The right to choose versus the right of life has always been debated in America and historically there has been many change in the government’s opinion on abortion. In 1873 the Comstock Laws were passed making abortions illegal, but 100 years later the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade case established that abortions were allowed on a federal level during the first trimester. Whatever the policy was or will be is not going to change people’s opinions on abortions or stop them from happening. Pro-life advocates argue that mainly, abortion is murder of a human being. Other arguments for pro-life include that abortion will be taken advantage of and used as a regular form of birth control, sex should be used for procreation only (religious views), and that adoption is very accepted and is a great alternative if a woman is not ready to be a mother. On the other hand, pro-choicers have many arguments, most prominently being that a woman should be able to do whatever she wants with her body and make choices for herself. Adding on to their arguments are that children should be born into loving homes where they are wanted and cared for, where the child will not be abused or born into poverty, and the idea of being able to choose empowers women and promotes gender equality. In my opinion, abortions are not moral, should be illegal, and the government should not fund abortion clinics with taxpayer’s money. The main reasons for this is that a fetus is a person and life begins at conception,
Many people base their opinion on if abortion is wrong is based off the opinion of when a person feels that life has begun. Many women who discover that they will be having a baby soon become really happy about the idea. Also, some who get abortions feel that pregnancy is nothing more than an inconvenience. Sometimes this inconvenience is sought to be an issue that can easily be resolved such as adoption or abortion methods. There are also times where conflicting issues create consideration about if the baby should be kept.
On January 22, 1973, the United States Supreme Court ruled, in a 7-2 decision, on the Roe vs. Wade case legalizing abortion. Since the legalization of abortion in 1973, there have been approximately 60 million abortions within the United States. The Roe vs. Wade ruling sparked a controversial debate that has lasted for over 40 years. People that are pro-choice believe that abortion should be legal and that it is ultimately the mother’s decision. The opposite of pro-choice is pro-life. People that associate with this stance believe that abortion is wrong and any life, whether born or unborn, should be protected. Over the years, there have been several arguments established both for and against abortion. Three strong arguments of pro-life are that life begins at conception, there are harmful mental effects of abortion, and there are flaws to the Roe vs. Wade final ruling.
Many people have wondered why abortion is legal, resulting in many riots. EC Duckworth expands on this very idea, during the 1960’s and the beginning of the 1970’s, the United States began to annul the ban on abortion. In 1973, Roe v. Wade, the United States Supreme Court argued that the bans on abortion were unconstitutional for every state. That made it legalized throughout the United States, but why was it legalized? This is a question that has stumped millions and millions of people. (Duckworth)
Abortion is the most disputed argument in the United States dividing its people nationwide. To clarify abortion is legal in the United States. There is rallys marching annually for abortion to be banned. My objective is to stop pro-life crowds harassing women outside plan parenthoods. I will be discussing pro-choice arguments and counterarguments to those of the pro-life views. In addition i will include Judith Thomson's violinist analogy and john Hospers libertarianism views and how this proves my argument in how abortion is morally permissible.
An unplanned pregnancy can be either the most marvelous thing in a person’s life or it can be the worst. For those that decide that this unplanned pregnancy is unwanted, most decide to get an abortion. “Currently, there are about 1.2 million abortions that are performed each year in the United States” (Trupin 1). Think about how much more populated the United States would be if it wasn’t for all these abortions? “An abortion is a medical or surgical procedure that deliberately ends a pregnancy before an embryo or fetus is born” (“Abortion”). Abortion can be and is a very touchy topic to most people. That’s why it isn’t allowed to be the topic of discussion in schools, churches, or even a place of business.
Abortion has always been an incredibly controversial topic. It has been one of the most widely discussed issues in the American culture for decades. Abortion is a discussion of human interaction, in which emotions, ethics, and law all come together. In many cases, people on both sides of the argument have valid points and take moral positions. A pro-choice position would assert that the decision to terminate a pregnancy lies the mother and that the government has no right to interfere or step in and make that decision. On the other hand, the position of pro-life advocates argue that life begins at the moment of conception. They believe that because the embryo or fetus is a human life and that one has no moral right to abort it. This theory argues that this human has no power or say in the matter and is rendered helpless from advocating for itself. Although abortion is a morally and emotionally charged issues, it is ultimately protected under the 14th amendment. The most common reasons for abortion include but are not limited to, teen pregnancy, rape, and health issues.
However, the other forty percent of people in the United States believe that teens should never have an abortion. Not only does it kill the innocent life of a child, but it also hurts the teen involved. Several studies of women after they have had an abortion have shown that “between 40 and 60 percent of women questioned report negative reactions. Within 8 weeks after their abortions, 55 percent expressed guilt, 44 percent complained of nervous disorders, 36 percent had experienced sleep disturbances, 31 percent had regrets about their decision, and 11 percent had been prescribed psychotropic medicine by their family doctor.” (http://www.iowartl.org/get-
Thesis: It is moral to have an abortion because of the three reasons: it’s the women right to choose, it brings the happiness for the mother in case of forced sexual activity and if the fetus is severely ill.
Abortion in America is a controversial issue in which both sides have valid arguments. But, the arguments can be refuted. Abortion is the ending of pregnancy and expulsion of the embryo or fetus, generally before the embryo or fetus is capable of surviving on its own. Abortion should be illegal for a number of reasons.
Abortion is the terminating of a pregnancy from the death and removal of an embryo or fetus from the uterus. One of the major topics in our culture right now is over abortion. Women and men are arguing over this issue, when it shouldn’t even be a topic to argue about. In the essay “Resistance to Civil Government,” Henry David Thoreau argues against the government’s right to compel individual citizens to violate their consciences. The law that allows the murdering of human beings is a law that fully violates my conscience. The definition of abortion in dictionaries is the terminating of a pregnancy- but in all reality, it is the terminating of a human life.
Imagine ending a pure innocent human's life, well this is what happens in abortion. It takes lives of 125,000 babies per day and in the USA alone over 3000 per day. Abortion will always be a controversial topic globally because both sides believe they are correct. I like to think people just lack information on the subject or aren't correctly educated in the subject of abortion. Many fail to recognize the fact that life begins the moment of conception, but what we can all agree on, is that abortion is the termination of pregnancy.
As a sophomore, you are used to getting texts asking about what homework is due tomorrow. I never expected to get a text from my best friend saying she was pregnant and scared because she did not know what to do. I grew up in the catholic faith, and pre marital sex is not accepted, and abortion was blasphemy towards life. But my best friend grew up in a pro choice family, and later told me that she received an abortion. I was confused about her choice and how it was legal for her to do it. I was not sure how the law was back then when I was a sophomore, but in the state of Texas on January 24, 2017, SB 8 amended Texas law regarding certain prohibited abortions and the treatment and disposition of a human fetus, human fetal
Abortions are one of the many things that everyone has an opinion on. As defined by the 2012 Merriam-Webster dictionary,
Abortion is a medical procedure to deliberately terminate a pregnancy. There are many different reasons women choose to have an abortion. Some of these reasons include medical conditions and/or personal situations. Abortion should be legally practiced because of situations of inadequacy, stem cell research potential, and rape situations.
Abortion is one of the most debatable and controversial issues that exist today in our society. Abortion is the ending of a pregnancy by removing a fetus or embryo before it can survive outside the uterus. Over 205 million women get pregnant per year worldwide, over a third of those pregnancies are unintended and a fifth end in abortion. Women should be able to get abortions because the procedures are legal; also there are minimal physical side effects, and on the other side of the argument people mainly disagree with abortion because of religious reasons.
