Animal testing is when cruel and harmful experiments are done on innocent animals for specific reasons such as saving human lives. In animal testing, they take these innocent little animals and run horrible,cruel, and graphic test on them. "An estimated 26 million animals are used every year in the United States for scientific and commercial testing." (Humane Society International n.p.). Within the European Union, over 12 million animals are used for animal testing yearly. Over 3 million of these laboratory rabbits were used in Great Britain. In 2014, around 834,453 animals total were used for laboratory testing in the United States; 18% (150,344) of the animals tested on were rabbits. With this information at hand, we can see that rabbits are commonly used in different laboratories around the world. This paper will be going over the treatment of these animals in average facilities and the impact these animals have on our society.

Just in the United States, “there are about 26 million different species, from dogs to birds, being used every year for medical and science related testing” (“Animals in Science / Research”). Throughout the process of testing, “monkeys are addicted to drugs, cats are deafened and have holes drilled into their skulls, sheep and pigs have their skin burned off, and rats have their spinal cords crushed” (“Animals in Medical Experiments”). As a result, animals face cruel conditions and have no way of fighting back. Although medical testings on animals may cure the deadliest diseases such as cancer and tuberculosis, the abuse and mistreatment these animals face while testing medicines should be deemed inhumane, and such practices should be banned in the United States.

Most decent people believe in fairness, equality and doing the right thing. Then there are those individuals who are corrupt and immoral? As human beings, the world would be a better place if our society made a conscious effort to conduct themselves honourably and ethically. Is killing animals morally right? Millions of living creatures that experience pain just as much as humans are suffering unnecessarily for cosmetic research. How can society allow this to happen to other living creatures? I believe that new medical procedures and breakthroughs should not be tried on animals first. I believe this because of animal cruelty laws, and because you could find ways around the issue. Also you should not have to do much biological testing in the first place, simply because of what type of research you are doing, more research may be required by different studies, and there are better alternatives. Some empathy is also required to see this point, but it also would be rather horrible to be locked in a cage, being injected with certain things, that may cause a slow, painful death, from cancer or another disease. The practice of animal testing has been a contentious topic for many years and the debate on the subject seems never ending. There are pros and cons, both of which have well thought out points. Many people support the act of animal testing, however many are against it. I, for one, am opposed to animal testing and have been for years. I am a lover of animals, as many people are, and this topic has always bothered me. There is no doubt in my mind that this cruel, inhumane action is wrong, but many Americans and others around the world think otherwise. Animal testing for cosmetic products and substances should be banned completely because of the cruelty the animals encounter during the experiments. The animals that are being used for testing are being contained in crowded cages in an unnatural habitat. They don’t get the freedom to experience fresh air or sunshine because of the condition they are kept in everyday. This restrains the animals from doing what they coexist to do naturally. Currently, there are millions of rats, cats, dogs, rabbits, and many other animals that are trapped inside cages in labs around the country. They suffer badly as their bodies ache and they are lonely and long to be free. These animals hope that one day they will be set free as they must wait in fear for the next experimentation to begin. The conditions the animals are put through are harsh and usually cause the organism to have strange behaviours such as pulling out their hair or biting at their own skin. They are so scared that every time someone walks by, they jump, scared to death that it's their turn to be tortured. Even after going through these many situations, most of these animals end up dead. Animal testing is extremely immoral and unethical as it causes the suffering of animals when in fact, the results are almost always inaccurate killing millions of animals. Most of the animals that are put in the test almost never show accurate results. As well, there are many other alternatives that can be used instead of the murder of all these living organisms that have done nothing to deserve it. These efforts are usually less expensive and don’t occur at the cost of a living organism. Therefore, due to animal rights and ethical issues, alternative methods, and the unreliability of test results in humans, animal testing must be prohibited for use in today’s research, treatments and products.

Each year there are more than 100 million animals used for experimentation in the United States (Experiments on Animals: Overview). These animals are subjected to appalling conditions during the research period. They are locked up in cramped quarters, denied basic rights, and forced into agonizing experimentation; often times with little prevail, for the benefit of humans. Animal experimentation should be stopped because not only is it morally wrong, but also the results are typically inaccurate and it could be replaced by alternative methods.

Anti-testing activists deem these unnecessary and consider them to be cruel. “Fourteen million animals are used currently in the U.S. to test toxicity and irritancy of cosmetics and household products” (Hannah). Many new forms of safety tests are being developed by companies to save money along with the lives of innocent animals.
