Gun Laws in America
Guns, the weapon of choice for some of the most horrendous slaughterings in America.. Since early history guns have been used mainly for military and defensive purposes. But, over the years the development gun technology has made firearms more attainable and deadly. America has the highest amount of gun related deaths each year in the world. “In Germany 381, in France 255, in Canada 165 in the United Kingdom 68, in Australia 65, in Japan 39 and in the United States, 11,127” (Moore Michael, 51:15-51:48). Even though the second amendment does gives the right to bear arms, I believe guns should be controlled and overseen by the government to a certain extent because guns have caused a lot of killings in America and have increased

As stated by the states attorney’s office report, Dylan got in the school at 9:30 a.m and shot the principal and the school’s psychologist that were in the hallway. He then moved to classrooms where children were learning and started shooting and by 9:40 AM, just ten minutes later, he took the lives of twenty six people, including twenty children age twelve and below and six adults, before taking his own life (State Report on Sandy Hook Elementary shooting). Since the sandy Hook elementary shooting according to Ryan Mark writer for Vox, there have been 1,552 more mass killings to date. Including two of the biggest mass shooting in American history. Which are the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando and the Harvest Music Festival shooting in Las Vegas. On June 12, 2016 Omar Saddiqui Mateen, 29, opened fire inside the nightclub, a gay nightclub. At least 49 people were killed and more than 50 were injured. Police ended up shooting and killing Mateen as they were freeing hostages he was holding at the club. On October 1, 2017, a gunman, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, who allegedly had mental illness issues, fired from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on a crowd of more than 20,000 gathered on the Las Vegas Strip for the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival. He killed 58 people and injured more than 500. It is the deadliest
Gun control in the United States has been a hot debate for years. In the year 2015 there were 372 mass shootings in the United States ( (Rienzi, 2016), sparking even more debate. 22% of Americans own firearms (Rienzi, 2016) and firmly believe in the second amendment of the constitution. Surely, an agreement on gun law reform can be met while also protecting the second amendment. Right?
Republicans are eager to shut down this Colorado gun bill. Here’s why their dream could backfire big time.
After Grisez threatened that stranger, he immediately left. Soon after, her neighbors went to a local gun shop and bought each family a pistol. They promise when one family is not at home, others will help watch over their house. If anyone faces an emergency, others will give hands. Grisez 's two sons, Jack and Michael, have now developed a new hobby to watch over their neighbors' houses (Wright).
In light of recent events, you'd think that people in the United States would be scrambling to put a gun control law in place. But of course not! Conservatives are still stuck on the fact that it's a violation of their rights. I don't know about them, but I think being killed is a worse violation of my rights than not being able to own a gun. This is what I found most interesting this week.
In Middleton, Idaho a toddler accidentally shot an infant in the face with a loaded handgun Monday afternoon. Investigators say the 10-month-old and 3-year-old were in a vehicle and were temporarily left unattended. Police say the toddler found a loaded handgun in the vehicle and unintentionally fired the weapon on the 10-month-old child’s cheek. While this story is shocking, gun deaths are pretty common. In 2010 unintentional firearm injuries caused the deaths of around 606 people (not including intentional), (kboi2.com). Statistics say that 32,000 deaths are gun-related per year in the United States. Gun control has become an aspect of the political world that is constantly changing based on how gun rights activists and gun control supporters argue and provide for sufficient reasoning for their cause. Two recent ads, one which shows a picture of a gun, and another that uses a picture of two children, one holding a book and the other, holding a gun. Both convey a powerful message, but ultimately the second is more effective, due to its comparison between the importance of safety.
A major topic that has been largely controversial for quite some time is stricter regulations on firearms. Some legislature and politicians are pressing for stricter laws governing firearms and are insistent on restricting American civilians from even bearing firearms completely. Some others are pro-gun promoting our 2nd amendment right to bear arms. Many of these anti-gun representatives believe the eradication of firearms altogether will bring an end to the incidents such as the tragic mass shootings on movie theaters, military installations, and most recently, school campuses. Will banning firearms really solve our current situation or is it a temporary solution to a permanent problem that will have the same effect
Christa Engles was the mother of two young children. In 2014, her older 3 year old son had found a semiautomatic weapon hidden underneath the couch and shot his mother who was changing the diaper of his 1 year old younger sister. With unbelieving eyes, the toddler stood by his mother and continuously repeated two words: Mommy shot. By the time his grandmother had arrived, both of the children were covered with blood, mentally and physically (Holloway). This type of accidental shooting is no longer an exclusive tragedy. In 2015, there was a daunting total of 1,958 accidents similar to the death of Engles (“Gun Violence Archive 2015”). During the first four months of 2016, there have already been 656 accidental deaths. (“Gun Violence Archive
Firearms are the cause of death for more than 31,000 people per year, making it the 2nd leading cause of death for people ages 15-24 (National Center for Injury Control and Prevention). As the debate over gun control continues to spread throughout the nation like the plague, everyone is trying to choose a side. Some argue that their Second Amendment Rights are being infringed on, however, when looked at in detail that is not the case. Many others argue the regulation of guns is not beneficial because criminals are okay with doing illegal things, therefore they will obtain guns anyway. There is much, however, to disprove that. These weapons are the reason why the United States has such a high rate of violence even with such high wealth. Criminals should not have the access they currently have to such destructive weapons. Gun control must be put in place in order to decrease much of the violence and death by firarem that the United States has.
Science fiction author Robert Heinlein once said “"An armed society is a polite society." While, Heinlein may have been a science fiction author, modern American society has always had a fascination and love of guns. Gun rights activists frequently use the Second Amendment in their defense of gun rights which states “A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” However, in the wake of an increase in violent gun crimes many areas have sought to ban certain types of guns. This dispute was at the center of the Supreme Court Case, District of Columbia v. Heller which ignited a fire storm over whether the District of Columbia had the right to ban
One issue that is important to me today is gun control. I believe that currently there needs to be more regulation on the issue, but i also fully support the Second Amendment, which states that it is the right of the people to keep and bear arms. To improve gun regulation background checks must be thorough to keep guns out of the hands of violent and mentally unstable people. After purchasing a firearm people should also have to undergo training on how to use firearms, as well as how to store and clean them. This would ensure that owners lock their guns up and are knowledgeable enough not to misuse their weapons. Another issue that is important to me today is education reform, which in light of the failure of common core much also change. While
There are many issues that Democrats and Republicans vigorously debate on a day to day basis. However, there is one political issues that has been showing up in recent news repetitively, the topic of gun control. The issue has been heightened in recent years by events such as the Sandy Hook shooting, Washington Navy Ship Yard shooting, and the Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooting . Both political parties have no desire to ban guns all together, however the feverish debate lies in the type of guns that are legal for the common citizen to own. The Democratic Party wants to inhibit large magazine weapons while the Republican Party wishes to keep these high capacity weapons available for the common citizen . Interest groups are also lobbying heavily on
With all these mass shootings happening recently in our country it has brought up a huge discussion on if guns should be legal or not. My view on guns is if you have a clean history and no mental illness issues I have nothing wrong with someone owning a gun. Therefore I am for guns for self defense and hunting. I think having a gun is a huge responsibility and you shouldn’t be able to have any history of being a criminal or have a history of having a mental illness even to the slightest degree. These mass shooters I 100% think that they had a mental illness and sent them over the edge because I don’t know how anyone in the right mind could do a crime as big as killing hundreds of innocent people for no reason.
Everyday, politicians and leaders of America are faced with many challenges that could potentially alter anyone’s quality of life, but a few are as urgent as gun violence. Gun control is a controversial topic in American politics because the Second Amendment is relatively vague. More often than not, gun advocates utilize the amendment; “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed,” to guarantee their right to own a firearm and argue against gun control policies.
“The second amendment of The United States Bill of Rights is my concealed weapons permit, period.”- Ted Nugent. Saving lives one by one starts with limiting the purchase, sale, and use of guns in America. According to Alexander Lee, the political and social debate over the question of how much gun control is appropriate and it has been regularly discussed within the last decade. Shootings such as Sandy Hook, and Tucson shootings have raised the government’s awareness on guns and possible restrictions and regulations. Gun talks are discussed with the question, “Will controlling guns cut back on violent crime rates?” Although many guns are open to be sold to the public over 18, there are traditional gun laws that limit who can own them. These laws include sell restrictions to the mentally disabled, the age in which you can obtain a gun, background checks, and dishonorably discharged military personnel. Gun control laws could have a positive effect in America by reducing homicide rates, but at the same time, citizens still have the right to bear arms under the second amendment under the U.S constitution. Gun control laws do not mean the absolute confiscation of guns, but rather reduce the amount of power a gun and the amount of ammo that a gun can hold.
Gun control in the United States is a very controversial topic in today’s political society, leaving the nation divided into two sides with two strongly opinionated beliefs. This all started with the increase in the amount of mass shootings and an overall increase in gun violence. The two sides consist of the liberal point of view and the conservative point of view. The liberals believe that the availability of firearms to the people in the country is a major issue, and that the U.S. government is at fault for the mass shootings due to the lenient regulations on guns. In retaliation, the conservatives argue that having a gun is a God given right, that the Second Amendment of The Constitution. Although the availability of guns is seen to be
