Abortion has always been an incredibly controversial topic. It has been one of the most widely discussed issues in the American culture for decades. Abortion is a discussion of human interaction, in which emotions, ethics, and law all come together. In many cases, people on both sides of the argument have valid points and take moral positions. A pro-choice position would assert that the decision to terminate a pregnancy lies the mother and that the government has no right to interfere or step in and make that decision. On the other hand, the position of pro-life advocates argue that life begins at the moment of conception. They believe that because the embryo or fetus is a human life and that one has no moral right to abort it. This theory argues that this human has no power or say in the matter and is rendered helpless from advocating for itself. Although abortion is a morally and emotionally charged issues, it is ultimately protected under the 14th amendment. The most common reasons for abortion include but are not limited to, teen pregnancy, rape, and health issues. Rape is one of the most prominent possibilities as to why a woman would choose to terminate her pregnancy. Though it is a tough decision to make, it is possible to be faced with keeping the child or ending the life of the fetus. In some cases, women make the choice to end their pregnancy knowing how they might treat their child. The women is most likely to hate her rapist and may worry if they move forward with the pregnancy, they would project this hate onto the child because it reminds them of such a painful memory.According to Rachel Perry, “One percent of women in a cross-sectional study of women's reasons for choosing abortion reported that their pregnancy had resulted from rape” (67-73). In addition to the pregnancy, the health consequences of rape can include physical injury, sexually transmitted disease, and mental health problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse. There are many ways of coping with the effects of rape, and “with some studies suggesting rape may result in higher rates of pregnancy than consensual intercourse” (Wikipedia). Another big issue leading to the decision to terminate a fetus is
Abortion is a very sensitive and controversial topic. There are people who believe that abortion should be a right and a woman should be able to decide whether to terminate her pregnancy. Persons with this perspective are pro-choice. However, there are others who believe that abortion is not a right and a woman should not be able to terminate a pregnancy just because she doesn’t want to have a baby. People with that view are pro-life. Because abortion is a debatable issue and has these two perspectives linked to it, we can group arguments used to support either perspective into categories of pros and cons. Three pros of this topic are; ‘A baby should not come into the world unwanted’, ‘Abortion is a justified means of population control’, and ‘The US Supreme Court has declared abortion to be a fundamental right’. Whereas three cons are; ‘Abortion promotes a culture in which human life is disposable’, ‘Abortion eliminates the potential of societal contributions of a future human being’, and ‘Abortion is murder, the killing of an innocent human being is wrong even if that human being has yet to be born’. As controversial as the subject of abortion can be, it is more than just a debatable topic for interesting group conversations or small talk. It is a Health Issue because this procedure, whether it is done medically or surgically comes with health risks and consequences. I will be discussing some of the different ways in which this health issue
Having an abortion may be a huge stress relief for those women who were victims of rape. In these tragic situations the victims should not be obligated to have a child. Conceiving a child that resulted through this horrific circumstance can be a constant reminder to those victims of the trauma they went through. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, “among adult women an estimated 32, 101 pregnancies result from rape each year". This is a significantly large number, victims of rape are already in great distress, fear and grief and after the trauma they already experienced they should not have the added pressure to be obligated by society to conceive they do not want to. Rape victims have gone through enough mental trauma and that their psychological health should be valued more than the right to life of the fetus. It is a personal decision the victim should be allowed to make without any legal bindings. As quoted by Dr. David C. Reardon, "how can you deny an abortion to a twelve year old girl who is the victim of incest”?
One if every five women get raped, at least 5% of these pregnancies are with the child of their rapist. Numbers on sexual assault are not always accurate, as 63% of sexual violence is not reported to the police, meaning a plethora of cases have not been documented. Most women that are pregnant with their perpetrators children are seriously scarred and were not prepared for a kid. There have been instances where at the time of birth and seeing the child’s face is found to be too reminiscent of the rapist and brings forth the trauma sexual assault leaves on the victim. This is due to the fact that 81% of women report short and long term effects such as PTSD leaving them unable to care for the child adequately or sufficiently. Also this happens a lot of the time in a situation of incest, as 34% of child rapists end of being family members. This not only presents the same sexual abuse factors, but also brings in the possibility of physically and mentally disabled children, making supporting a child financially and emotionally even harder. People who are pregnant with disabled kids will many times want an abortion due to these struggles, so you could imagine if it was a consequence of sexual assault and how much of a toll it would take. Some people cannot provide enough to have a child and this causes a surplus of problems if abortion is not an option. Kids that are kept could end up being given up,
Rape and assault are both traumatizing events that leave physical, mental and emotional scars on the victim. If that forced act and disturbing experiences resulted in pregnancy, it creates more of a challenging process for healing for the woman. Rape would place psychological games on the woman's mind if that victim is forced to carry a product of rape for nine months and having to raise a child that was conceived from a forced traumatic experience. The decision to terminate a pregnancy that results from rape is a very personal decision, but should
Abortion is one of the most socially, politically, and culturally controversial topics of the 21st century, ultimately affecting women of all ages. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, abortion is defined as the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo (Merriam Webster.1). The United States Supreme Court ratified the legalization of abortion in an effort to make the procedure safer; this was done through the Roe v Wade decision of 1973. In the United States more than a thousand abortions take place every day, and although legal, public opinion remains at a standstill as to whether or not abortion is ethical. In the midst of the controversy, two groups emerged. These two groups are referred to as pro-choice and pro-life. Pro-life supporters claim that the life of a baby begins at conception, therefore the act of abortion is equivalent to murder. Pro-choice supporters, on the other hand, believe that a woman has the right to choose what she does with her body. In the end, one must understand the implications of abortion in order to answer the question, is abortion ethically and legally moral?
According to RAINN, on average, there are 321,500 victims of rape and sexual assault, age 12 or older, in the United States. If a woman has been a part of a domestic act of violence she is stuck carrying the child of her attacker. If she gives birth to that child, she will be reminded everyday of the pain and terror she has gone through. “14,000 have abortions following rape or incest.” (MIT).
Some women become pregnant after being raped. A baby resulting from that can be a constant reminder of the traumatic experience. This is especially worse in cases of raped children who become pregnant.
On January 22, 1973, the United States Supreme Court ruled, in a 7-2 decision, on the Roe vs. Wade case legalizing abortion. Since the legalization of abortion in 1973, there have been approximately 60 million abortions within the United States. The Roe vs. Wade ruling sparked a controversial debate that has lasted for over 40 years. People that are pro-choice believe that abortion should be legal and that it is ultimately the mother’s decision. The opposite of pro-choice is pro-life. People that associate with this stance believe that abortion is wrong and any life, whether born or unborn, should be protected. Over the years, there have been several arguments established both for and against abortion. Three strong arguments of pro-life are that life begins at conception, there are harmful mental effects of abortion, and there are flaws to the Roe vs. Wade final ruling.
Rape happens every 2 minutes in the United States of America. 17% of those rape victims become pregnant. This could cause psychological problems for these women either during or after their pregnancy, if they were to carry out their pregnancy. 50% of rape victims were raped by their own family members and incest can lead to birth defects. 32% of women that are raped are between 12 – 17. It’s is very possible for a twelve-year-old female to get pregnant depending on her puberty level. It would not be right to force someone to
Abortion is a highly debated topic that has been highly controversial, especially in recent times. Pro-life, Right To Life, and other anti-abortion groups are fighting to deprive women of a basic medical procedure that should be available to all women. Abortions should be provided and available to all women who wish to get them, and even to those who don’t.
Abortion is a very notorious topic of discussion, whether it should or shouldn't be legal. Could reasons be the fear of overpopulation, the fear of becoming a mother or is the child is not wanted? But why take a child's life for those reasons? The abortion law was passed mid-to-late 1800’s by Roe V. Wade. It is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. Why I believe abortion should be viewed as bad is because how could a woman be all right with the fact to basically be considered a “murder” of a child, but not only that, there are options that they don't even consider.
Abortion in America is a controversial issue in which both sides have valid arguments. But, the arguments can be refuted. Abortion is the ending of pregnancy and expulsion of the embryo or fetus, generally before the embryo or fetus is capable of surviving on its own. Abortion should be illegal for a number of reasons.
Women in all countries have induced abortions. Abortion involves terminating a pregnancy by the removing or expelling of a fetus or embryo from the uterus (First Coast Women Services, 2017). Several countries still have restricted abortion laws that have forced women to use unsafe primitive methods for inducing abortion. Unsafe methods today can be divided into several broad classes: oral and injectable medicines, foreign bodies placed into the uterus through the cervix intrauterine, and trauma to the abdomen (Grimes et al., 2006). Self-inducing abortion is considered as a global health
Society as a whole views certain things that take place in life as either right or wrong. Viewing things as right or wrong is all based upon biased perceptions and past experiences with whatever it may be. Everyone has different opinions when it comes to abortions. Such as, if, when, and how it should take place in someone's life. When asking someone how they feel about an abortion it can be discussed as either right or wrong. Conversation can be lead with "I do not agree with someone having an abortion", or " I do agree with the decision of someone who is wanting to go through the abortion process." When asking some people what they think about the idea of someone having an abortion they respond to the question with a response of “it is their body they can do what they want with it”. The process of having an abortion can be good in some cases, whereas in other situations the privilege is abused and taken advantage of.
Abortion is a life or death matter that has two polar aspects with no grounds of agreement. It refers to terminating a pregnancy before it is ready for birth due to underlying reasons. These reasons typically fall into the categories of financial struggle, rape victims, underage, or unexpecting mothers. The Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v Wade declared that it is a crime for a woman to get an abortion and that it violates her due process rights. A stakeholder known as “Planned Parenthood” is an organization whose main objective is to defend the fight for women’s safe access to legal abortion care. While there are doctors that refuse to perform abortions, Planned Parenthood ensures and defends woman’s fundamental human right of choosing abortion. “Planned Parenthood” desires to remind women everywhere that a woman can never be equal if her basic right of making a decision for herself is denied. They endorsed this notion by creating advertisement of protests through the use of rhetorical appeals such as ethos, pathos, logos, and kairos, where they are able to show people their on going fight against anti-choice politicians and activists.
