She starts out just telling about King Cole and how they were a strong family, her Reba and him until he died. And Mr. Leeland is no help, he loses money by gambling, The next event is when they lose their house and then they move to Chicago to make a fresh start the author adds the event that Sugar and her dog Shush get put into foster care. Then the author adds more events in a orderly way to make the last event end where they are making their way through all the tough times. “ You go out there, Miss Sugar, and show’em what it means to be sweet. “ Thats what it says on the last page it is telling us how the author ends the book and the last event with how if Sugar is sweet she can make everything work.

It begins with the dramatic line "Everybody hates me." The author then proceeds to take us on a journey written in the first person from the point-of-view of Tao Symonds, the eleven year old narrator and central character, as he reflects on the previous few months of his life. Tao thinks the whole world is against him. He is suffering pressure from school, his parents and their new partners, as well as from his peers to join in theirescapades and to top it all off, his dog has died. Tao feels confused and angry because his parents, middle aged surfer father, Greg, and his mother, a teacher called Christine, are in the process of a break-up. Tao then lists his troubles and tells the reader of his present dread as he is taken by his mother

She is extremely effective in supporting her main idea by supplying the reader with descriptive detail on how she grew up and how certain things took place in rural North Carolina during the 1960’s. These details grasp the reader’s attention immediately by implementing such detail that while reading the words on each page, a visual picture can be envisioned by the reader.

The theme of the story is under some circumstances people can be blind to the truth. Character Edie determines the style of the story by talking about the circumstances of her life as a fifteen year old girl and as an older woman. She retells the stories of those that she has known, and the man that she believed she loved deeply. Sometimes the things we want to happen may not be the things that life has for us. We need to be open to all the opportunities in life that are different from what we believe.

The scorching heat of the summer day in Stamps, Arkansas made the dusty roads and cross tracks have mirages. It was a slow moving town otherwise, in my opinion. He was in complete denial. For some reason he thought that if his son cannot hear that makes him stupid and a retard. Witch I found appalling. That a father could say such a thing about his own son just because he was different and could possibly have a disability. Throughout most of the book his father has a hard time excepting that his son has a problem. At one part he practically disowns his whole family. His business was having a big corporate business and his wife and son were there and one of the employees were explaining to someone else how his son was deaf and that his son is probably not going to be able to take over the family business, Mr. Clines pulls the man to the side and tells him as far as the business people know he has no family, no wife and no son which how could a father say that.

This book was a great book with the theme of having an aha moment and changing your life forever. Throughout the book, it talks about the awakening moment in your life. This moment is when you know you need to change something in your life. Also, it talks about honesty and how you need to be honest with yourself.
