The year is 2012. In the movie Back to the Future II, two years from now, in 2016, Marty McFly travels from the past to save his family’s future. The future is almost upon us, and yet it would seem that our education system has changed little since Back to the Future hit theaters in 1985. “We still have same teachers, in the same parts, in the same schools, with the same level of knowledge, with the same equipment’s, and much the same standard of parental support” (David). Ironically, we have been steadily implementing policy after policy, increasing standards and accountability, promoting oversight and rule… the list goes on, and yet our progress seems minimal, our educators complain of underfunded classrooms, and our legislators complain of underperforming schools. The question of “how to improve our education system” is not getting satisfactorily answered because our system is not broken, merely underdeveloped. The truth is that America has made paces in improving its education technique or system; the problem that remains is for us to entrust our educators with the greater pliability and autonomy that they need to excel.

First, the author gives some advices to parents that how to choose a right preschool for their children. Second, the author focuses on what the children could learn at preschool. In the article, Kathleen McCartney states that “from preschool, the children start to know the numbers, letters, and shapes, etc. And more important, they learn how to socialize with other children, how to share and contribute to circle time” (Kanter, 2007, para. 3). Social communication is one of the most important components for humans, and it starts from children. The author uses this quotation to make her argument stronger because Kathleen McCartney is Parents advisor, professor of Education, and president of Smith College (Kanter, 2007), but the author does not show the opposite side in this article. Beggining ones education young, prepares one for the future. Early education has been proven to be beneficial in many aspects throughout life. Children may dread the idea of starting early but in the long run starting early can make a significant difference. Also some may even be ahead of his/her peers in the following years. Early childhood education should be a requirement due to the ability it has to help gain early skills, necessary positive behaviors, and increased brain development.

Laura and John Arnold donated $10 million of their $2.8 billion fortune to help reopen seven Head Start programs in six US states. Head Start is a program run by the US Department of Health and Human services that helps over 7000 extremely poor children transition from kindergarten to elementary school. The program was forced to close down after the government, which was in financial trouble, failed to provide a federal grant. The couple believes that is it unfair for children form poor communities to struggle because of the government's decisions. Many poor parents are unable to pay for daycare. If Head Start shuts down, they will have to take time off of work to care for their children. Sally Aman, Head Start's head spokeswoman, states that

Early childhood education has many benefits and there is the potential for many significant outcomes if universal preschools were put into place. Some feel that children who start kindergarten without previously attended preschool sometimes lack certain skills such as social and communication skills and an inability to follow routines. There were also studies done that found attending preschool could help to close the achievement gap in the grade school years. A child’s first few years of life are most important, and they absorb the most during those years. By providing universal preschool, all children would be benefiting, especially those who are in at-risk families or part of the lower class. As a society, we have a responsibility to help the children in our communities and provide them with the education they need in order to help them succeed in life.

Children should not be required to go to preschool because they do not learn anything they will not learn later. They also will not remember learning anything from preschool, and they need as much time as they can get at home, learning from their parents. In preschool, children learn the colors and how to speak some words, but not an expanded vocabulary, so they should just wait until k-12 to learn these things. This means that since they will just relearn it, they should not go away to preschool. In preschool, children don’t pay attention too often, and their brains are not yet developed for memory, so they should just not go, because it would waste their time learning from books instead of experience, and the teachers time by having to teach

All school districts in the United States should provide free pre-kindergarten classes to all children. To begin with, children need structure in their environment to succeed. If a kid goes to kindergarten with no prior experience of a structured environment or routine, will he be successful? No. A child would be lost having never been exposed to the routine of pre-school. Many Americans show patriotism and deem American as the greatest country, but are the facts in America’s favor? American has always been known worldwide as a superpower, however is American that glorious in every category? We are known for our many achievements throughout history, but through the 241 years we have been a country not once were we praised for our education system. America has struggled in the past because many students dropped out to work and help provide for their family, and the lack of urgency to learn. However, our education is still a major problem, and today we have no excuse. American students struggle and are average or below average in many tests compared to other countries. The education system in America is doing more harm than good and is putting America and our posterity at risk.

Not only does early education bring the benefit of interaction, it also lets the child feel loved and have trust in others. If a child is encountered with early programs then they are able to meet the needs of their child stage life. If these needs are not properly met, then they may become less successful in their performance in an educational environment.

Early childhood education is one of the most important policy topics out there. Research has proven that the early years in childhood is a critical period for opportunity to develop a child’s full potential; as well as form academic, social, and cognitive skills that determine not only success in school but also their entire life (The White House). The right to a free, public education is guaranteed to all children in the United States. Early education is voluntary, and therefore some children are not given the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Education reform is a topic that every student, parent and teacher should be interested in because it effects everyone in the community. Many different approaches to education reform have been tried, and even though they seem to work for the time being, there are always more improvements that need to be made. One of the best ideas that has been discussed in the most recent years is getting the parents and students more involved in the actual reform process. Many school administrators see a problem with involving students, even though they are the ones most affected by the changes within schools. Student’s opinions should be taken into consideration because they are the ones who see what happens inside the school and within the classroom, and are the most affected by it. Involving parents and students in the reform of their schools will improve the quality of education, improve parent and teacher relationships and reduce parent and student complaints.
