The cultural rebirth that occurred in Europe from the 14th century through mid-1600s was called the Renaissance based on the rediscovery of the literature of Greece and Rome. The Reformation occurred, modern times are often considered to have begun with the Renaissance. Some major figures were Galileo, Shakespeare, da Vinci, and Michelangelo. The Hundred Years' War was a series of conflicts waged from 1337 to 1453 by the House of Plantagenet, rulers of the Kingdom of England, against the House of Valois, rulers of the Kingdom of France, over the succession to the French throne. Once this war was over people were able to travel without having an immediate threat because no one was roaming the sea.
