It was a summer morning and I boarded the bus alone for the first time. I was not on the school bus, but rather the RTA. I was one of the first people on the bus, and I sat in a comfortable blue seat halfway down the center aisle. My first RTA experiences started when I was a young boy, with my parents of course, but this past summer I rode alone on my way to Saint Ignatius High School for a summer camp. I learned how to navigate the city of Cleveland and how to use the convenient public transportation that Cleveland offers. When some of my friends and family heard that I was riding inner-city public transportation their reactions were concerned, surprised, and sometimes even appalled. It is a safe and reliable source of travel. There are many people who refuse to ride or refuse to let their children ride. It is very important to realize that, yes, there will be bad people, but for every bad person there's always at least one good person who is willing to help. I've had many experiences on the RTA and even ridden public transportation in other countries, and I think the biased opinion that public transportation is unsafe is an unfair description even after this most recent experience. For some reason people worry about those intimidating figures on public transportation when they're just as large of a threat anywhere else. There are aggressive citizens everywhere, but there are also citizens who are willing to assist. Unfortunately, sometimes people only see and remember those few intrusive ones when they are downtown or in an urban setting and then form false opinions about an entire group of people. We need to realize that people in urban areas even if they may be homeless, without work, or just less fortunate than we are, are not all intrusive and threatening. These people are just as human as we are and it is irrational to think that they are less than we
