it is to fulfill an educational mission and make widely available the greatest achievements of art “National Foundation on the Arts and Humanities Act of 1965”).
The grants that are given to artist helps them create unique pieces of work, creating a light upon controversial subjects being hidden in the dark. A controversial piece of art that has gotten huge amounts of attention is “Chris Ofili’s “Holy Virgin Mary” a representation of the Virgin Mary with elephant dung on her breast”, it offended may religious people across the U.S (David). Ofili’s reasoning to creating this certain piece of work was to attract attention and starting conversations about the current health of politics, religion, and Pop culture. This creation brought so much disgust by a catholic named Rudolph W. Giuliani who in addition is the Mayor of New York tried to cancel NEA funding to the museum showcasing Ofili’s art. This action made by the Mayor was so controversial that it went all the way to the Supreme
What the Los Angeles respond was not so bad but they still had the right to protect his mural. But I agree and disagree with there respond. I disagree with it because they still had the right to protect it because it took him hard work to do it and . I also agree with there respond because they paid him to do it and know thats theres not his. He was paid to do it so he shouldn't worry about how they tagged over the
Throughout his time as a muralist, Rivera's style had changed. From Mexico's pragmatic, pre-Colombian work – to digest and abstract innovation [modernism] learned over in Europe. Rivera's distinctive style was his aced masterpiece and in addition, an expansive worry for quality/texture, and his vivid, and vibrant differentiating colors. In any case, regardless of his style, Rivera dependably figured out how to join either his political perspectives and viewpoints or his Mexican foundation in his work, regardless of whether his political perspectives were quite controversial – to the point of which it sparks uproar(s) or riot and grating condemnation around the globe. Rivera's significance was incredible, and not simply to America, but rather to numerous other world nations as well.
Art by its nature is a subject of the philosophical, social, economic, political or religious context surrounding its creator. More often than not, a work of art addresses a specific topic or somewhat revolves around a particular person. Therefore, it is impossible to separate the context of a piece of painting, either historical or cultural, to its intrinsic value or the artwork's meaning. On the other hand, different cultures and time utilized specific conventions that govern the representation of objects of creativity. This essay highlights various pieces of art and their relationship to particular cultural, political, economic, or social settings. Moreover, it pinpoints how different times influence art presentation.
One friend of a victim, Eric Fischl, chose to create a sculpture entitled, “The Tumbling Woman”, to express his grief. He faced a harsh response, and his piece was was exhibited for only a week before it too was censored. Despite this, one wife of a victim, upon seeing the Tumbling Woman figure, expressed that the creator Fischl, “Had the right to create and exhibit it.” (Junod) Junod showed how valuable having access to these images truly was when he discusses one mother’s personal choice.
There were numerous of ethical issues that caused an outrage amid this time. For instance, It was an insult to the public, a sensitive subject. At the point when the work was displayed, it distressed the victims families and they requested the portrait to be excluded from the exhibition,
Most people may not know who Chris Ofili is, but chances are that many of them know one of his works, his painting “The Holy Virgin Mary”, displayed at the Brooklyn Museum of Art’s “Sensation” exhibition in 1999. The painting was extremely controversial because of Mary’s exposed breast being made of elephant dung and because of the porno cutouts surrounding Mary. Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and others, saying that such works were not appropriate for public display, immediately attacked the painting, along with the entire showcase of art by different artists. These sharp criticisms were an extreme injustice, condemning the work “The Holy Virgin Mary” based on prejudiced views of what is and what is not
I think that Serrano honestly saw this work as something innocent or as just a way to express his feeling regarding what Christ went through not really thinking that it was going to offend anybody. On the other hand, I think people saw Serrano’s work as form of disrespect towards religion and/or their faith and had a issue with it. I feel that regardless what people’s intentions are there will always be disagreements as we all have different opinion and interpretation of things even when one is sincere about it.
He is a contemporary artist best known for subverting the meaning behind religious symbolism by juxtaposing them against popular icons (Chagoya, Enrique). He juxtaposes these types of symbols to address the ongoing cultural clashes between the United States, Latin America, and the world in general. The inclusion of pop icons is meant to seem shallow so that analysis of the piece in question will open to deeper conversations. His most recent pieces of art address issues on immigration and the economic recession.
To conclude, this nude figure reflects the Bay Area Figurative Movement, through Neri’s selection of subject form, exemplified in a plastered female sculpture. His use of splattered colors all throughout
Who is to say a work of art is good or bad? But the underlying issue is whether or not the government funding should be restricted. One of the most thought-provoking concepts and quite possibly the answer to the problem is the idea supported by Douglas's statement: "Restriction of free thought and free speech is the most dangerous of all subversions" (14).
Since Arts is a form for people to express feelings and visualize their idea, it should be individual and personal. Hence, creativity is one the most essential elements during making artworks. Unfortunately, the censorship of Art still exists worldwide and the situation is severe. It not only obstructs the creativity of artist that poses a threat to the development in Art industry, but also exploits the right of the viewers to see the artworks. For instance, the censorship on Art that comes from political reasons, which may affect the freedom of speech and human right in the countries. The public concern for personal safety and human rights of the artists is needed. Also, it is essential for citizens to have a proper attitude of viewing the artwork. Hence, education is an important way for children and teenagers to build up a correct manner to appreciate the artwork that may contain sensitive
For over two thousand years, various philosophers have questioned the influence of art in our society. They have used abstract reasoning, human emotions, and logic to go beyond this world in the search for answers about arts' existence. For philosophers, art was not viewed for its own beauty, but rather for the question of how art and artists can help make our society more stable for the next generation. Plato, a Greek philosopher who lived during 420-348 B.C. in Athens, and Aristotle, Plato’s student who argued against his beliefs, have no exceptions to the steps they had to take in order to understand the purpose of art and artists. Though these two philosophers made marvelous discoveries about the existence of art, artists, and
